Dear Mr. Cendon:
First may I thank you for your letter of inquiry regarding
possible participation in the Ninen-for Governor campaign.
Mr. Nixon appreciated your writing and your fine expression
of interest and support. Since campaign staffing falls under

my effice, he asked me to review your letter and resume.
Although our staff is at full compliment, 1 am referring your
letter to our Northern California office so that they will
be acquainted with your background and availability this

summer or fall. It would be my suggestion that when you de
return to California, you contact the Ninon-fer-Geverner
office at 525 Market Street, San Francisco, DOuglas 2-5576,
and discuss your current situation with either Mr. William
Spencer or Miss Joan Dewey.
We do appreciate your writing us, and of course are hoping
that if a staff position is not open, we can count on whatever
time and help you may be free to offer use in other areas.
Mind regards and good wishes.

Dear Loie -
Sorry to have to trouble you with this -- but
thought McCaffrey should have an answer. As you said, this
certainly has no priority -- but maybe Bob's reply will
keep him at peace with the world generally - and with our
office particularly. Many, many thanks.

Dear Mr. Copeland:
This letter will acknowledge your generous offer of the use
of the 1962 Chrysler New Yerker for Mr. Nixen during his
Southern California campaigning.
The specific arrangements outlined in your letter of March 30th
will of course be most satisfactory.
The persons authorised to pick up this automobile will be

pick up the car.
At this point I am not able to give you much of a schedule on
the use of the car other than the possibility of April 12th and 13th.
I am sure is will not be needed from April 14th through the 22nd.
We will try to get a tentative schedule down to you as seen as
possible.

Dear Alan:
Thanks very much for your April 2nd letter regarding schedule
possibilities. Taking the items you raised in order:
1)
We have been trying to work out a time for the
x\ ** date 0
luncheon at the Merchandise Mart, but 1 think you will
agree with me that since we have been unable to clear
a date up to now, it would be much wiser to put this
off until the general campaign, when we can gain more
direct advantage from a meeting with such a large group
- Schedule (HRH file)
of influential Democrats. Our strategy from this point

through June 5th must obviously be to shift our concen-
tration substantially to reaching and enthusing large
numbers of registered Republicans. This doesn't mean
we ignore the general public, but we do shift our concen-
tration.
2)
Obviously the meeting with Henry Budde would be
extremely beneficial and 1 am delighted to know there is
a possibility of setting this up. Wednesday is so jammed
new that 1 don't see anyway of deing it then, although you
might discuss this with Helen Gale and through her, with
Nick Ruwe. My suggestion, however, would be to try
to work this in on April 26th when Dick is up there for a
very quick trip to speak to the Irrigation District group
at noon. We can't do much else that day, but the Budde
meeting might be possible.

Delan sent us some material which 1 passed along to this

is a very hot potential Lease which would have good mass veter
appeal. He points out that Senator Reagan was fed up on the whole
aarestics business, which is of course closely related to this, and
that Reagan started an investigation last fall, but was stopped se

would uncover some things they didn't want uncovered. This angle

RN appearance, California Hereford Association, Fresno, May 18th.
ec: Nick Rawe
Booth Turner
I had a telephone call Friday from Dan Thoraton, former Governer
of Colorade, who is very active in the National Hereford Association
affairs, and the one who secured RN for the May 18th date in Fresne.
Thoraton can be reached in Palm Springs at 328-1610 or 328-2161. - If
he is not in Palm Springs, be can be reached in Denver at Sunset 9-2507.
Theraton suggests that we get in touch with James G. Sanders, General
Chairman for the meeting in Fresne, to get whatever additional back-
ground we might want for RN's remarks. Sanders can be reached at
The Lacky Hereford Ranch, Gilrey, telephone VI 2-4022. He is a
Republican, and should be very helpful.
Theraton says there will be 1500 at the Banquet, representing 7 or 8
western states, but 90% Californians. It will be evenly divided between
Republicans and Democrats, but the Democrats present will be strongly
conservative. The sudience will be composed of commercial and
regular cattle people -- farmers, feeders, feed raisers, representatives
of packing, processing, wholesaling, retailing and agricultural colleges.
General subject of the overall conference is the scientific side of
cattle raising. The group desires a non-political speech, but it could
have political overtomes.
Thoraton says the cattle people have not accepted government subsidy.
They work on their own in cooperation with the government and the schools.
Me feels this industry is an example of free enterprise at its very best -
and that this should be stressed in RN's remarks.

Dear Ralph:
As 1 am sure you know, Dick is addressing the California Hereford
Association in Fresno on May 18th.
I had a conversation with Dan Thoraton, former Governer of
Colorado, regarding this meeting. He recommends that we get
in touch with James G. Sanders in Gilroy to suggest that be head
up a "Stockmen for Nixom" group. This, it seems to me, could
come under the overall blanket of "Farmers for Nixon", but perhaps
as a somewhat separate operation.
I don't know whether you know Sanders -- 1 do not. Thoruton tells
me he is a highly successful stockman, both in cattle and sheep.
He is a member of the Boards of Directors of all the important stock
associations, and is considered the outstanding Hereford judge in
the world. He is an ardent Republican from Nebraska and,
according to Thoraton, strongly pre-Nixon. He is General Chairman
of the Fresno meeting, only 36 years old and apparently quite dynamic.
He is, I believe, General Manager of Eugene Selvage's agricultural
interests. Selvage, as you know, is head of Lucky Lager.
Sanders can be reached at The Lucky Hereford Ranch, Gilrey,
telephone - VI 2-4022. De you want to contact him regarding the
possibility of setting up a "Steckmen for Mixom" unit, or would you
suggest some other approach?
Best regards.

Your idea of the letter to the newly
naturalized citizens is a darned good one. We will
work up a draft and try to get this one under way.
Thanks much.

Dear Al:
We will keep the Hungarian Freedom
date on the calendar for consideration
in post-primary scheduling. Let us
have more details as they develop, and
if this could be worked into the
itinerary, I agree with you it would
be an excellent thing to do.
On the Steuben Society membership,
I - passing this along to Dick's office
for handling.
Many thanks, and best regards.
