We X tried unsuccessfully to reach you at home the other File: evening, and yesterday the telethon meeting kept me away from the office, so I missed your call in the afternoon. date Your decision to direct your available funds toward the immediate get-out-the-vote effort (Moier) M makes good sense to me. I was also interested in the report you passed along about the people who had called your headquarters following the telecast Wednesday night. Similar reports are coming in from other areas, and the concensus of opinion now is that it backfired in our favor. Please let us know if you get anything further along this line. Campaign Corres - Nixon Chairmen Many thanks for your help. Keep things rolling, and let us know if we can be helpful. Best regards. WIN WITH NIXON! H. R. Haldeman Mr. Merbert Meier 1212 Oakwood Drive Arcadia, California May 25, 1962 Dear George: Sorry to miss your call yesterday afternoon. A telethon meeting had me tied up all day - which I'm afraid will be routine for the next few days. On the matter we talked about recently and which you mentioned again yesterday in conversation with my office, as you know the campaign strategy is directed toward November. Nothing would be used X File along this line. However, as you have pointed out, much can be accomplished by word of mouth, and I under- stand you are doing just this and converting a few misguided souls. Keep up the good work. date I was also interested in your report of the reaction to the Shell telecast Wednesday night. M (Milias) We haven't had the same comparison your Rotary friend cited, but generally it seems to have backfired in our favor. Let me know if you hear anything more on this. Thanks for keeping us posted, George. WIN WITH NIXON! H. R. File: We certainly appreciate your desire to help in the Nixon-for-Governor campaign. I would suggest you get in touch with us upon your arrival in California. Since you only plan to be here for the month of August, it would be difficult for an assignment x x to be made, as such, but I can assure you we would be most grateful to know you were available. your interest and support are deeply appreciated. date M Your comments on our candidate and Kindest regards. WIN WITH NIXON: Personnel - Out-of-State TD's H. R. Haldeman Mr. George Whelpley 2807 N. George Mason Drive Arlington, Virginia May 24, 1962 Dear Tom: I am sorry you weren't able to make the Policy Committee meeting Wednesday. Ray told me of your telephone call and we certainly appreciate your constructive criticism. Ray mentioned you had reports on a number of letters sent in which had not received answers. I wonder if you could give me specifics on these so I can track them down? As you know, we are X working very hard to be sure this situation never I arises, but it is very difficult to correct it without knowledge of each individual case. Best regards. date File: K) K)Knudsen Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman Mr. Th. R. Knudsen 1974 Santee Street Los Angeles 11, California Herb Kalmbach 5-24-62 Bob Haldeman Paul Brennan asked about employment this summer and possibly into the fall. I'm afraid we will have to tell him we don't see available funds for this purpose at this time, and he had better go ahead and make plans elsewhere. Obviously we are very sorry not to be able to have him with us, but at the moment we see no way to do it. date X I File: Personnel - TD's in-state Herb Kalmbach 5-24-62 Bob Haldeman Bill Spencer called with the suggestion that we prepare small cards saying "Remember to vote on June 5th" X to be distributed to retail stores -- supermarkets, drug stores etc. date Perhaps Minckler or someone could find an angel to pay $100 to $200 for printing and line up a few File: Campaign Ideas corporate executives to see that they are distributed through their chains. May 24, 1962 Dear Don: Thanks for your report on the Alameda County situation. I checked into Lew Sherman's contacts with us and found that he had telephoned our Schedule office. Mr. Ports tried to return the call but was un- successful in reaching him. Sherman called again and missed Ports. Instead of trying to reach him by telephone, Dick Ports then wrote him and copy of his letter is attached. It is also my understanding this interchange occurred over a period of a week. X - This afternoon, while talking with Lew Sherman on another matter, my office mentioned this reported delay in calls. He was not at all concerned, said the situation had been worked out satisfactorily and date File: Mulford he was in no way critical. As I am sure you know, the State Central Committee's plans for the unity fund-raising events had to be postponed because there was not sufficient time to organize the program properly. We had been in touch with our County Chairman, Bob McKeen, and of course it was hoped this coordinated effort would produce real results. Nowever, it was the State Committee's decision to postpone the program. I would certainly suggest to Lew Sherman that if he has any difficulty in the future reaching the Schedule office, be should asked to be connected with me. We will then have a record of the call and can follow through. Hon. Don Mulford May 24, 1962 Incidentally, Dick Ports is one of our most capable volunteers on loan to us for this Scheduling assignment. He is doing a fine job in what I an sure you recognize as being one of the most difficult spots of any campaign. As his letter to Law Sherman states, he had to be out of town for a few days this week, but for all practical purposes, he is working at a full-time level. Please continue to keep me posted on matters like this. They should and must be straightened out, and in this case, I think the needful has been done. Best regards. WIN WITH MIXON! H. R. Haldeman Miss Alice Oge 1312 North Orange Drive Hollywood 28, California Encl Water Speech date May 31, 1962 Dear Al: Many thanks for your letter of May 29th regarding Mr. and Mrs. Kading. If they had reference to your initial correspendence, I trust they under- stand that it did not reach this office, which was certainly regrettable in the circumstances. We have not, as yet, found any communication from the Kadings. Novever, I am very glad you are in touch with this particular situation." If you can learn anything further, by all means let us have the details. The Chico organization report is one we will again check into. We know it had been week, but it was our definite understanding that more recently it had gotten off the ground and Butte County was on its way. As for Mrs. Mamburger's letter in the Chico Enterprise Record, we're back again with that rife rumer, which in many cases is just that. As I - sure you know, this complaint - like many others attacking the candidate and his organization - are well conceived and carried out. Repetition resps its rewards, or conversely, its damages. I think Mrs. Mamburger's registered public complaint is a case in point, and if this is her No. 1 reason for changing her political philosophy, it's a pity. At this point, I don't believe that anything constructive could be gained by my writing her, since 2 May 31, 1962 she has obviously decided to support Jee Shell. I trust we can contact her after the primary and get her help in defeating Brown in November. I certainly do not mean to minimise the importance of any communication being answered promptly and fully. There have been many instances where delays or oversights have occurred. When we are dealing with thousands of pieces of mail each day, this is understandable, but nonetheless regrettable. In all cases reported, every effort is made to get specifics so that an explanation can be sent. From personal contact, I know this is always accomplished. This particular charge regarding the Howard Hughes loan was thoroughly aired in the 1960 campaign and discredited at that time. An indication of the political nature of the attack is underscored by the fact that while prior to the election a Congressional inquiry was mentioned, no move of any kind was ever Derogatory Questions - Corres. re: undertaken by the Committee or any other agency following the election. Nothing more was heard of this matter until the present gubernatorial campaign. The present implication that any further airing will be held up until after the primary is in reference to a pending law suit in which depositions were to be taken from a number of witnesses, including Dick Nixon. At the time this suit was widely publicised several months ago, Nixon indicated his willingness to testify and his desire to do so in open hearing, rather than in secret, as had been suggested by one of the lawyers in the case. Mr. J. D. Fair 2 May 21, 1962 I can assure you there is no skeleton, and agree with you "it is a strange thing that the man who is perhaps the most dedicated and brilliant person in politics today should be so subject to every little thing he does." I am sure you realize, however, that any man who has taken the forthright stands and positive actions that Richard Nixon has taken throughout his career, especially in the field of Anti-Communism, is liable to such attacks and baseless smears. Haldeman Ruth Watson 5-15-62 Bob Haldeman Dear Ruth: I have your letter of May 11th about the Alameda County fund-raising plans. The State Central Committee is considering putting on a series of unity fund-raising dinners or other fund-raising activities in the major cities throughout the state. This is planned shortly after the primary. As soon as this is definite, then it would be fine if the Nixon Committee and the County Central Committee could get together and plan a real show at the Oakland Auditorium. At the moment, however, it would appear we will have to await developments on the State Committee's plans. May 21, 1962 Dear Bob: As I an sure you know by now from the State Central Committee, the plans for a series of unity fund-raising activities in the major cities throughout the state shortly after the primary have been dropped. This was necessarily the decision due to the inability to put N M M together a suitable organization and get the program under way soon enough to make it successful. I had told George Murphy of your interest in this McK (McKeen) RN memo file activity and imagine he has been in touch with you.
