Attached is a file re: Mr. Talik
Volmensky who, as you will note, has been referred
to us by Adela Rogers St. Johns.
This is one that definitely should
be followed up. I have written him, but rather
than delay trying to meet him on one of my trips to
San Francisco, would you please get in touch with
him, determine if and where he can be used, be sure
to indicate our interest in him - and then let me
have a report. I want to go back to Mrs. St. Johns
with the results of the contact.
July 14, 1962
Dear Mr. Taylor:
Thanks very much for your letter
of July 13th.
We are of course delighted to learn
of your interest in the Nixon-for-Governor
campaign organization and your inquiry regarding
a paid staff position.
I am passing your letter along to
Mr. Herb Kalmbach, the Southern California Campaign
Manager, so that he will be acquainted with your
background. I feel sure that if an opportunity
develops in which he feels you might have an interest,
he will get in touch with you immediately.
Thank you again for your letter
and for the support it evidences.
With kind regards and good wishes.
Sincerely,
H. R. Haldeman

Dear Mr. White:
Thank you for your letter of July 12th inquiring
about the possibility of a position on our staff
during the campaign period.
Your interest is appreciated, and I only wish I could
indicate there might be an opening where your back-
ground could be used. We are, however, not contemplating
X
any changes in or expansion of our paid staff.
So that he will be acquainted with your availability,
background and location, I am sending a copy of your
letter to Mr. William Spencer, Northern California
Campaign Manager.

Should you have any free time to devote to the campaign's
volunteer organization, I can assure you such service
is needed and would be gratefully received. In this
connection, you might want to contact Assemblymn
Bill Bagley who is the Nixon-for-Governor Chairman for
Marin County. His office is located in the Albert
Building in San Rafael. Copy of your letter is also going
to him.
We do appreciate your writing us and regret we cannot
take advantage of your offer insofar as the paid staff
is concerned. Thank you for your interest, and very
best wishes.

Dear Tom:
The bound file "Long Range
Plan for the Preservation of Personal
Freedom and a Free Economy" has just
reached me,
I have not had an opportunity
to do more than scan it, but it looks
interesting. What is the background on
this? May I keep it, or did you intend
for it to be returned to your office?
Best regards.
Sincerely,

Dear Mel:
Thanks very such
for your note of July 10th and
the enclosed Newsweek item on the
decision which may be facing
Brown in the Duncan case.
I agree with you -
and we will be most interested
in what develops.
Best regards.

Dear Bob:
Your letter of July 2nd to Dick Nixon
was received by his office while he was in Denmark
and referred to me for reply.
I was delighted to learn you are running
for State Senate and you certainly have my best
wishes.
As I am sure you will understand, however,
there has had to be a firm policy established of
no involvement in out-of-state campaigns, which of
course precludes Dick writing the letter you suggest.
As a matter of fact, there has been no involvement
within the state insofar as other campaigns have been
concerned. This seems to be the only fair and just
method of handling the many requests which he
receives for endorsements.
I know Dick will appreciate your letter and
let me know how things are going.
Kindest regards.
Sincerely,

Dear AB:
The mailing of the "Inside Politics" issue is
great, and I certainly agree this sert of thing will
help tremendously.
Your name will be put on our mailing list to
receive clippings from out here. You know without my
saying your offer to reproduce and circulate material
along this line will mean a great deal.
I think the enclosed copy of an article which
appeared in the Oakland Tribune recently will be of
interest to you. It not only points up the heavy
Democratic write-in for Republicans, but at the same time
the fact that Brown's vote count was far less than the
votes east for lesser effices. Thousands of Democrats
who went to the pells withheld voting for Brown, although
they did vote for Lt. Governor and the other offices.

Dear Mr. McJunkins:
Dick Nixon has passed along to me your letter of July 2nd.
We are pleased and grateful to learn of your interest in
the campaign, and your very generous offer to help out in
the months ahead on a full-time volunteer basis.
The move to California is a substantial one for you to
make, I am sure. Because of the many considerations in-
volved, I am more prompted to look at the situation from
your own point of view rather than from ours. My first
thought would be whether or not we would have an appro-
priate assignment available to make your relocation for
this relatively short period worthwhile.
It would be extremely helpful if you could let us know a
little more of your own background, your recent activities
and an expression as to whether or not there is a specific
area of the campaign organization work in which you would have
special interest or knowledge. We would appreciate very
much receiving information in whatever form you might have
it readily available.
Thank you again for your thoughtful letter. I can assure
you it is the kind Dick Nixon likes to receive, and we
like to follow-up.
With kind regards.

Sorry to be so long acknowledging
your check of June 28th.
As a matter of fact, I took the family
to Laguna for about 10 days. This is my first
day back in the office, and it's been a red letter
one, as I'm sure you will agree after reading the
papers. Things are being righted, however. It's

As you know, Dick has expressed his views on this

answer and help Mr. Soher? At first blush, this seems
the quickest way to provide him with the information
he is seeking for reference.

Dear Mr. Huston:
Your letter of August 21st to Dick Nixon was received during
his absence. His office has asked me to acknowledge your
letter to avoid a delayed answer to your question.
To comply with your request poses somewhat of a problem. I
can assure you that Dick would be happy to do anything within
the bounds of appropriate action on his part to be helpful
to you. However, in this particular instance, and in view of
the fact he is a gubernatorial candidate, he could not, because
of established policy, address the type letter you have
suggested to the colleges you are presently negotiating
with for a position.
It would seem to me you might well have your Texas organization
people with whom you worked directly write such letters in
your behalf, although of course I recognize your reason for
desiring a letter from Dick to the local people. However, I
feel sure you will understand the circumstances and the
policy involved.
Please know we are grateful for your support in the past and
your expressions of interest in and support of the campaign
effort now under way. If and when you do arrive in California,
I hope you will give us a call.
Kind regards and best wishes.

I understand that at the Santa Ana affair Saturday there
were Nixonettes wandering around handing out bumper strips,
but there was no one putting them on cars. I don't
understand why we seem unable to cope with this .
Obviously at this point there should be bumper strip teams
actually putting them on cars. Let's make a flat rule from
here out that no bumper strips will be handed out at any
meeting, but rather have all meetings adequately staffed
by young people who have been specifically instructed they
are not just to distribute them, but are actually to place them
on the cars.

I understand through my mother, who had a
conversation with Earl Jorgensen at dinner the other
evening, that he is now ready to back RN.
He will, of course, make a substantial financial
contribution, but according to mother, should receive
some special recognition. I think this is one you
should handle personally, or have someone of comparable
stature make the contact since, as you know,
Jorgensen was pretty much opposed to us until just
recently.
Incidentally, the change of heart came about as the
result of one of RN's receptions which he attended.
