Tuesday, December 11, 2007 Page 8 of 8 Bill Spencer 7-16-62 Bob Haldeman Attached is a file re: Mr. Talik Volmensky who, as you will note, has been referred to us by Adela Rogers St. Johns. This is one that definitely should be followed up. I have written him, but rather than delay trying to meet him on one of my trips to San Francisco, would you please get in touch with him, determine if and where he can be used, be sure to indicate our interest in him - and then let me have a report. I want to go back to Mrs. St. Johns with the results of the contact. July 14, 1962 Dear Mr. Taylor: Thanks very much for your letter of July 13th. We are of course delighted to learn of your interest in the Nixon-for-Governor campaign organization and your inquiry regarding a paid staff position. I am passing your letter along to Mr. Herb Kalmbach, the Southern California Campaign Manager, so that he will be acquainted with your background. I feel sure that if an opportunity develops in which he feels you might have an interest, he will get in touch with you immediately. Thank you again for your letter and for the support it evidences. With kind regards and good wishes. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman Mr. Fenton Taylor, Jr. 2935 Thorndike Road Pasadena, California July 14, 1962 Dear Mr. White: Thank you for your letter of July 12th inquiring about the possibility of a position on our staff during the campaign period. Your interest is appreciated, and I only wish I could indicate there might be an opening where your back- ground could be used. We are, however, not contemplating X any changes in or expansion of our paid staff. So that he will be acquainted with your availability, background and location, I am sending a copy of your letter to Mr. William Spencer, Northern California Campaign Manager. date File: Offers Bill Bagley CC: Bill Spencer Should you have any free time to devote to the campaign's volunteer organization, I can assure you such service is needed and would be gratefully received. In this connection, you might want to contact Assemblymn Bill Bagley who is the Nixon-for-Governor Chairman for Marin County. His office is located in the Albert Building in San Rafael. Copy of your letter is also going to him. We do appreciate your writing us and regret we cannot take advantage of your offer insofar as the paid staff is concerned. Thank you for your interest, and very best wishes. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman Mr. William W. White, Jr. 135 Harvard Avenue Mill Valley, California July 13, 1962 Dear Tom: The bound file "Long Range Plan for the Preservation of Personal Freedom and a Free Economy" has just reached me, I have not had an opportunity to do more than scan it, but it looks interesting. What is the background on this? May I keep it, or did you intend for it to be returned to your office? Best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman Mr. Thomas P. Pike 2600 South Eastland Avenue Los Angeles, California July 13, 1962 Dear Mel: Thanks very such for your note of July 10th and the enclosed Newsweek item on the decision which may be facing Brown in the Duncan case. I agree with you - and we will be most interested in what develops. Best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman Mr. Melville E. Willson Melville E. Willson Company P.O. Box 1168 Fresno 15, California July 13, 1962 Dear Bob: Your letter of July 2nd to Dick Nixon was received by his office while he was in Denmark and referred to me for reply. I was delighted to learn you are running for State Senate and you certainly have my best wishes. As I am sure you will understand, however, there has had to be a firm policy established of no involvement in out-of-state campaigns, which of course precludes Dick writing the letter you suggest. As a matter of fact, there has been no involvement within the state insofar as other campaigns have been concerned. This seems to be the only fair and just method of handling the many requests which he receives for endorsements. I know Dick will appreciate your letter and let me know how things are going. Kindest regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman Mr. Robert Ogden 1230 East 20th Avenue Spokane 35, Washington J. R. July 13, 1962 Dear Emily: Thanks very much for the San Francisco statistics. These are interesting and helpful. Our research people are working up a very complete analysis of the total primary vote - from every angle. I am sending your letter along to them for their information. It was good to see you down here. Keep up the good work, and WIN WITH NIXON: H. R. Haldeman Miss Emily G. Jackson which you are crediting to the Nixon Campaign in accordance with her request. Our Treasurer is being advised of this today, and appropriate acknowledgment will go forward to the contributor. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman Mr. K. O. Baker Finance Director United Republican Finance Committee 914 South Olive Street Los Angeles 15, California July 12, 1962 Dear AB: The mailing of the "Inside Politics" issue is great, and I certainly agree this sert of thing will help tremendously. Your name will be put on our mailing list to receive clippings from out here. You know without my saying your offer to reproduce and circulate material along this line will mean a great deal. I think the enclosed copy of an article which appeared in the Oakland Tribune recently will be of interest to you. It not only points up the heavy Democratic write-in for Republicans, but at the same time the fact that Brown's vote count was far less than the votes east for lesser effices. Thousands of Democrats who went to the pells withheld voting for Brown, although they did vote for Lt. Governor and the other offices. cc: A1 Moscow (with file) Many thanks again, AB, and best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman Mr. AB Hermann Republican National Committee 1625 Eye Street, N.W. Washington, D. C. July 12, 1962 Dear Mr. McJunkins: Dick Nixon has passed along to me your letter of July 2nd. We are pleased and grateful to learn of your interest in the campaign, and your very generous offer to help out in the months ahead on a full-time volunteer basis. The move to California is a substantial one for you to make, I am sure. Because of the many considerations in- volved, I am more prompted to look at the situation from your own point of view rather than from ours. My first thought would be whether or not we would have an appro- priate assignment available to make your relocation for this relatively short period worthwhile. It would be extremely helpful if you could let us know a little more of your own background, your recent activities and an expression as to whether or not there is a specific area of the campaign organization work in which you would have special interest or knowledge. We would appreciate very much receiving information in whatever form you might have it readily available. Thank you again for your thoughtful letter. I can assure you it is the kind Dick Nixon likes to receive, and we like to follow-up. With kind regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman Mr. Orren R. McJunkins 1920 South Ocean Drive Fort Lauderdale, Florida July 11, 1962 Dear Uncle A1: Sorry to be so long acknowledging your check of June 28th. As a matter of fact, I took the family to Laguna for about 10 days. This is my first day back in the office, and it's been a red letter one, as I'm sure you will agree after reading the papers. Things are being righted, however. It's all part of the game. In any event, I'm winding up the day pleasantly -- thanking you for your help. It's really appreciated. Hope to see you soon. July 10, 1962 Dear Art: Sorry my absence has delayed acknowledging your letter of July 3rd. This refers to Mr. Soher's request for Dick's comments on fiscal responsibility. As you know, Dick has expressed his views on this issue in many of his speeches. Rather than try to come up now with a composite of his various statements, is there a possibility the enclosed remarks would answer and help Mr. Soher? At first blush, this seems the quickest way to provide him with the information he is seeking for reference. However, if you still feel something more is in order, please let me know and we'll try to do the needful. Kindest regards and best wishes. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman Mr. Arthur J. Dan Waters 7-10-62 Bob Haldeman Sandy Quinn's memo of 7/2 re: Employment Agencies for RN Herb Kalmbach I would suggest you get in touch with Wes Hooper and sound him out on this idea. He may or may not be the one to organize the area, but in any event, it should be covered. I would play down any idea of RN meeting with the leaders on a statewide or regional basis - but see what can be done about pulling the group together and getting them started. Chad McClellan 7-10-62 Bob Haldeman Operation of Unemployment Insurance Administration Dear Chad: Thanks very much for your memo of July 9th with attached file. Interestingly enough, I also have a letter from a Mr. John W. Any additional material you are able to pull in would be appreciated. Fair 779 Joaquin Avenue Redding, California Dear Mr. Fair: Thank you for your letter of June 29 wherein you set forth your comments relative to a retarded children program and the state's ineffective handling of this matter to date. Your letter has been routed to our research de- partment. Also, we wish to thank you for your suggestion that we should have someone in attendance at the meeting of the Board of the Aid to Retarded Children groups in Auburn on August 2, 3, and 4. Thank you again for your interest. Very truly yours, Herbert W. Kalmbach Southern California Campaign Manager July 5, 1962 Miss Inger Nordstoy 357 South Curson Avenue Los Angeles 36, California Dear Miss Nordstoy: On behalf of Dick Nixon, may I express our appreciation for your recent letter of congratulations and for your kind expression of interest. Mayor Christopher's comments reflect our feeling and attitude regarding your suggestions and observations as to ways in which campaign procedures may be made more efficient. You may be assured that we are endeavoring in this campaign to manage our many programs in such a way as to avoid un- necessary confusion and duplication of effort. Your interest in good government and in Dick Nixon's candidacy are graphically evidenced by your good letter. Sincerely yours, Herbert W. Kalmbach Executive Director August 31, 1962 Dear Mr. Anderson: Thanks very much for your letter of August 28th. The list of names of contributors to the Nixon campaign through the Hollywood-Nixon Committee has been forwarded to our Finance Office for proper handling. I think you should check with him - but in an extremely tactful way (he donated the Headquarters) - try to ascertain how much money has come in and what is being done with it. I have acknowledged his letter, saying the list was being forwarded to our Finance Office for proper handling. August 31, 1962 Dear Mr. Huston: Your letter of August 21st to Dick Nixon was received during his absence. His office has asked me to acknowledge your letter to avoid a delayed answer to your question. To comply with your request poses somewhat of a problem. I can assure you that Dick would be happy to do anything within the bounds of appropriate action on his part to be helpful to you. However, in this particular instance, and in view of the fact he is a gubernatorial candidate, he could not, because of established policy, address the type letter you have suggested to the colleges you are presently negotiating with for a position. It would seem to me you might well have your Texas organization people with whom you worked directly write such letters in your behalf, although of course I recognize your reason for desiring a letter from Dick to the local people. However, I feel sure you will understand the circumstances and the policy involved. Please know we are grateful for your support in the past and your expressions of interest in and support of the campaign effort now under way. If and when you do arrive in California, I hope you will give us a call. Kind regards and best wishes. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman Mr. Robert H. Huston Lone Star Steel Company P.O. Box 12226 Dallas 25, Texas John Kalmbach 8-31-62 Bob Haldeman cc: Herb Kalmbach I understand that at the Santa Ana affair Saturday there were Nixonettes wandering around handing out bumper strips, but there was no one putting them on cars. I don't understand why we seem unable to cope with this . Obviously at this point there should be bumper strip teams actually putting them on cars. Let's make a flat rule from here out that no bumper strips will be handed out at any meeting, but rather have all meetings adequately staffed by young people who have been specifically instructed they are not just to distribute them, but are actually to place them on the cars. Maurice Stans 8-31-62 Beb Haldeman I understand through my mother, who had a conversation with Earl Jorgensen at dinner the other evening, that he is now ready to back RN. He will, of course, make a substantial financial contribution, but according to mother, should receive some special recognition. I think this is one you should handle personally, or have someone of comparable stature make the contact since, as you know, Jorgensen was pretty much opposed to us until just recently. Incidentally, the change of heart came about as the result of one of RN's receptions which he attended. August 30, 1962 Dear Phil: Thanks so very much for your letter. The suggested approach to our taxing problems is certainly worthy of detailed and careful study. I have found it mest interesting and am today passing it along to our Research Staff with the request that they examine the data you have submitted and express an opinion. I do want to assure you the Dickson portfolio will be handled with the greatest care, and we will make certain the material is returned to you in good order. As for the assistance which you and your brother are so generously contemplating, whatever is done in this connection will be received most gratefully. Thank you again for your fine interest and support. It was good to see you the other evening at the Jonathan Club and have a chance for a visit. With kind regards. WIN WITH NIXON! H. R. Haldeman Mr. M. Philip Davis 9944 Santa Monica Boulevard Beverly Hills, California Dave Hunter 8-30-62 Bob Haldeman I have no comment on the proposal involved in the attached tax file provided by Phil Davis. However, will you let me have your comments after you have had a chance to look it over? The so-called Dickson Portfolio is of priceless historical value, so will you please handle it carefully and make certain it is kept intact. It must be returned to Mr. Davis ultimately. Jim Halley 8-30-62 Bob Haldeman Ralph W. Chaney, Ph.D, U of c - Berkeley Dear Jim: Will you get in touch with Dr. Chaney and see what he can or would like to do to help out in the campaign? Rather than my writing him an interim letter, I think a direct contact from someone up there is in order. Many thanks. Research Department 8-30-62 Bob Haldeman The attached letter from Lowell McGinnis to Helene Drown contains some suggestions which are passed along for your information.
