If it is possible for me to do so, I will certainly be there. If not, I will make a point of dropping by at the first opportunity. I am also posting our Schedule Committee on your invitation for Dick Nixon to come by at some point later in the campaign. Doubtless you have already written Herb Kalmbach, our Southern California Campaign Manager, but if not, I know he will be most interested in having your report and hearing of your plans for the official opening on August 17th. I was sorry to miss you and Buss Forward the day you came by our Headquarters. We do appreciate all that both of you accomplished in setting up the Reseda location, getting your headquarters staffed and otherwise moving ahead as you have. With kind regards and best wishes. I can understand how some confusion developed regarding your position in the campaign. Apparently it was a misunderstanding all the way around, and I appreciate your full explanation of the circumstances involved. We appreciate your help, Joel, and if anything should develop where we can take advantage of your availability and desire to help out either down here or up north, we will certainly get in touch with you. However, I do not anticipate the staff to be expanded beyond present limits, but do hope we can count on your continued help in whatever area and capacity for which you have the time. Walter Thompson. She attached a note saying she will be expecting the call from your daughter and will make certain everything is done that will be helpful and interesting insofar as the local itinerary is concerned. We are, of course, delighted to arrange anything possible to make their visit here a memorable one. As the letterhead indicates, I have been on leave from J. Walter Thompson since last fall, and of course will not be returning until after Dick Nixon is on his way to Sacramento. This is going to be a close race, but we are confident the November results will prove out our present optimism. Glad to learn of your new connection. Congratulations -- to you -- and to Long, Haymes & Carr. I am also happy to hear the new association is all and more than you hoped it would be. Miss Dray will follow through when your daughter calls, and I know will see that appropriate arrangements are made. Nice to hear from you, Bill, and very best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Don was urging that he be contacted. Nagel was for Shell during the primary, but he will come out 100% for RM and work for us. Apparently a few problems resulted following the primary when some of our people, according to Nagel, were a bit hostile in their activities in the District. It was suggested a letter be sent to every Nixon County Chairman in the District, clarifying the fact that RN is in support of all nominees. It was Mulford's further recommendation that all possible cooperation and support should be given to Magel. If the approach to him is handled properly, he can offer a great deal of help by way of providing full information on the 19 counties in the District. I think this should be carefully followed up and will appreciate your handling it and giving me a report on the situation. July 27, 1962 Dear Phil: I know Bill Spencer has been in touch with you regarding a meeting of the Public Relations group. I certainly feel it is important that this be done, and soon. There are many things we should discuss regarding P.R. aspects of the many phases of plans for the fall effort. We should especially cover your group's thinking on telethons and other uses of television, all candidates' scheduling, campaign materials, overall themes, and most important - approaches to win ever the uncommitted or unfriendly voters. I wonder if it would work out to set up a meeting during the week of August 5th or August 12th? Adela Rogers and others have suggested it be used extensively along the lines Kennedy used his "Profiles of Courage in the '60 campaign. This is a project that needs to be outlined immediately - and implemented. Please let me have your thoughts on how best it can be programmed into the fall campaign. Also, please be sure it is on the agenda for the next P.R. Committee Meeting. Incidentally, it might be a good idea to try to get this group together next week. Monday and Tuesday are clear on my calendar for a luncheon meeting. In lieu of a meeting, I definitely think we should get their opinions. John Kalmbach 7-24-62 Bob Haldeman Democrats for Nixon dow ee: Herb Kalmbach Bill Spencer I have your memo of July 13th. This is at best a rather meager start and there is a great deal more than must be done, and done immediately. First, all of our Nixon County Chairman must be given a specific program for setting up "Democrats for Nixon" organizations in their Counties. This should probably be carried to the community level. Please develop a plan for this. Second, all of our Contact groups should be considered as prime sources for "Demecrats for Nixon" and an immediate check should be made of all signed up now to determine which are registered Democrate and whether we can use their names. This is especially important in the Veterans group, and Weinberg should be put to work immediately listing the Democrats - especially the prominent ones - in his organization. Third, I simply don't believe there has been no more incoming mail from Democrats willing to help than has been received via Lois Gaunt and Rose Woods (attached hereto). This must be checked out further. I cannet emphasize strengly enough the absolute necessity of moving ahoad on this full steam. In addition to all of the above, we must get everybody working on digging up prominent Democrats who will lend their names to our cause. I would like your recommendations on the procedures for doing this to be discussed at a meeting either the end of this week or first part of next. I an sending Bill Spencer a copy of this memo with the request that he also pursue this matter and that he plan to be down here for the meeting, which should be set as quickly as possible at a time when all of us are available. At that time Bill should give us a report on everything that has - 2 - been done to date in the Northern area and his answers to the requests listed above. At the meeting we will evolve basic recommendations for future program and activity which should then be presented to the Northern and Southern Policy Groups and put into effect immediately. date RN 7-24-62 Bob Haldeman Bill Fetridge tells me the man who accompanied his sister to the Los Angeles airport and to whom you were introduced when they were there to meet Marlene Dietrich, is Mr. Jerome Thor, his brother-in-law. Haldeman Mr. Joseph Martin, Jr. 400 Montgomery Street San Francisco, California Research Department 7-24-62 Bob Haldeman date In connection with Traffic and Transportation, Joe Martin suggests that if "slaughter on the freeways" were actively exploited, this would be more effective than merely talking about "improved transportation". He goes on to say, "Rigidly enforced laws have been proved to dramatically reduce accidents and death. This also ties right in with Bob McCarthy and his resignation. I think if properly handled this could become a very popular campaign issue and one which definitely places Brown in an unfavorable light and on the defensive." date July 24, 1962 Dear Bill: Thanks very much for your letter and your prompt answer to my very complicated question. I an passing the information on Mr. Jerome Ther along to Dick Nixon. It would appear the campaign will come and go without the contact he had thought might be helpful. Many thanks, anyway. There is no need to continue building this up any more than necessary. I'll appreciate your fellow-through on this so anyone assigned as a speaker from here out will have the word on this. Mr. Maurice Stans 7-23-62 Bob Haldeman date The best estimate we can now get for production cost of closed circuit TV for one hour on October 8th is $45,000 to $50,000. This is based on coverage of 12 cities, 6 of which would both send and receive and the other 6 would receive only. It is also based on one large screen in 10 of the locations and 2 screens in Los Angeles and San Francisco. This cost is highly fluid and subject to a great deal of negotiation, and of course totally dependent upon what specific 12 cities are involved; hence, it should be regarded only as a general guideline and not in any sense a firm bid. Charlie Farrington can provide any further information desired. date Herb Kalmbach 7-23-62 Bob Haldeman 8-m Hale Ashcraft, Republican candidate for the Assembly in La Jolla, feels that there is a great deal of Union leader dissatisfaction with the Democrats which can be turned to our advantage if properly handled. The specific complaint is that Senator Hugo Fisher has insisted that all Union contact with Governor Brown be handled through him, and consequently the Union leaders have no access to Brown. If they were assured access to RN, they might be favorably inclined to work with us. I think Gehres and/or the San Diego organization should get in touch with Ashcraft and lay out a practical program of recommendations on how we can further develop this situation. Bill Spencer 7-21-62 Bob Haldeman mer ee: Dick Ports We will set an appointment for Fletcher and RN in San Francisco on Friday, August 3rd. I am not sure we want to make a press conference out of this. My feeling at this point would be that it should be a meeting between the two, with Fletcher to announce afterwards whatever they agree should be said. Do not publicise this, but please give me Alice Leopeld's and your thoughts as to how this can best be handled. Also, let Fletcher know that RN hopes to get with him Friday, and find out what times would be possible. P.S. As I told you, we are having to set up some appointments from here for the day in San Francisco, and do not want the San Francisco office to set up anything on this particular trip. You should, however, get a hotel reservation for Thursday and Friday nights. In Booth Turner's absence, please work with Dick Ports on this. Herb Kalmbach and Mrs. Betty Haldeman 7-21-62 Bob Haldeman Utilisation of Volunteers date We must do a better job of utilisation of volunteers. Marry Keaton came up with several excellent suggestions along this line: 1) Get a battery of top level volunteers to make a complete inventory of all offers to help that have been received since KN announced in September; contact each of these people individually now and set up a card file on each one with an accurate evaluation of time availability, interest and qualifications. Then put a top level person in charge of disseminating this inventory to those who can utilize the help properly. I would be glad to discuss this with both of you if you wish. 2) I also understand from Keaton there is a Bob Birch at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher who might be excellent and give us a hand with this project. I think Herb should contact him and see if be is a) interested and b) able to help. 3) Keaton also suggests we send a mailing out now to all names on our lists to say we are in the final stages of tooling up for the final campaign and they will be hearing from us shortly. This would indicate our continuing interest during the summer period. Please give this consideration and let me know what you think we should do. date July 21, 1962 Dear Joe: Thanks for your note and the attached copy of the letter you received from Tom Rowe relating to the San Francisco Youth Association program. At this point, it does not appear poesible that Mr. Nixon will be able to be in San Francisco on Thursday, September 6th, which is the time you indicate for the taping session at the KGO studio. Is there a possibility that Mr. Nixon's part in the program could be video taped here in Les Angeles or at some alternate time in San Francisco so that it could then be included in your program on September 9th? We would also appreciate your letting us know a little more about the format of the program and exactly what you wish Mr. Nixon to do.
