Tuesday, December 11, 2007 Page 8 of 8 Research Department 9-20-62 Bob Haldeman Statement for CADLE Bulletin You have the file on this. Let's try to get the statement to them as much in advance of their October 15th deadline as is possible. J. R. White 9-20-62 Bob Haldeman Effective September 8th, Mr. Robert Hamilton joined the staff of the Nixon-for-Governor Committee in the position of Tour Manager. Mr. Hamilton's salary is at the monthly rate of $1,050.00. Candidate - Salaries budget is to be charged, and the amount involved has been covered by & shift within the budget previously approved. As set forth in my memorandum of September 10th, Mr. Hamilton also has full authority to draw against the Candidate - Travel budget in amounts specified by him, the requested funds to be used for travel expenses. J.R.White 9-20-62 Bob Haldeman Will you please make available to Mr. Robert Hamilton an amount of $300.00, cash advance for travel expenses, charged to Candidate - Travel budget. This sum should be delivered to him Monday morning, September 24th. J.R.White 9-19-62 Bob Haldeman Will you please make a check payable to Fred Haffner in the amount of $250.00 and charge to the Democrat Program? September 19, 1962 Dear Mr. Luellwitz: Following our telephone conversation this afternoon, I also called Grant Potter and told him I would send to your house two copies of the excerpts from Dick Nixon's speech in Eureka last week in which he outlined his six point program for California's timber based industry. These are attached. I did want you and also Mr. Potter to know that this program was prepared in close consultation with Charles Gray and George Craig. Messrs. Kobik and Miles of Arcata also helped with specific details on the particular problems of Humboldt County. I certainly hope you will agree that Dick's remarks, and more importantly, his program for action, will be helpful in enlisting the support of the leaders and members of the lumber industry for the remaining few weeks of this campaign. I would like very much to discuss this further with Mr. Potter, and hope that if it is convenient he might call me while he is in Los Angeles. Thank you again very much for your interest and cooperation. - WIN WITH MIXON - H. R. Haldeman Mr. Gus Luellwitz 216 South Cliffwood Avenue West Los Angeles 49, California cc: Mr. Grant Potter (enclosed) Loie Gaunt 9-19-62 Dorothy Wright Dear Loie - Art Dolan sent this list down with a request that an RN letter be sent. They are all Finance Chairmen -- but in some cases, a carry-over from the Primary -- or they are serving as Finance and County Chairmen. Ed Slevin has marked the list a) for new appointment; b) carry-over from primary and c) dual role. At this point, Bob agrees we should skip all except the new appointments which means only two letters are involved. You may want the complete list for your records. September 19, 1962 Dear Bob: Thanks very much for your letter about John Carley who has been recommended to us by Congressman Osmers. We will certainly follow-up on this. There is no question we need all the help we can get - and especially from "Nixon fans" like John Carley. We will get in touch with the young man and see what might be worked out. Please also thank Congressman Osmers for the referral. Best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman Hon. Bob Wilson House Office Building Washington 25, D. C. Rose Mary Woods 9-19-62 Bob Haldeman Betty Granger Reid My contact with Betty Granger Reid was immediately following the primary. I explained we were in the process of finalizing programs for the general election period and had, at the time, nothing definite about which to write her but that we would follow up with her later. It was then referred to Herb Kalmbach. Dick Ports also received a letter from her, which he referred to Herb. Herb wrote her on September 11th. She is not a secretary and there hasn't been a spot on the staff - physically or financially - where she could be employed. Herb advised her of the status quo, and did say he would like very much to meet her and hoped she would stop into the headquarters when she was next in Los Angeles. Maurice Stans 9-19-62 Bob Haldeman Dear Maury: Attached is copy of my acknowledgment to Art Dolan of the list of contributors employed by the Columbia Division of U.S. Steel, together with the list which shows names, addresses and amounts. I assume Art has sent the check (total $1500.00), or if not, that you will follow up with him. In talking with him on the phone later, I suggested that from here out he should send this information directly to you. September 19, 1962 Dear Art: Your note of September 18th was received today. The list of contributors employed by the Columbia Division of U. S. Steel, has been forwarded to Maury Stans so that proper processing and acknowledgments can be set up. You know without my saying be will be glad to see something like this come in. So are we. Many thanks, and best regards. - WIN WITH NIXON - H. R. Haldeman Mr. Arthur J. Dolam, Jr. Vice President Blyth & Co., Inc. Russ Building San Francisco, California RN 9-19-62 Bob Haldeman Your memo of 9-10 re: Central Committee Chairmen (copy att.) Beginning today, Ed Slevin and Bill Stover are touring Southern California, meeting with each County Chairman. They will wind up with Parkinson, to report to him and suggest how he can work into this operation. By the end of this week, Southern California should be covered. Slevin has set up the same procedure for Northern California with some of his field men who have been well briefed. They also are on the road. Loie Gaunt 9-19-62 Dorothy Wright Loie - - here is the list from Alan Nichols which we have just discussed on the phone. O - I feel better about burdening you with this since you assured me you had a generalized form letter which would probably cover the situation. Nichols' suggested drafts at least identify the individuals. - if Bob H. initials this, I guess that gives the official go-ahead, and he will know that you have been forewarned. - many thanks. X September 19, 1962 Dear Pat: We will be glad to follow through with Carel Harner. Just so you will know, our procedure is to have a field man personally contact the person -- in this case Miss Harner. Re will see that she has our printed material, the large picture of RN she has requested etc. Additionally, one of the research staff will write her, giving her information on the labor stand, and of course she will be given a supply of RN's statement on the AFL-CIO convention. I am sending your letter to Herb Kalmbach so that he can set up the contact to be made by the field man, and am sure this will be handled as promptly as possible. Let me know if there is any further question. Very best. Sincerely, Dorothy M. Wright CCI Herb Kalmbach Herb Kalmbach 9-19-62 Dorothy Wright Dear Herb: - per our conversation, here is Pat Hitt's letter about Carol Harner, and copy of my reply which sets forth the procedure you said would be followed in this particular case. - many thanks. Date September 18, 1962 Dear Les: Thanks very much for your letter of September 16th. We have checked into the Fresno situation, and have been told a couple of new people have been added to the picture who are rapidly straightening things out and are stirring up party type interest in Selland's campaign. We understand too that Pettit is working on the financial end of it, so it should be getting off the ground. In any event, we have someone going into Fresno within the next few days who will check it out first-hand. I appreciate your interest and help, Les. And I also agree you have enough problems in San Diego without branching into other areas. St. Johns O'Melveny & Myers 433 South Spring Street Los Angeles 13, California Research 9-16-62 Bob Haldeman Bob Minckler handed me the attached material (Bulletin - Capital Research Company). He feels we should be especially aware of the fact the California index of State Manufacturing Production is at 132 for 1962 compared to 100 in 1957. This compares to the nation as a whole at 118, Ohio at 113, and Pennsylvania at 108. As noted, California leads the economy up, and we should be aware of this when we are trying to make a case against this. September 15, 1962 Dear Miss Blunden: Your letter of September 12th to Mr. Nixon and the tape of X Dr. Lantos' remarks were handed to me, and I do want to acknowledge and thank you for both. date I also want to assure you Dick Nixon will be exceedingly grateful for your generous thought in making the recording File - Area File of Dr. Lantes' address available to us, and for the sentiments and good wishes expressed in your letter. $ Realizing the tape undoubtedly contains pertinent and usable information, we are having it run off immediately. As you will quickly realize, here is someone who was extremely thoughtful, and took the time and trouble to follow through in getting the tape of Dr. Lantos' remarks to us. We haven't heard it as yet, but it probably does have some usable material. My thought in passing this correspondence along to you is to suggest you get in touch with Miss Blunden promptly, and fin d out whether she might be interested in organizing the Teachers for Nixon in Alameda County. You might also attempt to determine whether Dr. Roderick would be interested in coming out openly or privately for RN. In any event, this follow-up should be accomplished without delay, and I'll appreciate your handling it and letting me know the result of your contact. Many thanks. Research 9-16-62 Bob Haldeman The attached fax copy of letter received from Miss Margaret Blunden will explain the source and background of the enclosed tape. Copy of my acknowledgment is also attached. Apparently there is some usable material here. Will you see that the tape is run off as quickly as possible? It does not have to be returned, but I would like to know if there is anything here worthwhile. Thanks. A1 Moscow 9-16 Bob Haldeman Your memo 9/14 re: RA Barbecue in Santa Maria Requests for speakers like this should always be referred to the Speakers Bureau -- never to RN. Maury Stans 9-16-62 Bob Haldeman Phil Davis Phil Davis called me several weeks ago, saying he and his brother Tom wish to make a substantial contribution to the campaign. He suggested they would make available their aero- commander with pilot and all expenses up to $5,000, and that they would also make a cash contribution of an additional $5,000 - or a total contribution of about $10,000. It now appears, and I have so notified Phil, that we will not be able to take advantage of his offer of the plane since we will have to use a larger plane during the campaign. When I told him this, he indicated they of course still wanted to make a contribution, but I am not sure whether he intends to give us a total of $5,000 or more. In any event, Phil should be contacted on a top level basis, and I am sure he will come through. Schedule 9-16-62 Bob Haldeman L.A. Precinct Workers Rally I covered in an earlier memorandum the fact RN committed himself to do a Los Angeles County Precinct Workers meeting sometime in the campaign. Don Anderson, Executive Director of the County Central Committee, called the other day to suggest we plan for an evening rally around the week of October 8th in either Pan Pacific or Shrine Auditorium. They would expect between 5,000 and 7,000 precinct workers. I suggested the alternative of letting the workers in free to the October 8th Dinner, since this would have even more excitement than a straight rally, and would give them more recognition. Don seemed to think this was a good idea, but it should be followed up. RN 9-16-62 Bob Haldeman Current Status - Democratic Committees We now have 500 solid Democratic names and are going to go ahead with the announcement of this Committee next week. We are working with Leone Baxter and others on lining up key big name Democrats for the anti-CDC activity, some of whom will also endorse Nixon. The Moore operation has not made a great deal of progress. He does have both Hamilton and Stewart signed up literally on his statement blasting Brown and the Democratic primary. He does not have any other defeated candidates firmly signed up, but claims he has contacted about 40 with favorable reaction. He has been told to go ahead with the preparation of his Newsletter which will include statements by each of the participating Democratic candidates. Assuming this, in its final form, is useful, we will let him print and distribute an initial run of 60,000 copies. This activity has now reached the point where we will arrive at a moment of truth and will know whether or not we have anything. Mrs. Betty Haldeman 9-16-62 Bob Haldeman Bumper Strips We are failing dismally on every effort the Southern California organization is trying to make regarding bumper strip squads. Maybe one of your good gals could take this on as Southern California or Statewide Chairman, and work out all kinds of good ideas for getting bumper strips put on cars. The same process I mentioned for literature distribution could be used, with kids going to the door, ringing the bell, and asking permission to put a bumper strip on the car. Hank has been doing this with some success in our area. Also, kids could set up lemonade stands to raise money for the Nixon campaign, and then when people come up to buy, they could ask permission to put the bumper strips on their cars. We need some off-beat ideas at this point -- and lots of them. Each one should be publicized as it gets going. It's worth a good story. Herb Kalmbach 9-16-62 Bob Haldeman Herb - - may I please have a report on the latest contact made with Betty Granger Reid? John Ehrlichman 9-16-62 Bob Haldeman cc: Nick Rune Booth Turner Bob Hamilton should always be with RN - in all forms of transportation - with no exceptions. This means we don't use a two-seat helicopter again, since it makes it impossible, when RN and PN are together, for Bob to be with him. Bob should always ride in RN's car, and be on the same bus or any other mode of conveyance being used. Please be sure the Advance Men are aware of this and will always set it up this way. Rose Mary Woods 9-16-62 Bob Haldeman Both the Northern and Southern Finance Committees (Stans and Dolan) have asked if we could compile a key list of all those who urged RN to run for Governor. The purpose would be to go back to these people for substantial contributions at this tim e, reminding them of their responsibility in supporting/his campaign. Mrs. Betty Haldeman 9-16-62 Bob Haldeman Literature Distribution Another project that needs some thought. We should set up a corps of people to deliver pamphlets and other literature on a door-to-door basis in selected areas. It seems to me this might be done in the afternoons, after school -- and on Saturdays and Sundays, by mothers with kids in the 10 to 15 year old bracket. One mother could take 2 or 4 kids in a car, drop them at one end of a block, and have one on each side of the street; she could then cruise along with them in the same way they do on Halloween for "trick or treat". I would appreciate having your thoughts on this. Herb Kalmbach 9-16-62 Bob Haldeman Management Meeting Beginning this Tuesday, September 18th, there will be a regularly scheduled meeting of a so-called Management Committee, which will include you, Ed Slevin, and others not yet determined. This will enable us to cover policy etc. Will you please mark your calendar for this meeting each Tuesday, 10:00 A.M., my office? Mrs. Betty Haldeman 9-16-62 Bob Haldeman Regarding the attached speech mail-out project: David Hunter has said he would supply you with as much information as he now has available. If the list of subjects is not forthcoming or if any problems develop, please let me know. He does have a problem of "lead time" from Schedule, but we should try to work this project out, if at all possible. RN 9-16-62 Bob Haldeman M.C. for Telethons Dick Powell is not able to be the emcee, nor does he feel he will be able to appear on the Telethons. Actually, we were not considering him for emcee, but rather as the chief star and procurer of other stars. The man we were considering was Bill Leyden, with Jack Linkletter as the other possibility. Neither one will be able to take on the assignment. We have therefore decided to get a top professional announcer with good emcee ability on a paid basis to use as our back-up emcee for all the Telethons. We will thus be assured of always having someone available who will be handling things our way. After careful auditions and screening, the man selected for this assignment is Rex Maze from San Diego who is dedicated to you, extremely competent, and I think will do an excellent job. He will be in the office early this next week and I hope you will have an opportunity to meet him. We will of course plan to have several top stars on each Telethon, and they will perform some of the emcee chores. However, I am sure you will recognize the need for our having our own man on hand at all times. September 15, 1962 Dear Put: I have read your letter of September 13th and your draft of the pamphlet "How to Win on Election Day". It sounds fine to me. My main thought is that it would seem the copy could be edited down a bit, and you might want to attempt to do this before putting it into print. Also, the voters' cards are important, so you might want to stress that wherever and whenever possible, these be made available. Best regards. - WIN WITH NIXON - H. R. You listed several attributes which you wanted to see in a man of your choice, and I - taking the liberty of sending you herewith some material which you will find of interest. On Anti-Communism - a folder which reprints two articles Dick wrote for the Los Angeles Times on this subject. On Reorganization - a copy of Dick's speech given before the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco, outlining his plan for reorganizing the California state government. On Veterans' affairs - a press release on the formation of our Statewide Veterans Committee. On Union Control - a statement Dick made in answer to Pat Brown's remarks st the recent California Labor Federation Convention. Mr. Brown 2 September 15, 1962 Dick mentioned he would like very much to get a group of the old SCAT people together, and I wonder if this is a project you would be able to take on? If you do plan to form a group, X know Dick would like to have the chance to see all of you again. I am asking Dan Waters of our office to get in touch with you regarding your organizational plan so that we can give you any help you might need. Thanks very much for your support and assistance. September 14, 1962 Mr. Warren Spooner 12360 Osborne Street Pacoima, California Dear Mr. Spooner: Mr. Moscow has advised me of his visit with you. As I am sure you will understand, Mr. Haldeman is going to be out of the area most of the time for the balance of the campaign in view of the heavy schedule for the next six weeks. In the interest of expediting your contact with our organization and answering any questions you might have, it would be extremely helpful if you would write us fully about the subject of your concern and what you have in mind in connection with it. Please be assured we would appreciate having any specific information or data which you would care to submit to us in the interest of the overall campaign effort. Mr. Haldeman is interested in having your contact with our office appropriately handled in his absence, and the referral to Mr. Moscow this morning for a personal visit, and my follow-up letter are for this specific purpose. I know of your most effective participation in prior years and want to assure you we are exceedingly grateful and fortunate to have your cooperation and support in what is going to be one of the hardest hitting campaigns in California's history. With kind regards and good wishes. Sincerely, September 14, 1962 Dear Downey: Upon my return to the office today, I found your letter regarding Mr. Fairbairn. He certainly should receive a letter from Dick, and this will be done. In the future, Downey, would you draft such a letter for us so that we are sure to get all pertinent facts included? You have outlined enough information in your letter this time to enable the letter to be written, but a draft helps considerably to expedite it. We will also keep in mind the requested appointment with RN, and will see if this can't be worked into the schedule the next time he is in San Francisco.
