May I please have a check in the amount of
$1,500.00 payable to Bozell & Jacobs, charged to the
Democrat Program.
This is needed today, if at all possible; if
not, the first thing tomorrow (Thursday) morning.
Statement to cover is on the way and will be given to you
immediately it is received.

I understand we have a great deal of very valuable
information on small boat harbor scandals.
Do we plan to use this?
A number of our strong supporters are very anxious
to know.

RN asked that you follow through on the
Joe Holt, Ferd Mendenhall group to get whatever money
they are planning to contribute. RN says Joe made the
comment to him that this group would be good for a sub-
stantial amount of money.

Joe Martin says we should hit even harder every time
we are in the North on the protection of the green belts
along the lines of the Sunday radio broadcasts. He feels
the "Keep California Green" theme has universal and strong
appeal in the North.

Dear Phil:
Just wanted you to know how
much I appreciate your taking the time
and trouble to prepare the comprehensive
memorandum on suggestions for Telethons.
As was expressed to you by
everyone concerned, you did an outstanding
job, and San Diego was by far the best
of the bunch.
Thanks again.
WIN WITH NIXON!

Dear Leonard:
First, let me say that as I am sure you
know, Dick has been spending a great deal of time with
the various nationality groups of all sizes and types.
In just the last few weeks, he met with
the Japanese group, the Chinese group and the Mexican
group. Today he attended a reception for 5,000
nationality members in San Francisco. Some months
ago he spoke at the Polish Independence Day Celebration
in San Francisco. We have featured various important
nationality leaders on the Telethons, and of course
Dick started out his campaign with a meeting with
LACRANC.
As I am sure you realize, there has never
been any intention to ignore the nationality groups;
on the contrary, we are very much aware of this important
segment of the voting public. We have, however, devoted
all of our efforts to getting Dick maximum exposure
to large numbers of each of the nationality groups,
rather than setting up small meeting with one or two
leaders. This same policy has been followed in all
aspects of the campaign. I am sure you will agree it is
a wise one.
I certainly think your suggestion of getting
some pictures with various nationality leaders for
2
publication in their papers would be very worthwhile,
and I know the Schedule Office is trying to work
this out for you - possibly this Saturday.
As to your suggestion that Dick join the Honorary
Committee of the Americans for Congressional Action
to Free the Baltic States, I am sorry to say that his
firm policy regarding all such requests for membership

Fellow Californian:
Your vote on November 6 will be one
of the most important decisions in the
history of California, for the man you elect
will be the first California Governor ever
to lead the first state in population.
Among my twenty major programs for a
greater California are specific plans to cut
the cost of government by $50 million next year
in order to keep taxes from continuing to
skyrocket; to smash the nareotics traffic by
giving the death penalty to big-time dope
peddlers; and to create one million new jobs
in four years by initiating a "California
Crusade for Business Investment."
Whether you are a Democrat, Republican
or Independent, I urge you to fellow the
California tradition of voting on the basis
of what the man stands for rather than the
party label he wears.
In this spirit, I ask your consideration
of my programs for a greater California as you
make your decision on November 6.
Sincerely,
Richard M. Nixon

Dear AB:
Thanks very much for your letter and the
copy of the supplemental sheet you are having produced
in the AFRO AMERICAN. This is a terrific job, we all
agree.
However, we are already committed to a
supplement in a California Negro paper which would
preclude our considering this as an additional piece.
Also, as you know, we can't afford to use the
"Vote Republican" idea out here. Any other place or
time, I would say this was one of the most effective
presentations we could possibly use.
Yesterday's events were outstanding. The
General was great. The airport arrivals, the motorcade

Harry Keaton reports on his recent swing North -
1)
there is a real material-literature shortgage
in some of the counties in No. Calif. - bumper
strips, supplies etc. -- particularly in
Alameda; said if headquarters have to buy these
supplies, it's a real bottleneck.
2)
thinks some method should be devised of handling
teenagers who come in for supplies; apparently
there are two extremes in handling them:
1) they are welcomed - given whatever they want,
are never asked what they are going to do with
them, whether they are going to their parents
or what; then outside the headquarters will be
found stickers on the street - just wasted;
or -
2) they are told "we cannot give supplies to children".
Harry recommends maybe a mimeo. sheet - directed to
the teenagers - explaining the purpose - *****
urging them to be "good Ambassadors" . the cost
involved etc.
3)
He said the YRs in San Fran. did a terrific job,
really knocked themselves out, on the parade. At the
Dinner 10/8, the TARS got a big plug - but not the
YRs, and their noses are a bit out of joint; he
wants an RM letter to the President of the Club; I asked
him to draft up, give full name and address and send
over here - which he is doing.
4)
Recommends an RN drop=by the a big cecktail party the
YRs are planning in San. Fran. and I told him he
should talk to schedule office on this -- transferred
him to Nick Rune.
Also started going into a few personality problems - Ruth Watson,
Emily Pike et al --- and I said you were acquainted with the
situation -- not much that could be done about it with only
- Fame unales to 00 -- an he stonned talkin @ shout it.

Dear Jim:
Harry Keaton, State YR President, has just
reported a couple of items to us resulting from his
recent swing through some of the Northern California
Counties.
For your information and follow through:
1)
Apparently there is a real material - literature
shortage in some of the counties - bumper
strips, supplies etc. - particularly in
Alameda; perhaps this should be checked out.
2)
Keaton thinks some method should be devised
for handling Teenagers who come into the
various headquarters for supplies; apparently
there are two extremes being used:
1) they are welcomed, never questioned, given
what they want, in any quantity, and then
later the material will be found on the streets,
just wasted; or
2) they are told "we cannot give supplies to children".
Keaton recommends maybe a mimsographed sheet,
directed to the Teenagers, explaining the purpose,
urging them to be "good Ambassadors", citing the
costs involved, the importance of getting the
material properly distributed etc.

I don't know what, if any, progress has been made on
fund-raising within the lumber industry.
Gus Luellwitz has apparently made some contribution to
the campaign, perhaps through Henry Duque. He has
indicated he would give more under the proper circumstances,
which I assume means if Dick takes the right position on
lumber.
RN's lumber speech of September 13th, given in Eureka,
was prepared in consultation with Charles Gray, President
of American Forest Products, and Mr. George Craig,
Secretary-Manager of Western Lumber Manufacturers Association,
which should satisfy Luellwitz' requirement, since
his top man, Grant Petter, told me these two were the men
to work with.
With this in mind, I think a follow-up on Luellwits for
additional personal support, and with Grant Potter in Dinuba,
California, for possible assistance in contacting other
big money in the lumber industry, would be worthwhile.
Copies of RN's speech are available, if needed.

A good suggestion was made at the Northern
California meeting regarding the best way to handle
hospital coverage. They have found that rather than
have each Precinct Chairman be required to follow up his
people who might be in the hospital, it is better to
assign a separate volunteer chairman to each major hospital,
with all of our people working through that person, so that
large numbers of Precinct Chairmen aren't wasting their
time running up and down the halls of the same hospital.

October 20th editorial which is really great.
Don't you agree it would be valuable for us to
order reprints for a broad statewide coverage
of farmers other than those who subscribe to the
CALIFORNIA FARMER? At the very least, I think
we should get enough to supply copies to the
Editors and Publishers of every weekly newspaper
and every daily in agricultural areas, as well
as every radio and TV station servicing agricultural
areas.
The significance of the CALIFORNIA FARMER taking
this strong editorial position for the first time
in 108 years should be forcefully brought home to

Needless to say, we are delighted that

Seriously, the position you have taken
in this vitally important election is one which
I strongly feel will be of great significance

I think you will agree that the tide
turned strengly in this campaign on October 1st when
the two candidates made their joint appearance in
San Francisco. The outcome, I don't believe, was
ever in deubt, but it certainly appears now that
the margin of victory will be considerably greater
than any of us had dared hope.
Your support and your outstanding method
