May 28, 1959 Dear Mr. Haldeman: We have started to enlist loyal and capable young Republicans under forty years of age to form a Young Men's Committee of thirty to fifty members to work with the senior members of the United Republican Finance Committee. It was suggested to me that you would make an ex- cellent member of this Committee, and I am taking the liberty of writing you to ask you to join our team. The future effectiveness of the Republican Party depends to a great degree on capable young men such as you being active in its development. We will hold the first meeting of the Committee on Friday, June 5th, at 5:30 p.m. at the River Club, and hope that you will be able to attend. Cocktails will be served. Governor Mark O. Hatfield of Oregon will be our guest of honor. Please let me know as soon as possible whether you will be present. As you know, Governor Hatfield, who is only thirty- six years old, was one of the few Republicans to be elected Governor in 1958. He has made an outstanding record since his election and is one of the rising young men of the Republican Party. Since we have such an important task ahead and will need the best talent we can obtain, I hope that you will become a member of the Young Men's Committee. Sincerely, P.S. Hope you can come Bill Barden - any event William A. M. Burden Mr. Robert Haldeman J.
