MEMORANDUM
May 12, 1960
Re: Chicago . Travel Times
The following travel times are ground times, traveling by
car under a good Police escort. (That is sufficient Motorcycle
Police to keep the motorcade moving at all times.)
Midway Airport to the Blackstone
12 miles via a number of alternative routes:
20 minutes
O'Hare Airport (Jets) to the Blackstone
28 to 30 miles, depending upon the route:
35 minutes
Meigs Helliport
1-1/2 miles to Blackstone:
5 to 7 minutes
Parade Situation
The Secret Service does not have any information for the
Chicago area for a parade route, but they say that normally it takes
about 120 city blocks per hour for a parade with either the President
or Vice President to pass.
Previous Conventions
The Secret Service has had no experience in recent years
with a Convention in Chicago. In 1952, they were not charged with
the responsibility of protecting the President or the Vice President
until after they were the President and Vice President elect.
