Klein FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Press Secretary to the Vice President Nixon-Lodge Campaign Headquarters 1146 19th St., N.W., Washington 6, D.C. Calling the third week of his intensified drive for the Presidency "the best we have had," Vice President Richard Nixon this week announced a 6,000-mile Western jaunt into seven states beginning October 10. During the tour the Vice President will visit cities in Illinois, Montana, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona and California. This will be the third time he has invaded his native state since his nomination for the Presidency. He will con- front Senator Kennedy for the third time on television from Los Angeles on Thursday, October 13. This week--the fourth of his grass roots campaign--the Vice President is visit- ing the South, heavily populated Eastern cities and the Midwest. The second television meeting between the two Presidential candidates will take place in Washington, D. C. on Friday, October 7. Commenting on the third week of the campaign, a Nixon aide said: "We are well satisfied with the progress of the campaign. The Vice President is pacing himself and will gradually accelerate his speaking tours and increased activities right up to election day." The Vice President drew heavy crowds in a tour of Binghamton, Schenectady, Troy and other points in upstate New York despite a constant downpour of rain that plagued his campaign trail during the third week. More than 25,000 stood in the rain in Memphis, Tennessee, to hear the Vice President and 250,000 greeted him in Boston. Meanwhile, campaign activity at Nixon-Lodge Headquarters in Washington continues unabated. Volunteer leaders from 45 states attended a Volunteers for Nixon-Lodge workshop meeting recently to set forth plans for the "homestretch" campaign drive. The Vice President climaxed the two-day meeting by telling the Volunteers that their organization must provide the 10 per cent "edge" over the straight party vote needed for victory. "If you succeed, we will also succeed," he said. more Volunteers for Nixon-Lodge is the independent campaign organization whose job it is to enlist the support of Democrats and Independents for the Nixon-Lodge ticke The organization is headed by Charles S. Rhyne, national chairman, and Peter Flanig director. The Vice President commented that Democrats and Independents have provided the margin of his victories in every state election since the first time he ran for Congress in 1946. He said he has noted a strong feeling of interest in the present campaign in all parts of the country. "To me, this means the campaign is moving rapidly and is supported with great enthusiasm," he said. "The coming Presidential election is not strictly a party test, but is one where the voters will judge the men, the issues, the programs, and the leadership offered." Volunteers for Nixon-Lodge have also launched "Operation SNAP," a do-it- yourself political action campaign for busy people who want to do "something" in the Presidential election. SNAP--for "Support Nixon at the Polls"--literally is a snap. It provides the busy housewife and/or the busy breadwinner with free, easy-to- do instructions and materials--a 47-piece kit of pamphlets, campaign buttons, postcards, window stickers and sign-up cards. Informal "kitchen debates" among persons of mixed party affiliations are encouraged, using the vehicle of the backyard barbecue, the buffet supper or the coffee party as an opportunity for persons to make new friends and provide material for stimulating discussions of concern to all citizens in a Presidential election year. Kits are being mailed automatically to persons expressing a desire to participate in the Nixon-Lodge campaign. They are available at no cost upon request to Volunteers For Nixon-Lodge, Post Office Box 7398, Washington 4, D. C. Five women in campaign headquarters recently set off a political chain reaction esigned to produce an explosion of campaign activity by 1,600,000 housewives and more 3--roundup business girls across the nation between now and election day. They are Mrs. Carol Arth of Redlands, California, associate director of the Volunteers for Nixon-Lodge and four assistants--two of them Texas Democrats--who are spearheading the women's activities program on the independent campaign organization. Their plan, called "Operation Multiplication," is a four-step program in which each campaign worker activitates from 1 to 20 other women. "Over 30,000 women, many of them Independents and Democrats, have written to us expressing a desire to help in this crucial election," says Mrs. Arth. "Our program is designed to give each of these women the campaign material and suggestions with which she can enlist her friends and neighbors and, in doing so, multiply our strength many times between now and November 8." Working with Mrs. Arth in the preparation of project aids and materials is Mrs. Bennie Swenson of Dallas, Texas, program director for women's activities. Three regional directors work out of Washington headquarters. They are: Mrs. Grace Kennedy Winn, a native of Waxahachie, Texas, and now of Washington; Mrs. Gerda M. Crow of Bethesda, Maryland, and Mrs. Marion Hancock McConaughy of Chevy Chase, Maryland. ## October 4, 1960
