Tiree more are scheduled for the Texas, North Dakota and St. Louis trips and one (Cy Laughter) has been dropped from consideration as an Advance Man. In addition to the group who were at the School, we have added three more possibilities all of whom have made a trip with us. None of this group has had an opportunity as yet to make a complete Advance on his own. All of them have worked directly with me. On the fortheewing Camden trip and the British Exposition in New York, we will then use two of the Advance Men on their own. Although it is difficult at this point to try and draw a final evaluation on the relative ability of these men, I will run through the group which we now have under consideration in order of their estimated ability at this point. or the total group of 13 now under consideration, we have two in whom I have complete confidence and who have appeared at least satisfactory to all the rest of the group including Don Hughes, Herb Klein and Rese Woods. These two are: John Ehrlichman - Seattle, Washington - Attorney - Age 35 - Married - 5 children, ages 9 years through 6 months. Recommended by Haldeman and Loie Gaunt. Has worked in Seattle area and around state of Washington in Congressional esmpaigns and in local suburban polities. Tom Pownall - Potomae, Maryland - Presently employed with Convair in Washington, D.C. - Age 38 - Married - 2 children, ages 11 and 8. Recommended by Herb Klein. Worked on advance and trip to Detroit. Is available on leave of absence basis from Convair without salary for whatever period is required during the campaign. Has been active in civic and local political affairs in LaJella, California. The next three in order of apparent ability have made trips with us and seem to be competent, but would still require some further training and help before being turned out on their own, as contrasted to Pownall and Mhrlichman, who I believe are ready to go now. James Marphy - Reckville Centre, New York - Currently with U. S. Dredging Corporation and Gallagher Bros. Sand & Gravel Cerporation - a family business - Age 31 - Bacheler. Has worked in a mumber of different political ac- tivities including New York State Youth for Eisenhower; very active in Y.R. Is presently Nixon-for-President chairman in Spokane. The next group of five have all made trips with us and I think follow very closely behind the preceding 3 in terms of promise and ability. Ned Sullivan - Yonkers, New York - Insurance business, family firm - Age 34 - Married - Four children, ages 8 through 1. Recommended by the Vice President and Mrs. Nixon. Graduate of Manhattan College. Served in the Air Corps from 1943 through 1946 as a radio gunner. Worked on the advance for the New England Exposition trip; helped out on the Miami trip and is handling the advance for the British Exposition. Spent some time in Indiana Primary campaign. Will be available as an Advance Man for whatever time needed, at no pay. The final three names on the present Prospect list have not yet done a trip with us but all will be doing one within the next month. They are: Stan Lothridge - Los Angeles, California - Kenyon & Eckhardt Advertising Agency. Age 33 - Bachelor - recommended by McWhorter. Graduate of University of California at Berkeley. Served in the Navy from 1945 to 1946. Available on a leave of absence basis from his agency at no cost. Has been very active in Young Re- publican activities in both Northern and Southern California. Worked with our group at the 1956 Convention in staging demon- strations, etc. Was originally considered as an Advance Man in 1956 but to my knowledge, did not actually make any trips. Fred Dixon - Presently employed by Folger, Nolan, Fleming, Hibbs investment banking concern - Age 38 - Bachelor - Recommended by Charlie McWhorter. Graduate of the University of Colorado and Wharton in Philadelphia. Served in the Army from 1943 to 1945. Available on a leave of absence from present employer at no cost to us. Political experience includes a large amount of Young Re- publican activity and participation in Republican organisation in District of Columbia. Alex Troffey - Oakland, California - Presently with Kaiser In- dustries. Age 38 - Married - Recommended by Herb Klein. Probably available on leave of absence basis. At this time I do not have complete data on Troffey This completes the list of 13 now under consideration. I think that from this group we will have an adequate number and quality of Advance Men if the campaign operation is to be run as presently contemplated. I do, however, feel it would be wise to keep our eye open for addi- tional prospects and try to train and have available several more men in reserve. Cy Laughter who was recommended by Don Hughes, has been dropped from consideration as an Advance Man because I understand he will be utilised for the Sports Committee and will not be available to us for Advance work. In addition to the 13 listed above, I have screened, and in many cases talked with, another 35 to 40 possibilities but I feel this group rep- resents the best that are available and do not feel that any of the rest should be considered at this time. BALTIMORE XX MARYLAND 12 Orevel 78795 February 16, 1960. Mr. Robert McCone Volunteer Suite 523 Washington Building 33 childle. Weds 1435 "G" St., N. W. Washington, D. C. age married 6mos. Dear Bob:- Reg. Reput As discussed at our meeting of February 12th, I am interested in supporting Vice President Nixon's presidential campaign to the extent that I would be willing to take a leave of absence from my present position, to assist in this endeavor from now until the November election. I hold a Bachelor of Social Science degree from Georgetown University (1949) and a Ph.d degree in geology from the Johns Hopkins University (1953). After two years as an exploration geologist with Standard Oil of California, I have spent the last five (5) years in the aerial survey industry connected with sales for various natural resources development programs. My present position is manager of sales for the Aero Service Corporation of Philadelphia, in the area of United States foreign aide programs involving natural resources develop- ment. This involves sales presentation with various United States agencies such as, State Department, International Coopera- tion Administration and the Development Loan Fund, as well as extensive overseas travel in the underdeveloped areas of North and Central Africa and South America in contact with foreign government officials and U. S. diplomatic personnel. In addition, I cover domestic sales for the U. S. mining industry which of course, means extensive travel in this country. My political experience is limited to support of Congressman James P. Devereux's during his unseccessful Maryland gubernatorial campaign. This involved the usual public rallies, coffee hours, fund raising and dealings with the press. Acc, Ed me White House three lack me Kengie JOHN CARROLL WHITAKER 106 Thicket Rd. BALTIMORE ** MARYLAND Bob, I certainly appreciate the time you have spent outlining the scope of your organization and I hope I can be of some assistance in supporting the Vice President's campaign. Sincerely JCW/h J John C. Whitaker March 7, 1960 TO: L. W. Hall FROM: Bob Haldeman Subject: Edward Gurnee Cumming After receiving your memorandum and attached resume regarding Ted Cumming, I gave him a call to discuss in general with him, his ideas on where he felt he might fit into the campaign or- genization. As you probably know, he does not have any very well defined idea of what he might want to do but seems to feel he does want to get into politics in some way. He at first indicated that any activity he might be engaged in would have to be confined to the New York area because of limitations of his having to stay with his job. Later, however, he indicated that under the right situation, he might give up his job in order to go to work with us. In this circumstance, however, he said he would have to have a paid job on the staff since he could not afford to work as a volunteer on a full-time basis. He indicated that one of his primary interests in politics would be in the field of public health, which of course would tie in with his medical training. Because he had no specific ideas and because of course I was unable in a phone conversation to evaluate the possibilities for him in our setup I suggested that he make a point of having a chat with you when you were next up in Oyster Bay during which you and he might be able to clarify some of the areas in which he might be most interested. As far as the Advance Han possibility is concerned, as you probably know, we are not hiring any advance men and what I'm looking for is some people who are so situated in business that they can take time off for 1 or 2 trips between now and the Convention and then would be available to us full-time after the convention to work through the duration of the intensive campaign. Itswould appear that Ed does not fit in this category. I also question whether his complete lack of political experience or any rdated experience in setting up organizations oramestings or working with committees or large groups of people would qualify him for an Advance Man assignment. I was very much impressed with his general attitude and so on, and - 2 - feel there probably should be a place somewhere for him in a campaign organization where his services could be put to good use. I will wait til I hear further from you before making any addi- tional contact with Ted. advance Prospect Cy LAUGHTER LAUGHTER CORP. DAYTON 1, OHTo February 13, 1960 BA 31241 Dear Bob: Don Hughes called me last week and said you would be contacting me so that we could get together. I thought I'd write you and tell you something about my plans. First of all, my wife is expecting a baby approximately March 24, so you see I'd like to try and get with you the first part of March, not trying to rush you. February 22nd I am in charge of a dinner. There will be 620 people there and on February 23 is our Cub Scouts, which I am Pack Master, I must be there too. That pretty well clears up my schedule. As for March, I'll be staying pretty close to home. Would like to fly out to Washington for a day or two at the most or some city you'll be visiting. I would like to talk with you about all this as it sounds very in- teresting and I would like to know if and when it would start. I work in the tool and die industry for a company owned by my father. We have approximately 300 people working. I went to night school learning the tool and die business. I'm 6'4", 215 lbs, brown eyes and brown hair, 34 years old will be 35 in July 26. Was in Infantry during World War II, wounded in shoul- der by German motor January 11, 1945. I get 20% disability. Married 13 years, one boy 10, girl 6 and we are expecting, as I mentioned be- fore.
