You were in a better position than any other city to make the comparison for us. All of your suggestions will be passed on to all of our advance men. May I say that I think you and your entire committee did a tremendous job that day. The Vice President and his entire staff were more than pleased with the enthusiasm, the turnout, and with the good will of the Texans. Best personal regards to everybody. September 20, 1960 JEANNE D. COLE CHAIRMAN EXECUTIVE SECRETARY LAKESIDE 1-5168 Mr. Ned Sullivan Office of Vice President Richard M. Nixon Senate Office Bldg. Washington, D. C. Dear Ned: I want to offer a few suggestions, based not only on our performance but also from observing Kennedy's appearance in Dallas the next day. 1. In Memorial Auditorium, prior to Kennedy's speech, pretty girls passed the hat for contribu- tions. In my opinion we could have picked up a sizeable amount this way. 2. As Kennedy people came in the auditorium, they were offered a small plastic American Flag. They waved them wildly when a point was made. 3. Bands in the parade should prepare to play continuously. I understand our bands stopped playing when their forward progress stopped. This didn't do anything to pep up the crowd, 4. Have a couple of people in each block to lead a cheer for Nixon. In many blocks people were silent when he passed. With a pre-arranged rooting section to lead the cheer, more enthusiasm could be whipped up. -2- 5. If an entertainment chairman will be needed, this should be made known well in advance for best results. 6. Our first objective should have been to fill the auditorium with other activities having lower priority. All in all, Nixon's visit was very well received. He did an especially good job on TV. Keep up the good work. Sincerely yours, Peter O'Lannell, In. Peter O'Donnell, Jr. E.A. County Chairman POD:dd
