R.H. c/s April 28, 1960 TO: Robert Finch FROM: H. R. Haldeman CONFIDENTIAL RE: Arizona convention I had a phone call from Charlie Farrington this morning in Phoenix on another matter and he reported on the Arizona convention. He was very much distressed by the fact that the convention of course, endorsed Goldwater for President but then made no mention whatsoever of Nixon as second choice or anything else. He said the Nixon telegram was well worded but was received quite indifferently and that there was no par- ticular interest in it by the group at the Convention. He also said most of the people take the attitude that Goldwater is their first and only choice and they're not interested in Nixon at all, even when he reminded them that obviously Nixon was going to be the nominee when the Convention finally met in July. Farrington was very much impressed with the wording of the Vice President's wire and said it was very good but unfortunately, no one paid much attention to it. The way Charlie puts it, it was very unfortunate, and he was disturbed by the way it was handled, but when the cips are down, these people will all be back in the Nixon camp. He just feels it is unfortunate they are taking the attitude at this point that they seem to have. He says up to two months ago, everyone was so strong for Nixon, they could taste it, but once the idea of nominating Goldwater for President got started, they lost all sense of proportion. He said Goldwater did mention in his speech that the Vice President made a statement last week saying that the basis of the campaign was going to be between those who believed in a strong central government and those who believed in individual rights and that this was well-received. R. Haldeman HRH:ofo Enclosure 4/28/60 H. R. H. c/s April 28, 1960 Mr. L. Richard Guylay 1627 K Street, N. W., Washington, D. C. Dear Loui I think the questionnaire looks good as it stands, with a couple of minor suggestions that I have noted on same. The one question I would have is the value of asking this group for their opinions on trial heats. I think that you'll end up with such a heavy Nixon win figure in every case that it would be almost meaningless. However, I can see it might give us some measure of relative strength of Democratic potential apponents and I would not toss the question out unless the rest of you feel it is of only limited value, Other than that, I think it's ready and would suggest we go ahead right away. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRH:cfo Enclosures 4/28/60 H. R. H. c/s April 28, 1960 TO: Bob Finch FROM: H. R. Haldeman Bob Ladd advised today that Arnold R. Jones, the present director of TVA in Knoxville, Tennesee, has indicated his desire to help in the campaign. He would be most anxious to work himself in any way that he might be of value and would be able to pro- vide advice and information on TVA matters if we need that. Also, he can probably help in gathering names in the TVA area which of course, includes some pretty critical swing states. 4/28/60 H.R.H. c / s April 28, 1960 Mr. James Mailliard 601 Montgomery Street San Francisco 11, California Dear Jim: AIR MAIL Thanks very much for your prompt reply to my sug- gestion that you join us in the forthcoming campaign. I can certainly understand your situation and the reason for your inability to do so, but I must say that I am very sorry that you are too involved to take on additional responsibility. I am sure you can be of tremendous help at the local level and we will be calling upon you in that regard before very long. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRH10fo 4/28/60 H. R. H. c/s April 28, 1960 TO: Dean Borton FROM: H. R. Haldeman RE: Mail Schedule It seems to me that it is not particularly sensible to have mail deliveries to the Vice President's office at 9:15 in the morning and 4:00 in the afternoon. Would it not be better to add a later A.M. delivery so that material processed in the morning can get over there sometime before the end of the day? This could be done either by moving the 9:15 delivery to 11:00 or 11:30 or by adding an 11:30 delivery. In my case, at least, this would eliminate a great deal of need for special messengers, since I do quite a bit of work at home at night which is being typed up in the morning and which has to get over to the Vice President's office by noon. cc:p.
