PERSONAL
Dear Mr. McKinney:
I am very sorry that it didn't work out for us to
get together while I was in Chicago this weekend.
I tried to reach you at home Saturday afternoon but
there was no answer and there was no opportunity for
me to get back to you on Sunday.
In the absence of an opportunity to get together, I
would appreciate it if you would send me, as soon as
you can, a complete resume of your personal, business,
and political background, together with any thoughts
you may have on what kind of activity you would be most
interested in, and your evaluation of where you could be
of the most value.
I would also be interested in what the terms of your
leave of absence would be with Marpro.
Again, I'm sorry it didn't work out for us to get to-
gether. I will look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
H. R. Haldeman

RE: Chicago car drivers
The following were the drivers of the cars we used in Chicago on this
last visit:
1) Lawrence M. Cohen, 7019 Chappel Street, Chicago
2) Edward J. Cunningham, 5311 Cornell Avenue, Chicago
3) Fred K. Grant, 5522 South Ellis Avenue, Chicago
# 4) Bill Sadd, 5469 Hyde Park Boulevard, Chicago
# 5) Harvey B. Stephens, 5330 South Blackstone Avenue, Chicago
The two names that are marked with an # are the two fellows who have
driven the cars for us on all of our trips to Chicago since the trip
during the 1958 campaign when we first used the University of Chicago
group. All of this list are University of Chicago law students but
these last two guys have been with us every time, while the other three
are all new on this trip. As I mentioned to you, they all gave up being
over at the University of Chicago Law School ceremonies Sunday afternoon
with Governor Rockefeller in order to drive the cars for us. I think
special mention should be made for the two old-timers since the boss
seems to be quite impressed with this group and the fact that they do
come and drive the cars for us when we're in Chicago.

RE: River Forest School appearance - May 1, River Forest, Ill.
The attached letter from Mr. Sugden gives the addresses of some of
the principal people in the River Forest appearance. I will itemize
their connections herewith because I don't think you can decipher my
notes on Sugden's letter.
1) Neal Bidwill - son of Sen. Bidwill who introduced RN and
was master of ceremonies at the program at the school.
Neal handled coordination of many of the details of the
visit and was in on all arrangements and planning.
2) Walter O'Brien - worked with Neal Bidwill in coordinationf
of over-all plans and was the original guy to get this thing
going.
3) John Schwarz - School engineer at Roosevelt Jr. High School.
He took care of all the physical arrangements; setting up
platforms, roping off the restricted areas, etc., and is a
very cooperative and kindly little fellow and should be given
a warm letter of thanks. He did not meet the Vice President,
to my knowledge.
4) Mr. Gerard is the Chief of Police in River Forest and should
receive the standard Police Chief letter.
5) Mr. Flohr is the Fire Chief in River Forest and had a rescue
wagon and several of his firemen on hand to aid in crowd con-
trol.
6) Mr. Wencel was the man in charge of the River Forest Elementary
School Orchestra - a very large and very good school orchestra
which played prior to the meeting and played the National An-
them during the ceremonies. The Vice President made some remarks
from the stand on how impressed he was with the orchestra and how
well they played, saying it was a much better orchestra than the
high school orchestra he played in at Whittier.
7) Mr. Warfield is the President of the Board of Education and as
such he had a reception commemorating the public school cen-
tennial at his home Sunday night. He asked the Vice President
personally to attend the reception, although no formal invita-
t tion had been issued, and of course, we were unable to do so.
Mention of this should be made in the letter, I think.
. 2 -
8) Mr. Sugden is the Superintendent of Schools and was in
overall charge of the entire visit; did an excellent job
and was most cooperative and should be warmly thanked.
In addition to the people covered in Sugden's letter enumerated
above, the following should be noted.
The River Forest Board of Education presented gifts to Pat for
Tricia and Julie. The presentation was made by Mrs. Warfield,
wife of the President of the Board of Education.
Also, the following names should be added to the list in connection
with the River Forest appearance:
1) Mr. Irwin Reiger - 1021 Lathrop Avenue, River Forest - He is
President of the Village of River Forest and was on the plat-
form with Mrs. Reiger.
2) Mr. and Mrs. Walter B. Forbes - 755 Monroe Street, River
Forest - They were in charge of a small tea that was served
in the Roosevelt School library. Both the Vice President
and Mrs. Nixon stopped in for tea after the speech and spent
a few minutes in there with the distinguished guests. The
Forbes' should be thanked for having made the tea possible
or having set up the arrangements for same.
3) Jay Martin - 330 Forest Avenue, River Forest - President,
Roosevelt Jr. High School Student Council. The Vice Pres-
ident presented the new flag to Jay and he and Jay went to
the flagpole to turn it over to the Boy Scouts to be raised
on the flagpole. He was a very nice young fellow and the
Boss was quite impressed with him and should receive a warm
letter. He got a tremendous cheer from the students when he
was introduced and the Boss pointed out that with the enthus-
=
iasm of his constituents, he would undoubtedly be running for
Congress within a few years.
4) Mr. R. F. McCall - 738 William Street, River Forest - He is
the Committee chairman of Boy Scout troop 63 in River Forest.
This Scout troop had a detachment of scouts at the flagpole
at the school to raise the new flag which was presented by
the Vice President. The Boy Scouts in the group were: Bill
McCall, Edward Gerulat, Bill Ingram, and Arthur Willing. The
man in charge of the Scout detail was Mr. Arthur Willing, the
father of young Arthur. A letter should go to Mr. McCall as
Committee Chairman of the Scout troop, thanking the troop for
the sending of the detail over to handle the flag-raising and
I would think mentionig the names of the boys who were there and
that of Mr. Willing.

John Ehrlichman recommends H. Spencer Congrom, President of the
Young Republicans in Indiana State Teachers College in Terre Haute
as a possible worker at the Convention. He is planning to attend
the Convention anyway and John feels he would be a very good organ-
izer and available for whatever we might want him to do.
He is apparently extremely right-wing but is strongly pro-Nixon.
He can be contacted through the Indiana State Teachers College or
in care of John Church, County Republican Chairman, 728 Cherry
Street, Terre Haute, Indiana.

RE: NIXON VOLUNTEERS - INDIANA
John Ehrlichman advises that there is a very good prospect for
the Chairman of the Nixon Club in Terre Haute, Indiana by the name
of Mr. James Connover. He is the principal of the High School at
Terre Haute, a leader in service clubs and prominent in youth ac-
tivities. He is a Republican, but because the School Board is
Democratic, he only engages in non-partisan activities. He might,
however, take part in some non-partisen Nixon organization such as
the Volunteers. The County Chairman recommends him very highly.
John felt you should have his name because Terre Haute is a strong
Democratic area and is one in which a Nixon Club might be of con-
siderable value.

I have received a request from Henry Morris, in San
Francisco for Mr. Nixon to autograph the enclosed picture.
Mr. Morris was one of the three Guardsmen who escorted
Mr. Nixon to the Guardsmen's reception at the St. Francis.
He is also the District Manager of the Pacific Telephone
and Telegraph Company in San Francisco.
I'd appreciate your having the boss sign this and then

Noble Travis, Public Relations Director of Michigan Consolidated
Gas called Friday morning. H., as you will recall, is the fellow
who was in charge of the Wayne State University dinner in Detroit
when we were out there a while back. He is actively engaged at
the moment, in the Bentley senatorial campaign and has called me
a couple of times regarding some aspects of that.
The purpose of this call was to say that he was planning to be in
Washington on May 4 and 5 and again on June 6 through 8th. He
is most anxious to meet with the Vice President for a few minutes
while he is in town.
He feels that there is still considerable problem internally in
the Party in Michigan and that he, Travis, is accepted by both
sides, and therefore can be of continuing help in getting this
resolved. He also has some ideas on the approach on the Michigan
situation, and some suggestions regarding the campaign on the
local level that he feels he should discuss with the Vice Pres-
ident. He was in Washington last week for a few days with his
family and did not have an opportunity to check in with us but
did spend some time with Summerfield and says there are still
some problems in that area.
I merely told him I would pass his request along; it should be
acknowledged and I assume that Charlie or Finch should probably
talk with him while he is here. I see no reason for him to see
the Vice President.

Dear Alice:
I just wanted to thank you for sending in Charles Keats. I
enjoyed very much having a chat with him on Thursday morning.
I also suggested he talk with Herb Klein, the Vice President's
Press Secretary, and with John Warner in our office here who is
setting up a Speakers Bureau operation for Nixon Volunteers.
I think that Keats is undoubtedly a very able and savvy guy in
the political field and while I am not sure where or how we
might be able to use his services, I did very much appreciate
your bringing him to our attention and I will keep you posted
as to further developments.

RE: Buffalo-Auburn-Syraouse trip
May I point out a few things in regard to this trip:
The actual event takes place in two weeks.
None of the stops - Buffalo, Auburn or Syracuse have been advanced.
There has been considerable discussion with Buffalo people about
various events and they have not been told that there has been a
curtailment in the time to be spent or activity in Buffalo.
In each of the areas I am afraid the local people are going shead
with planning that does not coincide with what we want them to
do.
Unless I can advance all 3 areas this week which means having
decisions by Tuesday on the various stops there is not going to
be enough time to properly organize so the crowds, etc., are at
least satisfactory. The biggest problem in all of these trips
this year has been that the local people have felt very much
hampered because of the lack of time they have for local planning
after the decisions are made as to what the schedule will be in
their area.
In my opinion, at least, New York is too important and too sensitive
to allow this situation to develop. This is especially true in the
areas where we are going this time which are of course, strongholds.
I feel it would be very unwise to make any further contact or do any
advancing in these areas until we do have a clear decision on what
we will and won't do. The area of confusion is already great enough.
I hope, therefore, that you will be able to work out an approval or
revision of the current schedule with the Boss not later than mid-
day Tuesday so that we can get this underway.

Dear Tom:
I am sorry to bother you with this but would greatly
appreciate it if you would fill out completely the
attached Security Investigation Data questionnaire.
It is not necessary to prepare it in quadruplicate.
A single copy will suffice. It is important, however,
that you fill it out completely.
I realize this is a horrible chore but as you can
understand, the need for it is important.
Thank you very much and best regards.
Sincerely,
H. R. Haldeman

RE:New York Schedule
The attached preliminary schedule revision #2 incorporates
our latest discussions.
There are several points which should be noted:
1) I have discussed the Syracuse Press Club breakfast with
Casey Jones and Herb Klein and both agree it would work
out and be a good thing. It would be set up with a guest
list to include business, laber and civic leaders in addi-
tion to the members of the Press Club. They would expect
a Q & A by the members of the Press Club from the floor
after breakfast was served.
2) You will note there is an hour reserved for staff work from
10:00 to 11:00. This is to delay any departure from Syra-
cuse so the arrival time in Buffalowill coincide with a
lunch hour when we can expect a maximum crowd at the airport.
This time, therefore, is available for use in Syracuse if
desired.
3) The 12:15 Buffalo arrival time will have to be checked.
It may be we should get in a little earlier or a little
later than that. I will confirm this when I advance this
later this week.
4) The time from 1:00 to 2:25 at the Hotel in Buffale, which
is now reserved for staff work, could be used for the taping
of a panel TV show if this is felt desireable or for a meet-
15g
ing with the newspaper publishers. Herb Klein has recommended
both of these activities. The local Buffalo group have rec-
comended a meeting with the publishers and would be agreeable to
the TV thing but have not pushed it.
5) The Party workers reception would be set for a group of about
250 Party leaders in the Erie County area and would be
scheduled for a room of that size. We would, of course,
work on including people from other areas too, so as to
thake a major demonstration of Party backing. I think the
time allowed for this reception is ample but since there
are 2-1/2 hours reserved for staff work afterwards, it
would work out all right if it did run over.
- 2 -
6) The W.S.E. reception arrival time is set for 6:30 because
there will be about 250 people at this reception. The bulk
of them will leave for the dinner, presumably at 7:00 when
it starts, leaving only the head table group to gather,
and they will enter the dinner at 7:15. I think we should
allow this much time for the reception but it can, of course,
be out shorter.
7) I have discussed the above rough outline with Walter Mahoney
and he is in agreement that the activities in Buffalo can
well be held to a Party workers reception and a large airport
greeting. He especially agrees that the parochial school
stop should be dropped and is not pushing for inclusion of
any of the other meetings which he had originally recomended.
8) All of the above times and specifies will have to be confirmed
during an advance this week but I think that on a rough basis,
they will work out just about right.
P.S. I just talked with Congressan Richlman and he is in full
accord with the plan for the Press Club breakfast and also assures
me that they will turn out a good crowd at the airport the afternoon
before. He thinks the overall plan sounds fine.
