As you perfectly well know, the credit goes to the group who were out in Indiana doing the work...not to me. Also, thanks a million for the print of the Winter Olympic film. Please let me know how much I owe you for same. I am looking forward to seeing the financial pages. Travel plans are still pretty limited as you probably have read. As the pace steps up, we will be getting in touch with you, though, because I hope there will be an opportunity for you to make another trip before the Convention. Best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRH:cfo 5/11/60 H.R.H. c/s May 11, 1960 TO: Robert G. McCune FROM: H. R. Haldeman Will you please send out immediately by Airmail, Special Delivery, a 24" X 36" black and white photograph of the Vice President to be used at the Taber Testimonial Dinner in Auburn, New York. This should be sent to: Mr. Robert White Taber & White Auburn, New York Also, will you have sent to Mr. White, a glessy reproduction of the Vice President's seal that they can use as artwork for the dinner program. If we don't have a print of this, we should get one, from Don Hughes, I guess. These should go out as quickly as possible, since the dinner is only a little over a week away. They want a black and white picture of RN in the 24" X 36" size to match a picture of Taber which they are using for the dinner. 5/11/60 H.R.H. c/s May 11, 1960 Mr. Stewart Bailey Wershub 1136 Fifth Avenue New York 28, New York Dear Mr. Wershub: Thank you very much for your letter of April 26 in which you indicate your belief in the leadership ability of Mr. Nixon and your desire to take an active interest in the Presidential campaign this summer and fall. Since I am not sure from your letter what the nature of your intended participation might be, I am assuming that your interest would be in working in the New York area. On this assumption, I am therefore, by carbon of this letter, informing Mr. George Vetter, Chairman of the New Yorkers for Nixon, of your interest. I am sure you will be hearing directly from Mr. Vetter who should find your advertising experience and your interest in Mr. Nixon of great value to him in his work. New Yorkers for Nixon, as you might know, was formed last year as a volunteer group actively dedicated to the Nixon cause. I think you will find their work to be very worth- while and stimulating and trust that you will be able to participate with them in their endeavors. Thank you very much for your thoughtfulness in writing, and keep up the good work. Best regards.= Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRH:efo 00; George Vetter New Yorkers for Nixon 63 East 41st Street New York 17, New York 5/x1/60 H.R.H. c/ S May 11, 1960 TO: Advance Men FROM: H. R. Haldeman DRAFT RE: Police escorts for motorcades There have been some questions about the methods and principles involved in requesting police escorts for the Vice President's motorcades. The important thing in this connection is to keep in mind the purpose of an escort when one is used. This is, of course, to insure that the entire motorcade, of whatever number of cars it consists, start, continue and arrive at the destination together. In discussing escort plans with the Secret Service field offices or with the police, it should be emphasized that the function of the escort is not to provide a body guard for the Vice President or a Guard of Honor for the Vice President. Keeping these points in mind, it becomes obvious that the number of motorcycles or vehicles required to escort the motorcade will depend on the length of the motorcade and number of care in same. It will not require a large number of motorcycles at the front of the motercade or surrounding the Vice President's cars. There should, in most cases, be a lead car out in front usually a marked police car. There should also be a follow-up car after the last official car in the motorcade, and this too, should probably in most cases, be a marked police car. These two ve- hicles should be able to maintain radio contact with each other so the motorcade can be held intact. If motorcycles are needed in addition to the lead and follow-up cars, they should operate on a push basis rather than leap-frogging. In other words, the first motorcyclex arrives at an intersection just as the motorcade does and holds the traffic at the inter- section while the motorcade proceeds through. The second motor- cycle will be running about even with the third or fourth car in the motorcade and as it comes in to the intersection, the first motorcycle does on shead to the next intersection. The second one stays there until the next motorcycle arrives about even with the sixth or seventh car and then goes on shead, and so on. Thus there is no great confusion of motorcycles roaring back and forth nor is there any need for extensive use of sirens or other sound devices. The most important thing, however, is to emphasise that the real problem is getting the last car in the motorcade to the - 2 - destination along with the rest of the cars. Taxis Emphasis should not be placed on the Vice President's car solely. Most of the troubles we have had with escorts in the past, have been due to a lack of understanding of this basic principle. May 12, 1960 Mr. Vern Sanford General Manager Texas Press Association 1716 San Antonio Street Austin 1, Texas Dear Mr. Sanford: Mr. Haldeman is out of town until next Monday, but as soon as he returns, I shall bring your letter of May 11 to his attention. In the meantime, I am enclosing with this letter, glossies of the Vice President and Mrs. Nixon for your use. Sincerely yours, (Miss) Christine O'Polka Secretary to H. R. Haldeman HRH:cfo Enclosures May 13, 1960 Reporter Magazine 600 Madison Avenue New York 21, New York Attention: Subscription Department Gentlemen: Reference is made to my letter of April 28th concerning my subscription to your magaine. I am not receiving copies of The Reporter but received the enclosed card in the mail the other day. Would you please change the address as shown on the card, to the one above. Also, please as advise, as requested in the April 28th letter, if my sub- scription is still in effect. The address as given in that letter was in error. Sincerely yours, H. R. Haldeman HRH:cfo Enclosure 5/16/60 H.R.H. c/s May 16, 1960 Mr. Cy Laughter Laughter Corporation 319 Leo Street Dayton 1, Ohio AIR MAIL Dear Cy: Thank you very much for sending on the two handkerchiefs. I didn't realize you were a seamstress, but you did a lovely job on the elephants. As you can tell from the papers, we are still not doing a great deal of traveling, and plans for future trips are, of course, very limited at this point. I think that the Frimary results so far have been very gratifying... especially Indiana, and it looks as though things are moving along very well. Thank you very much again for sending the handkerchiefs, and best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRH:efo cc: Don Hughes: Don - What do I do now ?! 5/16/60 H.R.H. c/s May 16, 1960 TO: Loie Gaunt FROM: Bob Haldeman In the past, as you know, when we are in Chicago we have used Ed Power, a former S.S. agent, to handle arrangements for motorcades, etc. The local committeee has paid for his services, in most cases. In connection with the most recent trip, we are paying him. He has an arrangement with the Hertz Corporation in Chicago whereby they provide the cars for our motorcade, and as you know, Ed lines up drivers from the University of Chicago. I had always thought he rented the cars from Hertz and since the whole thing has always been handled by the local Committee, I had no reason to believe otherwise. I now discover that Hertz apparently donates the cars and does not charge us for them. I think, therefore, that we should probably get a letter of thanks off to the Hertz Corporation and I understand the proper contact would be Walter L. Jacobs, Presi- dent, The Hertz Corporation, 218 South Wabash Avenue, Chicago 4. Illinois. I guess he has supplied the cars for all of the trips where we have used Ed Powers' services since the '58 campaign. You may feel it's better not to write at this point, since we haven't on earlier trips, but perhaps we could do it on the basis of saying that Ed Power, who has handled our transportation arrangements in Chicago, has informed me of your cooperation in providing cars...or something like that. Whatever you think is best, will be fine. 5/16/60 H.R. H. c/s May 16, 1960 Mr. Karl G. Heinse 404 Stanton Avenue Terrace Park, Ohio Dear Mr. Heinze: Thank you very much for your letter regarding the article in Advertising Age. I am sure that your work in the field of public information could be of tremendous value to us in the forthcoming cam- paign. I am taking the liberty of sending your letter to Mr. Peter Flanigan, National Director of Nixon Volunteers. I think that his organization is the one with which you would be best affiliated since they are devoted to the establishment of Nixon for President Clubs in communities throughout the country. Your availability to travel on evenings and week- ends through the general areas of Southern Ohio and Northern Kentucky would, I think, make you of tremendous value to this organization. I am sure Pete Flanigan will want to send your name on to his Area Representative in your part of the country and I assume you will hear directly from him in the near future. I am very sorry you had no response to your letter to the Nixon Club at the Shoreham Building. The reason probably was that at the time you wrote, they were not actively looking for volunteer workers in other parts of the country, and apparently your offer of services was one which they could not take advantage of right at the time. You should, of course, have received a reply, and again, I am very sorry you did not. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRH:efo cc: P. M. Flanigan 5/16/60 H.R.H. c/s May 16, 1960 TO: P. M. Flanigan FROM: H. R. Haldeman I talked with Newt Stearns the other day on another matter and he advises the Northern California group are having a Nixon Strategy Conference in Sacramento on Saturday, May 21 for lunch in the afternoon. This will be a workshop session on campaign techniques and Nixon's stand on issues, etc. It will include both the Volunteer groups and Party people. I think it would be a good idea if you or one of your group planned to attend and possibly to tape-record the whole thing for future use. 5/20/60 H.R.H. c/s MELVIN, ILLINOIS May 27, 1960 Propesed Schedule - for RE Approval ? Haldeman I had a telephone call yesterday from Sem Krupnick and among other things he reported that the Susskind telecast had created all kinds of favomble reaction in St. Louis in spite of the fact that the show hasn't even run out there. Apparently a number of people have heard about it from their friends or contacts in New York or Washington and have been very much impressed. Sam himself had a phone call from a friend of his in New York who is the strongest anti-Nixon man he knows, according to Sam, who said he had called Krupnick just to apologize for some of the nasty comments he had made about Nixon. Sam says this guy is a veryknowledgable and savvy person and he, Krupnick was quite impressed with the fact that this guy had reacted so favorably to the telecast. Sam's other point was that he felt it was very important that some work be done on the Bela Kornitzer book which he thinks supplies the missing link in the material available on Nixon. He feels it should be syndicated and an all-out effort should be made to build sales and distribution of the book. This might be a project you want to turn over to Krupnick since I'm not sure what, in general, is being done on it at this point. He seems to have a great interest in getting something done. Also, as you obviously know, he is vitally concerned with the St. Louis trip and is having a meeting this afternoon for example, to start working on publicity for the Jewish Community Center part of the visit. I think we should get our plans for St. Louis laid out as soon as we can least in general so that we don't hold Krup- nick up any longer than is necessary. I think that any delay will be a problem as far as Sam is concerned. 5/20/60 H.R.H. c/s May 20, 1960 Mr. Robert Ogden R. J. Martin & Company Paulsen Building Spokane 1, Washington VIA AIR MAIL Dear Bob: I am sending you a copy of the instructions for Advance Men which I mentioned when we were out in Illinois and which I had forgotten to bring along with me. I will confirm next week, our plan for going on out to Illinois but I think we should generally plan on being in Chieago Thursday evening and going on down to the Motel for the night so we will be in Mejvyn first thing Friday morning. I will give you a call however. Looking forward to seeing you, and best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRH:efe Enclosure 5/20/60 H.R.H. c/s May 20, 1960 Mr. William A. Burnham, Jr. President Imperial Artists Corporation 630 Fifth Avenue New York, New York Dear Bill: I received the record player in excellent condition and greatly appreciate your taking care of ordering it for me. I have not received the bill, however, and trust you will send that on. We have been discussing the Voices for Nimon proposal and I hope to be able to get back to you with some definite information very shortly. I c ompletely agree with you that the Boss did very well for himself on "Open End" the other night. The response has been terrific and 100% favorable. I am looking forward to seeing you before too long, and thanks again very much for taking care of the record player. Best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRH:cfo 5/24/60 H. R. H. C / S May 24, 1960 Mr. Lemuel R. Boulware 1115 Fifth Avenue New York, New York Dear Mr. Boulware: I greatly appreciated your taking the time to write on May 9th and want to assure you that I am the Bob Haldeman you assumed I was. I was very much interested in your enclosed copy of your talk in Lincoln, Nebraska and I certainly agree that we are up against a real problem in the coming election. As you undoubtedly know, the Vice President has been making the same point in his chats with business leaders and is very much aware of the situation. I had not seen the U. S. Chamber booklet on "InfIation, Unions and Wage Policy" which you sent on, and agree with you that the first part of that book also provides strong evidence of the problem we are facing. I am sorry that I missed your phone call last week and hope that when you return from your present trip that it will be possible to chat with you. Again, thank you very much for sending the materi al and for your support. Very best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRH:cfo 5/24/60 H.R.H. c/s May 24, 1960 TO: Len Hall FROM: H. R. Haldeman Thank you for your note regarding the interest on the part of Ned Cushing in having the Young Republicans be of assis- tance on the various RN visits, I will establish and maintain contact with Tom Van Sielen at National Headquarters and keep him posted on our itinerary and schedule so that we can have YR cooperation on each of these trips. I think this is an excellent idea and it should be of considerable value in promoting enthusiasm and crowds. Thank you very much. May 24, 1960 Mr. Charles Farrington Central Towers Building 2727 North Central Avenue Phoenix, Arizona Dear Charlie: VIA AIR MAIL I am sorry to bother you with this, but would greatly appreciate it if you would fill out completely the attached Security Investigation Data questionnaire. It is not necessary to prepare it in quadruplicate. A single copy will suffice. It is important, however, that you fill it out completely. Thank you very much and best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HTH:cfo Attachment 5/24/60 H.R.H. c/s May 24, 1960 TO: Don Hughes; CC: Bob Finch FROM: H. R. Haldeman RE: Noble Travis As I wrote you earlier, Noble Travis, the Public Relations Director of Michigan Consolidated Gas, is coming to Washington again on June 6 and 7. You will recall he was here a while back and had requested an audience with the Vice President at that time or on this trip. My recommendation is still that he not see the Vice President. I would suggest that it would be a good idea for either MeWhorter or McCaffrey to give him some time, however. I will ask Travis to write you requesting time with the Vice President and you can send him the standard form referring him to MeWhorter or McCaffrey, if you will, please. I have mentioned this to McWhorter and to McCaffrey so which- ever of them ends up with him has a brief background on the situation but Charlie suggested it would be a good idea to have something in writing on the request. May 24, 1960 TO: Bob Finch FROM: H. R. Haldeman RE: Peter Lint, Jr. I am enclosing the material from Peter Lint which we discussed yesterdyy and which lists the number of names in California which you thought you might want to contact in connection with the Primary. 5/24/60 HR. H. C S May 24, 1960 Mr. Peter Lint, Jr. P. 0. Box 1318 Grand Central Station New York 17, New York Dear Mr. Lint: Pat Gorman of the Disk Nixon Club has told me of your wonderful interest in seeing that Dick Nixon becomes the next President of the United States. Needless to say, we share this feeling with you. We were very much interested in the list of names which you sent along as potential members of the Dick Nixon Club and I am sure that Pat Gorman and his group will follow through on them. I would like very much to shat with you briefly about the campaign and the possibility of your providing additional names for us. Unfortunately, I have only your Post Office Box Number. If it is at all possible, I would very much appreciate your giving me a call at your earliest conven- ience so that we might chat briefly over the phone and possibly arrange an opportunity to get together. You can reach me during the day in Washington at EXecutive 3-7640. Please feel free to call collect. I am looking forward to talking with you. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRHtefe 5/24/60 H. R. H. C / S May 24, 1960 Mr. Doug Wheeler 329 Dunham Dorm Hamilton College Clinton, New York Dear Doug: Thank you very much for your recent letter. You are right in assuming that my lack of correspondence has been due to the fact that I've been out running around the country. I'm afraid I can't give you much constructive hope as far as plans for the Convention are concerned. It looks at this point as though we will be taking a very small staff to the Convention and it will be limited to those of our permanent staff who can perform an actual function during the Convention. I am not sure at this point whether there is going to be anything that you could do here in Washington or in any of our other Headquarters during the summer period. The problem, as you recognize, is the one of trying to bring you in for just a short period of time during the summer and having you return to school just as the campaign really gets underway. I would suggest, however, that you continue to keep in touch from time to time, and I assure you that if, as and when anything comes up I will let you know. I enjoyed very much the letter you enclosed with your letter. Your pal obviously has quite a sense of humor. Give my best to your dad. Sincerely, H.R. Haldeman HRH:efe 5/24/60 H. R. H. C / S May 24, 1960 TO: Loie Gaunt FROM: Bob Haldeman RE: New York Trip - Names I'm not sure how many of the following names Don may have already given you or which might have been covered on lists which have come in directly from the cities concerned but I'll cover them here just in case: 1) Kevin Cox Republican Party County Headquarters Ellicott Square Building, Buffalo, New York He is Executive Secretary of the County Committee and handled all the details on the over-all arrangements for Buffalo, including the preparing of the list of names which is supposed to be coming directly to you. I assume the name list will in- clude Senator Cooke who is the County Chairman and was in over- all charge. 2) Edward P. Mattar P. O. Box 186, Niagara Square Station Buffalo, 2, New York He should be thanked for his part in organizing the College group from the University of Buffalo who came out to greet the Vice President at the Airport. The letter should say that the Vice President was sorry his schedule did not permit him to visit the campus while he was there which Mattar had re- quested that he do. 3) Richard Sullivan 401 Plymouth Drive, Syracuse, New York He should be thanked for organizing the group at Syracuse University who came out to greet the Vice President at the Airport. 4) William Petty, Mgr. Auburn Inn, Auburn, New York He should be thanked for the courtesy of the use of his Hotel facilities. I assume the name Everett Dungey will be on Bob White's list of names which he is sending you as well as White's name too in connection with the Taber Dinner. - 2 - I assume that Hughes gave you the name of Alexander Jones who was the one who put together the breakfast in Syracuse. The host at the breakfast was Stephen Rogers who is the publisher of the Syracuse Herald-Journal. The manager of the Statler Hotel in Buffalo is Mr. Thurston and the manager of the Hotel Syracuse is Mr. Wilder, in case you don't already have those names. The letter for the A.M.E. Zion thing should go to Bishop Walls. I have no address on him nor no file on him, but I think that Hughes does, if you don't already have it. Several of Pete Flanigants Nixon Volunteer guys worked on getting groups out to the Airport. I think it would probably be a good idea to send letters to them. As a matter of fact, Ray Blair at Syracuse was included in the list that the Party people are sending you. The fellow in Buffalo is Dick Michaels and he actually is in over-all charge of both Syracuse and Buffalo for this Volunteer operation and Blair worked under him in Syracuse. Dick Michaels' address is 266 Pearl Street, Buffalo, New York. His full name is Richard W. Michaels. 5/25/60 H. R. Haldeman\nDRAFT\nRE: Police escorts for motorcades\nThere have been some questions about the methods and principles\ninvolved in requesting police escorts for the Vice President's\nmotorcades.\nThe important thing in this connection is to keep in mind the\npurpose of an escort when one is used. This is, of course, to\ninsure that the entire motorcade, of whatever number of cars it\nconsists, start, continue and arrive at the destination together.\nIn discussing escort plans with the Secret Service field offices\nor with the police, it should be emphasized that the function of\nthe escort is not to provide a body guard for the Vice President\nor a Guard of Honor for the Vice President.\nKeeping these points in mind, it becomes obvious that the number\nof motorcycles or vehicles required to escort the motorcade will\ndepend on the length of the motorcade and number of care in same.\nIt will not require a large number of motorcycles at the front of\nthe motercade or surrounding the Vice President's cars. There\nshould, in most cases, be a lead car out in front usually a\nmarked police car. There should also be a follow-up car after\nthe last official car in the motorcade, and this too, should\nprobably in most cases, be a marked police car. These two ve-\nhicles should be able to maintain radio contact with each other\nso the motorcade can be held intact.\nIf motorcycles are needed in addition to the lead and follow-up\ncars, they should operate on a push basis rather than leap-frogging.\nIn other words, the first motorcyclex arrives at an intersection\njust as the motorcade does and holds the traffic at the inter-\nsection while the motorcade proceeds through. The second motor-\ncycle will be running about even with the third or fourth car in\nthe motorcade and as it comes in to the intersection, the first\nmotorcycle does on shead to the next intersection. The second\none stays there until the next motorcycle arrives about even with\nthe sixth or seventh car and then goes on shead, and so on.\nThus there is no great confusion of motorcycles roaring back\nand forth nor is there any need for extensive use of sirens or\nother sound devices.\nThe most important thing, however, is to emphasise that the\nreal problem is getting the last car in the motorcade to the\n- 2 -\ndestination along with the rest of the cars. Taxis Emphasis\nshould not be placed on the Vice President's car solely. Most\nof the troubles we have had with escorts in the past, have been\ndue to a lack of understanding of this basic principle.\nMay 12, 1960\nMr. Vern Sanford\nGeneral Manager\nTexas Press Association\n1716 San Antonio Street\nAustin 1, Texas\nDear Mr. Sanford:\nMr. Haldeman is out of town until next Monday, but as\nsoon as he returns, I shall bring your letter of May\n11 to his attention.\nIn the meantime, I am enclosing with this letter, glossies\nof the Vice President and Mrs. Nixon for your use.\nSincerely yours,\n(Miss) Christine O'Polka\nSecretary to H. I think that\nthe Frimary results so far have been very gratifying...\nespecially Indiana, and it looks as though things are\nmoving along very well.\nThank you very much again for sending the handkerchiefs,\nand best regards.\nSincerely,\nH. R. I now discover that Hertz apparently donates\nthe cars and does not charge us for them. I think, therefore, that\nwe should probably get a letter of thanks off to the Hertz Corporation\nand I understand the proper contact would be Walter L. Jacobs, Presi-\ndent, The Hertz Corporation, 218 South Wabash Avenue, Chicago 4. Illinois.\nI guess he has supplied the cars for all of the trips where we have used\nEd Powers' services since the '58 campaign.\nYou may feel it's better not to write at this point, since we haven't\non earlier trips, but perhaps we could do it on the basis of saying\nthat Ed Power, who has handled our transportation arrangements in\nChicago, has informed me of your cooperation in providing cars...or\nsomething like that.\nWhatever you think is best, will be fine.\n5/16/60\nH.R. Heinse\n404 Stanton Avenue\nTerrace Park, Ohio\nDear Mr. Heinze:\nThank you very much for your letter regarding the article\nin Advertising Age.\nI am sure that your work in the field of public information\ncould be of tremendous value to us in the forthcoming cam-\npaign.\nI am taking the liberty of sending your letter to Mr. Peter\nFlanigan, National Director of Nixon Volunteers. I think\nthat his organization is the one with which you would be\nbest affiliated since they are devoted to the establishment\nof Nixon for President Clubs in communities throughout the\ncountry. Your availability to travel on evenings and week-\nends through the general areas of Southern Ohio and Northern\nKentucky would, I think, make you of tremendous value to this\norganization.\nI am sure Pete Flanigan will want to send your name on to\nhis Area Representative in your part of the country and I\nassume you will hear directly from him in the near future.\nI am very sorry you had no response to your letter to the\nNixon Club at the Shoreham Building. The reason probably\nwas that at the time you wrote, they were not actively\nlooking for volunteer workers in other parts of the country,\nand apparently your offer of services was one which they\ncould not take advantage of right at the time. You should,\nof course, have received a reply, and again, I am very sorry\nyou did not.\nSincerely,\nH. R. Haldeman\nHRH:efo\ncc: P. M. Flanigan\n5/16/60\nH.R.H.\nc/s\nMay 16, 1960\nTO: P. M. Haldeman\nI had a telephone call yesterday from Sem Krupnick and among other\nthings he reported that the Susskind telecast had created all kinds\nof favomble reaction in St. Louis in spite of the fact that the show\nhasn't even run out there. Apparently a number of people have heard\nabout it from their friends or contacts in New York or Washington and\nhave been very much impressed.\nSam himself had a phone call from a friend of his in New York who is\nthe strongest anti-Nixon man he knows, according to Sam, who said he\nhad called Krupnick just to apologize for some of the nasty comments\nhe had made about Nixon. Sam says this guy is a veryknowledgable and\nsavvy person and he, Krupnick was quite impressed with the fact that\nthis guy had reacted so favorably to the telecast.\nSam's other point was that he felt it was very important that some\nwork be done on the Bela Kornitzer book which he thinks supplies the\nmissing link in the material available on Nixon. He feels it should\nbe syndicated and an all-out effort should be made to build sales and\ndistribution of the book. This might be a project you want to turn\nover to Krupnick since I'm not sure what, in general, is being done\non it at this point. He seems to have a great interest in getting\nsomething done.\nAlso, as you obviously know, he is vitally concerned with the St.\nLouis trip and is having a meeting this afternoon for example, to\nstart working on publicity for the Jewish Community Center part of\nthe visit. I think we should get our plans for St. Louis laid out\nas soon as we can least in general so that we don't hold Krup-\nnick up any longer than is necessary. I think that any delay will\nbe a problem as far as Sam is concerned.\n5/20/60\nH.R.H.\nc/s\nMay 20, 1960\nMr. Robert Ogden\nR. J. Martin & Company\nPaulsen Building\nSpokane 1, Washington\nVIA AIR MAIL\nDear Bob:\nI am sending you a copy of the instructions for Advance\nMen which I mentioned when we were out in Illinois and\nwhich I had forgotten to bring along with me.\nI will confirm next week, our plan for going on out to\nIllinois but I think we should generally plan on being\nin Chieago Thursday evening and going on down to the\nMotel for the night so we will be in Mejvyn first thing\nFriday morning. I will give you a call however.\nLooking forward to seeing you, and best regards.\nSincerely,\nH. R. Haldeman\nHRH:efe\nEnclosure\n5/20/60\nH.R.H.\nc/s\nMay 20, 1960\nMr. William A. Burnham, Jr.\nPresident\nImperial Artists Corporation\n630 Fifth Avenue\nNew York, New York\nDear Bill:\nI received the record player in excellent condition\nand greatly appreciate your taking care of ordering\nit for me.\nI have not received the bill, however, and trust you\nwill send that on.\nWe have been discussing the Voices for Nimon proposal\nand I hope to be able to get back to you with some\ndefinite information very shortly.\nI c ompletely agree with you that the Boss did very\nwell for himself on \"Open End\" the other night. The\nresponse has been terrific and 100% favorable.\nI am looking forward to seeing you before too long,\nand thanks again very much for taking care of the\nrecord player.\nBest regards.\nSincerely,\nH. Boulware\n1115 Fifth Avenue\nNew York, New York\nDear Mr. Boulware:\nI greatly appreciated your taking the time to write on\nMay 9th and want to assure you that I am the Bob Haldeman\nyou assumed I was.\nI was very much interested in your enclosed copy of your\ntalk in Lincoln, Nebraska and I certainly agree that we are\nup against a real problem in the coming election.\nAs you undoubtedly know, the Vice President has been making\nthe same point in his chats with business leaders and is\nvery much aware of the situation. I had not seen the U. S.\nChamber booklet on \"InfIation, Unions and Wage Policy\" which\nyou sent on, and agree with you that the first part of that\nbook also provides strong evidence of the problem we are\nfacing.\nI am sorry that I missed your phone call last week and hope\nthat when you return from your present trip that it will be\npossible to chat with you.\nAgain, thank you very much for sending the materi al and for\nyour support.\nVery best regards.\nSincerely,\nH. Haldeman\nThank you for your note regarding the interest on the part\nof Ned Cushing in having the Young Republicans be of assis-\ntance on the various RN visits,\nI will establish and maintain contact with Tom Van Sielen\nat National Headquarters and keep him posted on our itinerary\nand schedule so that we can have YR cooperation on each of\nthese trips. I think this is an excellent idea and it should\nbe of considerable value in promoting enthusiasm and crowds.\nThank you very much.\nMay 24, 1960\nMr. Charles Farrington\nCentral Towers Building\n2727 North Central Avenue\nPhoenix, Arizona\nDear Charlie:\nVIA AIR MAIL\nI am sorry to bother you with this, but would greatly\nappreciate it if you would fill out completely the\nattached Security Investigation Data questionnaire.\nIt is not necessary to prepare it in quadruplicate.\nA single copy will suffice. It is important, however,\nthat you fill it out completely.\nThank you very much and best regards.\nSincerely,\nH. R. Haldeman\nRE: Noble Travis\nAs I wrote you earlier, Noble Travis, the Public Relations\nDirector of Michigan Consolidated Gas, is coming to Washington\nagain on June 6 and 7. You will recall he was here a while\nback and had requested an audience with the Vice President\nat that time or on this trip.\nMy recommendation is still that he not see the Vice President.\nI would suggest that it would be a good idea for either MeWhorter\nor McCaffrey to give him some time, however.\nI will ask Travis to write you requesting time with the Vice\nPresident and you can send him the standard form referring\nhim to MeWhorter or McCaffrey, if you will, please.\nI have mentioned this to McWhorter and to McCaffrey so which-\never of them ends up with him has a brief background on the\nsituation but Charlie suggested it would be a good idea to\nhave something in writing on the request.\nMay 24, 1960\nTO: Bob Finch\nFROM: H. R. Haldeman\nRE: Peter Lint, Jr.\nI am enclosing the material from Peter Lint which we\ndiscussed yesterdyy and which lists the number of names\nin California which you thought you might want to contact\nin connection with the Primary.\n5/24/60\nHR. H.\nC\nS\nMay 24, 1960\nMr. Peter Lint, Jr.\nP. 0. Box 1318\nGrand Central Station\nNew York 17, New York\nDear Mr. Lint:\nPat Gorman of the Disk Nixon Club has told me of your\nwonderful interest in seeing that Dick Nixon becomes the\nnext President of the United States. Needless to say, we\nshare this feeling with you.\nWe were very much interested in the list of names which\nyou sent along as potential members of the Dick Nixon Club\nand I am sure that Pat Gorman and his group will follow\nthrough on them.\nI would like very much to shat with you briefly about the\ncampaign and the possibility of your providing additional\nnames for us. Unfortunately, I have only your Post Office\nBox Number. If it is at all possible, I would very much\nappreciate your giving me a call at your earliest conven-\nience so that we might chat briefly over the phone and\npossibly arrange an opportunity to get together.\nYou can reach me during the day in Washington at EXecutive\n3-7640. Please feel free to call collect. I am looking\nforward to talking with you.\nSincerely,\nH. R. Haldeman\nHRHtefe\n5/24/60\nH. R. H.\nC / S\nMay 24, 1960\nMr. Doug Wheeler\n329 Dunham Dorm\nHamilton College\nClinton, New York\nDear Doug:\nThank you very much for your recent letter. You are\nright in assuming that my lack of correspondence has\nbeen due to the fact that I've been out running around\nthe country.\nI'm afraid I can't give you much constructive hope as\nfar as plans for the Convention are concerned. It looks\nat this point as though we will be taking a very small\nstaff to the Convention and it will be limited to those\nof our permanent staff who can perform an actual function\nduring the Convention.\nI am not sure at this point whether there is going to be\nanything that you could do here in Washington or in any\nof our other Headquarters during the summer period. The\nproblem, as you recognize, is the one of trying to bring\nyou in for just a short period of time during the summer\nand having you return to school just as the campaign\nreally gets underway.\nI would suggest, however, that you continue to keep in\ntouch from time to time, and I assure you that if, as\nand when anything comes up I will let you know.\nI enjoyed very much the letter you enclosed with your\nletter. Your pal obviously has quite a sense of humor.\nGive my best to your dad.\nSincerely,\nH.R. Haldeman\nHRH:efe\n5/24/60\nH. R. H.\nC / S\nMay 24, 1960\nTO: Loie Gaunt\nFROM: Bob Haldeman\nRE: New York Trip - Names\nI'm not sure how many of the following names Don may have already\ngiven you or which might have been covered on lists which have\ncome in directly from the cities concerned but I'll cover them\nhere just in case:\n1) Kevin Cox\nRepublican Party County Headquarters\nEllicott Square Building, Buffalo, New York\nHe is Executive Secretary of the County Committee and\nhandled all the details on the over-all arrangements for Buffalo,\nincluding the preparing of the list of names which is supposed\nto be coming directly to you. I assume the name list will in-\nclude Senator Cooke who is the County Chairman and was in over-\nall charge.\n2) Edward P. Mattar\nP. O. Box 186, Niagara Square Station\nBuffalo, 2, New York\nHe should be thanked for his part in organizing the\nCollege group from the University of Buffalo who came out to\ngreet the Vice President at the Airport. The letter should\nsay that the Vice President was sorry his schedule did not permit\nhim to visit the campus while he was there which Mattar had re-\nquested that he do.\n3) Richard Sullivan\n401 Plymouth Drive,\nSyracuse, New York\nHe should be thanked for organizing the group at Syracuse\nUniversity who came out to greet the Vice President at the\nAirport.\n4) William Petty, Mgr.\nAuburn Inn,\nAuburn, New York\nHe should be thanked for the courtesy of the use of his\nHotel facilities. I assume the name Everett Dungey will be on\nBob White's list of names which he is sending you as well as\nWhite's name too in connection with the Taber Dinner.\n- 2 -\nI assume that Hughes gave you the name of Alexander Jones who was\nthe one who put together the breakfast in Syracuse. The host at\nthe breakfast was Stephen Rogers who is the publisher of the Syracuse\nHerald-Journal.\nThe manager of the Statler Hotel in Buffalo is Mr. Thurston and the\nmanager of the Hotel Syracuse is Mr. Wilder, in case you don't already\nhave those names.\nThe letter for the A.M.E. Zion thing should go to Bishop Walls. I\nhave no address on him nor no file on him, but I think that Hughes\ndoes, if you don't already have it.\nSeveral of Pete Flanigants Nixon Volunteer guys worked on getting\ngroups out to the Airport. I think it would probably be a good\nidea to send letters to them. As a matter of fact, Ray Blair at\nSyracuse was included in the list that the Party people are sending\nyou. The fellow in Buffalo is Dick Michaels and he actually is in\nover-all charge of both Syracuse and Buffalo for this Volunteer\noperation and Blair worked under him in Syracuse.\nDick Michaels' address is 266 Pearl Street, Buffalo, New York. His\nfull name is Richard W. Michaels.\n5/25/60\nH. R.
