Monday, June 25, 2007 Page 5 of 5 June 23, 1960 Mr. James Bertron 6151 Holly Springs Houston, Texas Dear Jim: Just wanted to remind you that you had agreed that you would put down on paper, some of your thoughts regarding our arrangements and method of operation and send them on to me. I wanted you to know that I am looking forward to receiving same. Let me say again that we certainly appreciated the tremendous en- thusiasm and cooperation on everyone's part while we were in Houston and the time spent there will be long-remembered by all of us. Thanks again very much for your personal help. I hope that we will have an opportunity to get together under more relaxed circumstances in the future. Best regards. Sincerely yours, H. R. Haldeman HRH:cfo 6/23/60 H.R.H. C/S June 23, 1960 TO: Dean Borton FROM: Bob Haldeman Thad Hutcheson, State Chairman in Texas, advises me that the materials which we requested for the Texas State Convention in San Antonio didn't arrive until Tuesday night. They apparently were sent Air Express with a bill in excess of $500. If the stuff was actually shipped on Saturday, I can't understand why it would not have been delivered until Tuesday night. In any event, it arrived too late to do any good at the Convention and we, of course, created a great deal of ill will. first of all by the late arrival, and secondly and probably more important, by the unnecessary expen- diture of a tremendous amount of money. I would appreciate your checking on this and letting me know what happened and why. 6/23/60 H.R.H. C./S June 23, 1960 TO: Carol Dawson FROM: Bob Haldeman SUBJECT: PRINCETON While I was Advancing the Houston stop I had the opportunity to have dinner at the home of Thad Hutcheson, the Republican State Chairman for Texas. He has a son, Thad Jr., who is starting into his sophomore year at Princeton this fall. Young Thad was apparently indrumental in forming a Republican Club at Princeton last year when he was only a freshman and is very much interested in building some Republican activity at the University. As you probably know, we're not in very good shape at Princeton and the faculty, of course, is solidly against us. After some discussion with Thad, I agreed with him that it would be wiser not and try and develop a Nixon Club activity at this stage, since the Republican Club was just getting started. I think that our efforts would be better spent in trying to solidify and strengthen the Republican Club activity at thi S point. They, of course, will be for Nixon anyway. I told Thad I would mention his son to you and that we would certainly do everything we could to try and provide speakers, materials and any other help that we might be able to offer him when school opens again in the Fall. Thad's address is: 123 Joline, Princeton, New Jersey. I have talked with several other Princeton students at various times and I have the distinct impression that this University is well covered by Democratic speakers but that there are never any decent Republican speakers appearing there. I think anything we can do to help Thad early in the school year, to get one or maybe two top-flight Republican speakers in there, would be very worthwhile. June 23, 1960 H. R. H. C C / S June 23, 1960 Mr. Charles Farrington Jr. 512 East Third Street Scottsdale, Arizona Dear Charlie : I too, was disappointed that it didn't work out to provide assign- ments for the Advance Men group at the Convention, but I am sure you understand the situation. It is, of course, important that we keep the Convention open and free and we don't want to start moving in a huge Nixon operation at this point. Also, most of the activities and arrangements are in the hands of the National Committee and the various Convention committees. Since I have not heard from you regarding Hotel accommodations and since I have been unable to reach you on the phone, I assume you are not planning to come. If this should change, please let me know as quickly as possible. I have passed your information regarding your father's interest in making one of the seconding speeches on to Bob Finch and Len Hall and I assume that you or your father will hear from them in due course. As you know, this is completely out of my area, and I have no idea what the plans are for the seconding speeches, and of course, I have nothing to do with any decisions in this regard. It seems to me you are doing a good job of personal Advance Work in managing to get yourself some operation in Los Angeles during the summertime so as to avoid the Arizona heat. I will be in touch with you as soon as further plans develop. In the meantime, best regards. Sincerely yours, H. R. Haldeman HRH:cfo 6/23/60 H.RH. C / S June 23, 1960 TO: Len Hall, Bob Finch FROM: Bob Haldeman SUBJECT: CONVENTION SECONDING SPEECHES I have had a letter from Charles Farrington Jr., who, as you know, will probably be working with us as an Advance Man during the campaign. Charlie says that his father, who will be a delegate from Arizona, has a fervent desire to give one of the seconding speeches for the Vice President. Charlie realizes that this is probably an unrealistic desire, but he points out that it might be worth- while having an Arizona delegate affirm the Arizona state's basic sentiments for Nixon by seconding the Vice President. especially in view of the Goldwater sit- uation. Charlie says his father is acquainted with the Vice President and with Len Hall, Charlie Halleck and others who will be running the convention. He also points out that his father was elected as a delegate over the strenuous opposition of some who considered his pro-Nixon attitude treasonous in the wake of the local stampede to Barry Goldwater. Charlie says, however, that his father is simply a realist that believes that Nixon will make the best president, while Goldwater makes the best Senator. I, of course, have no knowledge of what the plans are in this regard and am merely passing this along as information. I do think it would be a good idea if one of you would drop Charlie a note when you have the opportunity. 6/23/60 H.R.H. C/S June 23, 1960 Mr. Warren Brock Brock Ranches El Centro, California Dear Warren: I can only assume that the huge crate of fabulous cantelope which appeared unannounced at The Alban Towers the other day, was from you. The reason for the shrewdness of this deduction can be traced to the label on the crate which identified the contents as "Brock Brand Imperial Valley Melons". Needless to say, Jack and Pete and I will greatly enjoy the cantelope and as you may have heard, the three of us have set up light housekeeping of sorts at least for breakfast so the melons are especially appreciated. Things seem to be progressing pretty well here at this point. The campaign organization is slowly shaping up and I think that eventually we may be ready to go. As you probably read in the papers, Dick had an exceptionally successful trip over this last weekend covering Houston, Sioux Falls, Fargo, Williston, Minot and St. Louis. You probably read the text of the farm speech in Minot. I trust it met with your approval. The reception seemed to be very good. in spite of the fact that the Press had built up a great deal of concern about the Nixon appearance in Minot. We had a tremendous crowd and they were very enthusiastic. The crowds all along the way at all stops were much bigger than we had ex- pected or hoped for, and also much more enthusiastic. You can't help but feel after a trip like this that there is really a definite building up of interest in our candidate and that as he continues to campaign and appear beforethe people, they will gradually realize that he is the obvious and only choice for the job. I am shipping Jo and the kids off to California next Monday to spend the summer and certainly hope I will be able to maneuver a trip or two out there between now and Labor Day. Mr. Warren Brock - 2 - June 23, 1960 I am looking forward to seeing you in Chicago in July, although I am not sure it will be much of an improvement in terms of climate over Imperial Valley. even at that time of year. Again, thank you very much for your thoughtfulness in sending the melons, if indeed it was you who did so. If you didn't, you might as well take the credit, since there was no card so I can't trace them to anyone else. The very best to all the Brock clan. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRH:cfo 6/23/60 H.R.H. C/ S June 23, 1960 Mr. W. R. Beaumier Lufkin Publishing Company P. O. Box 119 Lufkin, Texas Dear Mr. Beaumier: I am certainly sorry that I didn't get a chance to answer your letter prior to my return to Houston. I am sure we will both agree that the Texas Press Association ban quet was a great success. I did want you to know how much I appreciated your sending me tear sheets from your paper, and I am certainly in complete agreement with you and Bill Bogart on the views expressed in your edit- orials. I very much enjoyed meeting you, even though briefly, on both the recent visits to Houston and look forward to the opportunity of seeing you again under more relaxed circumstances at some point in the future. Again, thank you very much for your good wishes and for sending on the copies of the editorials. Best regards. Sincerely yours, H. R. As best I can determine at this point, we will both be arriving on July 23rd and staying until approximately the 31st. As we originally requested, we will need two twin-bedded rooms since both Mrs. Haldeman and Mrs. Ehrlichman will be accompanying us. Also, as you know, we would like to be located in some other part of the Hotel than that oc- cupied by the Vice President's immediate party. These two reservations are for our personal use and we will both be involved in staff activities for the Vice President so you may see our names appearing on some other room requirements in addition to the ones I have requested directly. This does not mean the other request will take care of our personal needs and therefore I want to be sure that you are holding the two rooms for us as we requested some months ago. Thanks very much for taking care of this. I will look forward to hearing regard- ing confirmation. I am certainly looking forward to seeing you and the rest of the Blackstone gang in a couple of weeks. Best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRH:cfo cc: John Ehrlichman 6/30/60 C / S June 30, 1960 Mr. Noble Travis Public Relations Director Michigan Consolidated Gas Company Detroit, Michigan Dear Nob: After our phone conversation yesterday I did some checking and found that Charlie McWhorter is in charge of all arrangements as far as the Vice President's own staff is concerned for the Convention. Charlie tells me that we are planning to have only a very small staff group and official party at the Convention and much as he would like to be able to put you to work, he does not have anything specific in mind that he can come up with at this time. I would suggest that you get in touch with your contacts in either the State organization or the National Committee and make your Conven- tion arrangements through them. As you can well imagine, any direct participation by the Vice President's staff is, of necessity, very much limited and there is not a lot we can do to take advantage of your offer. Thanks very much for contacting us, however, and please be sure to check in in Chicago. I will look forward to seeing you. Best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRH:efo cc: C. K. Graham 150 Broadway New York, New York Dear Chuck: I am sorry I missed your phone calls last week, but as you know, I've been out of town most of the time. I did receive your wire and was interested to learn you had accepted the post with Auchincloss. As the campaign organization is now set up, I have no re- sponsibility for any activity at this point other than the actual Nixon travels. As I told you when we talked some time ago, the areas of activity in which you might be most interested, are those under the direction of Pete Flanigan. Since appar- ently nothing has worked out there, I would strongly suggest you go ahead and plan to work with George Vetter in New York. Thanks very much for your interest and we will, of course, greatly value your help in the New York area which is going tobe of primary importance in the over-all ampaign results. Best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRH:cfo CC: P. M. Flanigan
