Monday, June 25, 2007 Page 4 of 4 CIS 8/11/60 August 11, 1960 Dear Harvey: Thanks very much for your note. I have recorded your Spring- field address and if we do end up in Springfield during the cam- paign, you can be sure we will be in touch with you. It was a real pleasure to have you with us during the Convention in Chicago and needless to say, we all appreciated the tremendous job you did in ironing out many of our problems. Thanks very much again, and best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRH:efo Mr. Harvey B. Stephens Apartment 108 5330 South Blackstone Avenue Chicago 15, Illinois C/ S 8-11-60 August 11, 1960 Dear Mr. Ziegler: Vice President Nixon has sent on to me, your letter of July 25 in which you suggest the use of your German Band to campaign with the Vice President in Wisconsin. At the present time, our campaign schedules are not set, as I am sure you understand but I think your suggestion is a very good one. I will be sure that the proper people are in touch with you as soon as we do have our plans firmed up for campaigning in Wisconsin. As to specific tunes, 1 would say that anything in your regular repertoire would be satisfactory, and I am sure that this can be left to your good judgment. Thank you very much for writing and for your interest in Vice President Nixon, which of course, we all share. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRH:cfo Mr. Elmer Ziegler, Bandmaster Madison City Band 114 State Street Madison, Wisconsin cc: MM :I guess inquiries like the offer of the band should be sent to me at least for the present. B/11/60 C/S August 11, 1960 Dear Leonard: I never did get the envelope from you while I was at the Blackstone in Chicago but somehow it caught back up with me in Washington and was waiting here when I returned from Hawaii this week. I played the record and think your song is terrific. I have taken the liberty of turning the music and the record over to Ted Rogers, who is handling the campaign song business and I know that he will be getting in touch with you. Thanks very much for your interest and sending the material along. I am sure that it will prove very valuable in the campaign ahead. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRH:cfo Mr. Leonard Keller 355 Lincoln Road Miami Beach, Florida MEMORANDUM August 11, 1960 TO: Ted Rogers FROM: Bob Haldeman Attached is a letter and sheet music and record from Leonard Keller who is one of the Co-Chairmen of the Miami Beach Republican Mens Club. He is a former band leader or something and his name is probably familiar to you, although it isn't to me. I think the song is good, and if you agree, I think we ought to try and do something with it or at least give him the goahead so he can do something with it. In any event, I assume some follow-up will be carried out. 8/11/60 C/S August 11, 1960 Dear Vern: Thanks very much for the additional elippings. I certainly appreciate your sending them on. I'm sorry not to have written you sconer but I went right from the Chicago Con- vention out to Hawaii and just returned. I was most interested in your foot-note regarding the im- provement of Nixon's chances in Texas. This is certainly good news and I would like to chat with you in the next few days to get a first-hand report on same. Again, thanks very much for your thoughtfulness, and best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRH:cfo Mr. Vern Sanford General Manager Texas Press Association 1716 San Antonio Street Austin 1, Texas C/S 8/11/60 August 11, 1960 Dear Jack: I assure you that my television appearances in Chicago were inadvertent and they were not the stepping stones for an acting career. I intend to return to advertising as quickly as possible. I can also assure you that the one named Nixon was the Presi- dential hopeful. not the other one. I did get a haircut but I got it in Chicago at the Hotel and I can assure you that their barbers don't know how to do a crewcut. Seriously, I greatly enjoyed hearing from you and congratulate you on your judgment in acquiring Judy Wolfson as a Secretary. I'll be back in L.A. some time after this thing is over and we can get together at that time, I trust. Best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRH:cfo Mr. Jack Douglas Jack Douglas Enterprises, Inc. 8833 Sunset Boulevard Hollywood 46, California August 11, 1960 Dear Judy: 1 did look through the house organ you sent me a few months ago and was very pleased to see that you were working for Jack Douglas. I agree with you that he's quite a guy and I can imagine you do enjoy the work. I was much more pleased to get your note clipped on to Jack's letter in which you indicated you were just as avid a Nixon supporter as you used to be a Thompson Tiger fan. There is a great deal you can do in the campaign, and I certainly hope that your offer of time and support is for real because it can be put to teriffic use. I would suggest that you call my mother who is the Southern California Vice Chairman of the Nixon campaign operation and who, 1 am sure, will be most happy to put you to work at whatever you want to do for whatever time you have available. You can reach her at CRestview 1-9709 and if you will explain who you are, tell her I had asked you to call I am sure she will be most happy to hear from you. Thanks very much for your note, and best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRH:efe Miss Judy Wolfson Jack Douglas Enterprises, Inc. 8833 Sunset Boulevard Hollywood 46, California CL S 8/11/60 August 11, 1960 Dear Joe: It was indeed a pleasant surprise to hear from you by way of the U.S. Mail when 1 returned from the Convention and the Hawaiian campaign. I completely agree with you on your idea of referring to Kennedy as the Junior Senator and we had talked about this type of thing already. I think your idea of covering it in every speech as many times as possible, is the best way to do it and we will work this through our Speakers Bureau. It should be very effective. As far as the Gilbert & Sullivan song is concerned, I am passing that on to greater minds than mine for their judgment. Personally, I think it's terrific and would love to have it properly recorded. I'll get back to you regarding the outcome on this. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman Mr. Joseph Leopold J. Walter Thompson Company 420 Lexington Avenue New York 17, New York ******** 8/11/69 C/S August 11, 1960 Dear Paull: Thanks very much for your letter regarding use of the private railroad car. It answers the question completely and I am sure we will turn elsewhere. Best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman Mr. J. Paull Marshall Assistant to the Vice President Association of American Railroads Transportation Building Washington 6. D. C. August 11, 1960 Dear Doug: Thanks very much for your letter of August 2. 1 am sorry to hear that you found my face in the crowd in the Convention, since I try to stay in the background as much as possible. I agree with you that the Acceptance Speech was great and I can assure you that the campaign will be even more vigorous. Definite plans for the campaign schedule have not yet been made and won't be for several waeks. I'm sure the Vice President will be making some appearances on Long Island during the campaign but at this point, I don't know exactly where or when. If we get there before you return to school, I'm sure there will be a way for you to help and I will be in touch with you to take advantage of your generous offer. At this point I can't tell you whether the Dinner with Dick idea would be possible or not, but I will make sure that it is included in the scheduling suggestions and considered at the proper time. Best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRH:efo Mr. Douglas Wheeler 10 Brandy Road Huntington, New York C/S 8/11/60 August 11, 1960 Dear Ed: Thank you very much for your letter of August 1 offering your services for the Nixon campaign. I am taking the liberty of sending your note on to George Vetter who is Chairman of the New Yorkers for Nixea. I assume your interest would be working in the New York area and this being the case, I know that George can put your services to good use. I hope we'll get a chance to get together after the campaign is over. I'm sorry we didn't see much of each other while we were both in New York. Thanks again very much for your offer of help. I assure you it will be most welcome. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRH:efo Mr. E. H. Concannon Young & Rubicam, Inc. 285 Madison Avenue New York 17, New York cc: George M. Vetter New Yorkers for Nixon P. S. George Vetter: Ed Concannon is a very good advertising man and I think he would be of considerable help to you even though he is a political novice. Istrongly urge you find some place to put him to work. CI/S 8/11/60 August 11, 1960 Dear Bob: Thanks very much for your note and the enclosed newspapers. I hate to even suggest such a thing, but would it be at all possible to get another complete file of the papers that you sent. I realise this is a terrible chore, but if you could do it without too much trouble, it would be greatly appreciated. Actually, all I need are the papers for the second, third and fourth. the ones prior to the visit, or the one copy we now have, will be sufficient. We, too, felt that the visit was most successful and were cer- tainly pleased with the tremendous crowd and enthusiasm which was generated. It was a fitting and exciting way to start off the campaign and I realise that your work was a great part in assur- ing its success. Thanks very much for all of your help. I will be back in touch with you a little later regarding possible participation in the campaign. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRH:efo Mr. Robert J. Sullivan Executive Dirdctor Convention & Visitors Bureau Reno Chamber of Commerce P.O. Box 2109 Reno, Nevada 8/11/60 C/S August 11, 1960 Dear Jim: Thank you very much for your nice note of August 3rd. Campaigning with Vice President Nixon is, indeed, a tremendous experience and opportunity and I can assure you that I am enjoying every minute of it. The Haldeman at the Beta House at S. C. when you were there was probably Tom Haldeman who was President of the chapter around that time, and he is my younger brother. Needless to say, we greatly appreciate your offer of ser- vices and I am taking the liberty of sending your letter on to our Nixon Volunteers headquarters here in Washington. I know that they will notify the appropriate people in Kansas so that we can take advantage of your very generous offer. Again, thanks very much for writing. Best wishes, Yours in Sincerely, KAI H. I assume you will want to pass the offer on to your contact in Kansas. ci/s 8/10/60 August 10, 1960 Dear Ed: I, too, am very sorry that we did not have the opportunity to spend some time together in Chicago. Unfortunately, things were even more involved than I had expected them to be. As I explained to you earlier, 1 will probably be on the road most of the time from now on and Jim Bassett will be handling all basic scheduling for the Vice President. For this reason, I am glad it worked out for you to get together with him, and I am sure that the plans for the Lox & Bagel breakfast will be carried forward as soon as a time can be definitely comitted. Dear Mr. Bassett: C The enclosed clippings were taken from two Chicago newspapers and seemed to convey the idea that the October 15th date at Springfield, Illinois is now a firm one. If this 1s correct, then October 16th would be ideal for our Breakfast. I do not wish to appear to be pressing, and if it were not for this publicity I would have waited for word from you in accordance with our under- P standing. However, if October 16th is available it would be well for us to know it as soon as possible, as the more time we have to prepare the more successful will be the Breakfast.
