Monday, June 25, 2007 Page 2 of 2 July 18, 1960 TO: Bob Finch FROM: Bob Haldeman Following are some notes on the last couple of calls from Neidecker in Chicago: 1) He has been in touch with Negro leaders and among other things, they are pushing for a Mrs. Rogers, a former Assistant U.S. Attorney in Illinois, who is a widely-respected Negro leader, to be considered as a seconder for the Vice President's nomination. 2) The negro group also wants to be sure that Thruston Morton is going to come out of the Convention hall and greet the Negro demonstrators, the marchers, when they arrive at the Amphitheatre at about 7:30 Monday. It seems that Paul Butler came out of the L.A. Convention hall and greeted them and they expect the same treatment from the Republicans. 3) It looks as though we will be out of luck on landing the helicopter in Lincoln Park since there are some city regulations against this. 4) The big billboard across from the Convention hall that we were trying to get for Nixon Volunteers is apparently not available now because Mayor Dailey has pre-empted it to put his own welcome to the convention message on. 6/30/60 CPS June 30, 1960 Mr. Moyer, Resident Manager Hotel Blackstone Chicago, Illinois Dear Mr. Moyer: I would appreciate it very much if you would send me a written confirmation of my reservations and those for John Ehrlichman for the Convention. As best I can determine at this point, we will both be arriving on July 23rd and staying until approximately the 31st. As we originally requested, we will need two twin-bedded rooms since both Mrs. Haldeman and Mrs. Ehrlichman will be accompanying us. Also, as you know, we would like to be located in some other part of the Hotel than that oc- cupied by the Vice President's immediate party. These two reservations are for our personal use and we will both be involved in staff activities for the Vice President 50 you may see our names appearing on some other room requirements in addition to the ones 1 have requested directly. This does not mean the other request will take care of our personal needs and therefore I want to be sure that you are holding the two rooms for us as we requested some months ago. Thanks very much for taking care of this. I will look forward to hearing regard- ing confirmation. I am certainly looking forward to seeing you and the rest of the Blackstone gang in a couple of weeks. Best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRH:cfo cc: John Ehrlichman 6/30/60 C / S June 30, 1960 TO: Bob Finch ee: Don Hughes, Rose Woods, Pate Flanigan FROM: Bob Haldeman RE: CHICAGO CONVENTION Per your request, I have made an assignment of one of the Advance Men to attend to Mrs. Frank Nixon during the period of the Convention. John Whitaker has agreed to de this and I personally feel he will do an excellent job and is very well suited for this assignment. If there is any adverse feeling on your part or that of anyone else con- cerned, please let me know right away so I can make the necessary change. 6/23/60 H. RH. C/S June 23, 1960 TO: Len Hall, Bob Finch FROM: Bob Haldeman SUBJECT: CONVENTION SECONDING SPEECHES I have had a letter from Charles Farrington Jr., who, as you know, will probably be working with us as an Advance Man during the campaign. Charlie says that his father, who will be a delegate from Arisona, has a fervent desire to give one of the seconding speeches for the Vice President. Charlie realizes that this is probably an unrealistic desire, but he points out that it might be worth- while having an Arisona delegate affirm the Arisona state's basic sentiments for Nixon by seconding the Vice President. especially in view of the Goldwater sit- uation. Charlie says his father is acquainted with the Vice President and with Len Hall, Charlie Halleck and others who will be running the convention. He also points out that his father was elected as a delegate over the strenuous opposition of some who considered his pro-Nixen attitude treasonous in the wake of the local stampede to Barry Goldwater. Charlie says, however, that his father is simply a realist that believes that Nixon will make the best president, while Goldwater makes the best Senator. I, of course, have no knowledge of what the plans are in this regard and am merely passing this along as information. I do think it would be a good idea If one of you would drop Charlie a note when you have the opportunity. FARRINGTON associates PUBLIC RELATIONS CONSULTANTS June 8, 1960 Mr. H. R. Haldeman P. O. Box 7398 Washington 4, D. C. Dear Bob: I have received your greatly informative memoranda regarding the recent New York and Illinois trips by the Vice President. Also, I have your general information to the effect that only the regular staff will be in the Nixon party at the Convention. This, of course, is most disappointing to me because I had hoped there might be some way in which I could be of service at that time. It is still possible that I will want to go on my own and, if so, I will probably write to you regarding hotel accomodations and admission to Convention activities. Inasmuch as my participation in the Nixon campaign has been seriously frowned upon by Senator Goldwater, I am afraid the possibility of securing such assistance from him at this time is rather remote. There is one other area in which I should like to ask Fift your counsel and, if possible, your help, Bob, and that concerns the fervent -- though conceivably unrealistic -- desire of my Dad, who is a Delegate from Arizona, to give Fan one of the seconding speeches for the Vice President. I am aware, of course, that such details are worked out well in advance and that there are many who will be clamoring for the same recognition. Nevertheless, in view of the Goldwater situation, which admittedly is not too serious as far as Mr. Nixon is concerned, it might be worthwhile to consider having an Arizona Delegate affirm this State's basic sentiments for Nixon in this manner. Dad is acquainted with the Vice President and with Len Hall, Charlie Halleck, and others who will be running that show; and, I might add, he was elected as a Delegate over the strenuous opposition of some who considered his pro-Nixon 2727 NORTH CENTRAL AVENUE PHOENIX. ARIZONA CRESTWOOD 9.6421 Mr. H. R. Haldeman Page 2 June 8, 1960 attitude treasonous in the wake of the local stampede to Barry Goldwater. Rest assured, however, that such is not the case. He is simply a realist who believes that Nixon will make the best President, while Goldwater makes the best Senator. If you have any good thoughts about this, please pass them along. For most of the balance of the Summer, Bob -- or at least until my assignment in the campaign begins ( I am figuring on the months of September and October for this ) -- I will be spending quite a bit of time in the Los Angeles area. Consequently, for the time being, mail will reach me quicker if it is addressed to my home: 512 East Third Street, Scottsdale, Arizona -- telephone WHitney 5-2733. As soon as possible, I will advise you of an address and telephone number over there where you can reach me in case of emergency. With best personal regards, I am Sincerely, Charlie Charles Farrington, Jr. 5/21/60 HKH e/E May 31, 1960 TO: Advance Men FROM: H. R. Haldeman RE: REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION - JULY 25 Most of you have indicated an interest or at least a question regarding participation in the forthcoming Republican National Convention in Chicago on July 25th. As you can readily understand, the staff of the Vice President will be very limited at the Convention. Other than the few people necessary to handle press contact and actual office operations, the general arrangements and activities at the Convention will be in the hands of the National Committee. We therefore will not be planning to bring a large group into Chicago either prior to or during the Convention. We may, however, be able to make arrangements for Hotel space and admission to the Convention sessions for you on the basis of your coming as an observer and at your own expense. If you do want a hotel room and admission to the sessions, would you please let me know before June 8th and we will do our best to fix you up. The specific plans for activity immediately after the Convention and on through the campaign period are not yet set, but I will advise you as soon as we have something definite. Best regards. 5/25/60 H. R. H. c/s May 25, 1960 TO: Advance Men FROM: H. R. Spencer Congrom, President of the Young Republicans in Indiana State Teachers College in Terre Haute as a possible worker at the Convention. He is planning to attend the Convention anyway and John feels he would be a very good organ- izer and available for whatever we might want him to do. He is apparently extremely right-wing but is strongly pro-Nixon. He can be contacted through the Indiana State Teachers College or in care of John Church, County Republican Chairman, 728 Cherry Street, Terre Haute, Indiana.
