Dick was most cooperative and gave an indication of under- standing our problem. We sincerely believe that the course which he has indicated will be followed during the next two or three weeks, will secure for him additional voting support and certainly be helpful in our University relations. Please extend to Mr. Hafner our regards and appreciation for the few minutes of his valuable time which gave us the information which we were seeking. Cordially yours, Rul Philip L. Boyd PLB:dc September 21, 1962 Dear Mr. Brown: Dick Nixon's campaign schedule calls for his traveling almost constantly these days, and in his absence, his office has referred your letter to me. I regret this acknowledgment has been delayed. I do want to thank you for writing as you have, and to assure you Dick Mixon will Lois Gaunt appreciate your thoughtfulness in bringing the subject matter to our attention. This will certainly be referred to the proper people for handling and appropriate follow-through. Many thanks for your interest and support, and kind regards. Black 1100 Sacramento Street San Francisco, California Dear Mr. Black: I am writing you because once again we need your help for the Republican Party. Cap Weinberger, who as you know is now State Chairman, and I firmly believe that the election can be won if we make certain that the Republicans get to the polls and vote. This, as you will understand, is a mechanical job which takes a great deal of manpower. In 1956 we were successful in persuading many large businesses to permit some of their younger men to take time off to work for the Party. It is even more important that we get this type of cooperation in 1962. If we could arrange to free between 25 and 50 men in the northern part of the State for approximately six weeks before the election, Cap and I are convinced that it would have an appreciable effect on the Republican vote. We realize that many businesses are sensitive on this score inasmuch as they will be accused of favoring the Republicans. We have no objection to extending similar privileges to the Democrats. Quite frankly, they would not use them as efficiently, nor would the added man- power do them as much good as it would us. In setting up a program of this type it is essential to get started on the right foot. We would like you to issue an invitation to between ten to twenty selected top executives in San Francisco. Obviously we would want to consult with you and would rely on your judgment as to who should be invited. If we can get them together I am certain that Cap and I can convince them of the importance of what we are proposing and of the impact that it will have in November. Mr. James B. Black August 30, 1962 Page Two. I plan to be out of town until Thursday, September 6th. If, however, you are willing to discuss this matter further with Cap and me, I would appreciate it if your Secretary would call my office and set up an appointment so we can see you as soon as possible. Sincerely yours, my Joseph Martin, Jr. JMJr:cp CC: Mr. Caspar Weinberger September 11, 1962 Dear Stu: When Brack Hale returned to the office yesterday, he brought back your card and told me about the work you had done on the car being used for Dick Nixon. This is just a quick note to let you know such gestures are deeply appreciated, Stu. Many, many thanks. Hope all is going well with you. These are busy days, but I hope our paths will be crossing before too long. Meantime, our sincere thanks for your help. Kind regards and best wishes. WIN WITH NIXON! H. R. Haldeman Mr. Stuart Bryan North Star Motors, Inc. 3460 West Ninth Street Los Angeles, California Ross Barrett 9-16-62 Bob Haldeman attached memo from Dick Neary to Dinner Committee cc: Maury Stans Lou Quinn To use all the outside politicoes as suggested in the attached would, of course, be entirely contrary to our policy of running our own campaign in California, and should not be done. The idea of messages from leaders of various segments of the community is excellent, as long as they are Californians. This should be followed up as to whether or not it is mechanically feasible. However, it should not be done by diverting the activity of campaign personnel. We will have to assume everyone at the Dinner is already for us, and our campaign efforts must be directed toward the "leaning" votes. Same Formare) TO: Dinner Committee September 5, 1962 FROM: Dick Neary It's been suggested that our dinner program could be enlivened during the eating period if use were made of the large projection screen which, later in the program, will be used to carry the closed circuit TV exchange between the Los Angeles and San Francisco dinners. Telegrams, perhaps accompanied by pix of senders, could be flashed on the screen -- messages of tribute to Eisenhower primarily, with a paragraph endorsing Nixon's campaign added. We would need at least fifty of these to be effective during the period reserved for eating. Duplicates could be shown in Los Angeles during the same period. Brown 7525 Oak Park Avenue Van Nuys, California Dear Mr. Brown: Dick Nixon has given me a copy of your recent letter to him indicating that a group of you "Old Salts and Leathernecks" have decided to join with us in Dick's campaign. You listed several attributes which you wanted to see in a man of your choice, and I am taking the liberty of sending you herewith some material which you will find of interest. On Anti-Communism - a folder which reprints two articles Dick wrote for the Los Angeles Times on this subject. On Reorganization - a copy of Dick's speech given before the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco, outlining his plan for reorganising the California state government. On Veterans' affairs - a press release on the formation of our Statewide Veterans Committee. On Union Control - a statement Dick made in answer to Pat Brown's remarks at the recent California Labor Federation Convention. Mr. Brown 2 September 15, 1962 Dick mentioned he would like very much to get a group of the old SCAT people together, and I wonder if this is a project you would be able to take on? If you do plan to form a group, I know Dick would like to have the chance to see all of you again. I am asking Dan Waters of our office to get in touch with you regarding your organisational plan so that we can give you any help you might need. Thanks very much for your support and assistance. R.N. asked if Bill meant that Jack should become a member of the professional staff and Bill said 'no'. He does feel that Jack should be called in for a Conference for the purpose of giving us the benefit of his analysis of Brown's Legis- lative weaknesses and possibly issues. You can be sure Mr. Nixon is looking forward to this fine affair. Miss Jean Dewey of our San Francisco office will be handling arrangements. Her address is 525 Market Street and tele- phone is Douglas 2-5576. Please designate one person in your organization as her contact for plans on this visit in order to avoid any confusion. Mr. Me Clellan has also mentioned to me the note be has received from Mr. Buck regarding the date. Although we cannot confirm acceptance at this time, 1 do want to assure you the invitation is one Mr. Nixon would like very much to accept. We are attempting to work around other firm commitments but are hopeful the April 13th date in San Marino will prove possible. Just as quickly as we have a definite answer for you, we will either telephone or write you. Meantime, this is just to let you know the invitation is appreciated and is receiving priority attention. You will be hearing from us soon. Kind regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman cc: Mr. McClellan Mr. Karl P. Buck File: Schedule Committee X B X Chron. January 22, 1962 Mr. A. R. Much as he would like to accept, his schedule for those months is fully committed, and he must reluctantly decline. Again, you may be certain that he would like to accept your cordial invitation, and he is extremely sorry that prior commit- ments make this impossible. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman January 22, 1962 Mr. Thomas F. Brewer Attorney at Law 1149 North El Dorado Street Stockton 3, California Dear Tom: In further reply to your letter of December 20th regarding the possibility of having Dick Nixon bestow the Alumnus of the Year Award on Eddie LeBaron at a dinner on May 5th, this is some- thing he would definitely like to do. However, we have a problem in setting firm dates that far in advance, as I'm sure you recognize. How long can we hold off on a firm acceptance? The more time we can have the better - but I know you'll need a specific answer soon. Best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman, bcc: Ruth Watson, S. F. January 23, 1962 H. Unfortunately, his schedule for that day is already fully committed, and he will be unable to accept your kind offer. However, we are trying to work something out for a possible date later in March or perhaps April and will be in touch with you as soon as possible. Again, thank you for your thoughtfulness in writing. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman cc: Ruth Watson, S. F. January 17, 1962 Mr. Wallace Brown, President San Fernando Valley State College Young Republicans 1951 22nd Street Santa Monica, California Dear Mr. Brown: Mr. Nixon has turned your letter of November 10th over to me for further reply. He much appreciates your very kind invitation to be the guest of the San Fernando Valley State College Young Repub- licans at a faculty luncheon and student program in February and wishes he could join you for the interesting program you have planned. The Schedule Committee made every attempt to work out a suitable date, but unfortunately, Mr. Nixon's time in February is fully com- mitted and he will have to decline your cordial invitation. I hope we may be able to work out a mutually suitable date for an ap- pearance at San Fernando Valley State in the not too distant future. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman January 19, 1962 Honorable John A. Busterud Fourth and E Streets Santa Rosa, California Dear John: Regarding your letter of December 27, 1961 to Sandy Quinn, Dick Nixon is committed to the Chinatown Parade in San Francisco the night of February 24th, but perhaps he would be able to drop in at the Hungarian Sports Federation dinner, either before or after the parade. Don't announce any appearance at the Hungarian event now, but we would appreciate your thoughts on the possibility of working this in on the 24th. Sincerely, H. R. The letter did have to follow a rather devious route before it reached him, and then he held up replying until proper procedures were set up for handling out of state donations. Your offer to contribute $1,000 to the California campaign is very much appreciated by Mr. Mixon. As you know from past experience, your presumption that money is harder to get during the primary is certainly correct. May I suggest that you make your check payable to "Nizon for Governor" and send it to me, marked personal, at 3908 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles 5, California. Best regards. Sincerely, M. R. Haldeman January 10, 1962 Dear Melba: I have heard from Jim Krieger and have put him directly in touch with Hugh Flournoy who is working on the development of Task Forces for issue study - - especially water. My function in the campaign is going to be concentrated on the organizational side, and I felt it would be better for Krieger to work directly with those responsible for development of issue material. I am sorry we didn't get a chance to chat at the "Woman of the Year" affair, but hope we will be seeing you up here again before long. I appreciate your suggestion on Mac Faries and will get in touch with him. I certainly agree with you that water will be the major issue in the campaign and it will be very helpful to get Mr. Kreiger's views and especially his analysis of what Brown's pitch will be. Dick is going to set up a Task Force on the water issue and I think the first step would be to ask for Mr. Kreiger's suggestions as to who, in addition to himself, he feels might be valuable to have on this Task Force. Would you like to 4th nic for this information, or would you like me to get in togon with Ma directiv) I will be glad to handle it however you think best. I very much appreciate the offer of a place to get away from it all, and especially the removal of the telephones. You may find us taking you up on it before too long. Thanks very much for writing. Love, H. R. Haldeman December 22, 1961 Mr. Thomas F. Brewer 1149 North L1 Dorado Street Stockton 3, California Dear Tom: Thanks for your advice on the San Joaquin County Safety Council invitation. We will follow your suggestion and skip this one. I agree with you that the possibility of Dick bestowing the Alumnus of the Year award on Eddie LeBaron would be a much better opportunity for an appearance in Stockton. I have referred this to our Schedule Committee and hope that we will be able to adjust Dick's schedule so that he can be there on May 5th. We will let you know one way or the other very shortly. Be sure to let us know of any other possibilities of this sort that may arise. Best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman December 6, 1961 Mr. Philip L. Boyd White Park Building Ninth and Market Streets Riverside, California Dear Phil: First, let me correct my home address for you, since the Robert Haldeman to whom you addressed your letter is another individual who also lives in the Pacific Palisades and who is at present, as you can imagine, receiving a great deal of my mail. My home address is 550 Spoleto Drive, Santa Monica, Calif. We did, indeed, enjoy an unusual evening at the Jonathan Club and I certainly appreciated John's making possible our chatting again after many years. I certainly understand your reasoning regarding the timing of Bill Knowland's help and am very much aware of the situation regarding the "Right to Work" issue. We, of course, recognize some potential problems with the forthcoming book, as you outline, but I think it will also have some counterbalancing advantages in the California Campaign. Some of these would include the reaffirmation of Dick's position and long record of leadership in the fight against Communism; the detailed clarification of the 1952 Fund Case -- which should help to counter- act some of the current phony smears --; and a number of details regarding the 1960 Campaign which are pertinent in the forthcoming California election. In any event, the commitments and contracts on this book were made prior to Dick's declaration for Governor and, in view of this and the amount of money involved, it would seem at this point to be unwise to hold it up. 2. Mr. Philip L. Boyd December 6, 1961 As you suggest, however, Dick will be developing a series of articles and statements on the State of California's growth opportunities during the '60's which will outline his interest and programs on the issues you itemized. I certainly understand your position in regard to Knight but I hope that it will not preclude our drawing on you for some advice and counsel behind the scenes. I completely agree with you that Brown will increase in strength between now and the election and that we must operate on the basis of leaving no stone unturned. Thank you very much for your thoughtfulness in writing. I hope we will have an opportunity in the months ahead to discuss some of these things in detail. I would especially like to ask you for some help on the educational program when we get into some of the details in that area. In the meantime, best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRH/jb PHILIP L. BOYD WHITE PARK BUILDING NINTH AND MARKET STS RIVERSIDE CALIFORNIA November 30, 1961 Mr. Robert J. Haldeman 16044 Anoka Drive Pacific Palisades, California Dear Bob: We certainly enjoyed an unusual evening together as John Vaughn's guests at the Jonathan Club. There were high lights and low levels but on the whole a most memor- able occasion. I particularly enjoyed our brief conversa- tions including the few minutes we had together in the lounge late in the evening. It occurred to me this morning as I drove home and considered our remarks that I should like to expand a little in better explanation of hastily expressed opinions. My thought that Bill Knowland could be more helpful in the primary rather than in the general election campaign was based on the fact that four years ago he was identified actively with the "Right to Work" issue on the ballot. This brought him into disrepute not only with labor but with quite a few of the liberal elements of the Democratic Party. As Dick Nixon will find it necessary to pick up the independent vote and some of the more liberal Democrats before he can expect to be elected, I then assume that Bill Knowland would be a burden in the latter part of the two campaigns. As to the primary effort, if the two can be separated, Knowland does appeal to most of the conservative Republicans which of course, is more than a majority of the sentiment to select the nominee. Also, I wanted you to know I am really a little concerned about the book to be released in serial form and later bound covers on the subject of the six Crises. Each of these will emphasize Dick Nixon's interest in affairs other than in California. It will be well and enthusiastically received nationally but in my opinion, not of real value to him in his campaign to become Governor of California. It also can be used by his opponent Pat Brown to point out his complete divorce from California developments during the past few years. 2. If on the other hand, Dick could prepare another book or series of articles on such a subject as "California, the Growth State during the 60's" he then could show his interest and constructive program on such subjects as agriculture, water and flood control, education including the Master Plan as an economy and efficiency development, more industry, more jobs rather than more relief and more unemployment insurance, an aggressive attack on highway congestion, etc. It is necessary for me to repeat to you that I have a feeling of obligation to Knight based on my appreciation of the appointment as a member of the Board of Regents which prevents me from openly supporting any opposing candidate. You, however, have discovered my real sentiment which I hope I will be able to express openly either through the withdrawal of Knight or his defeat in the primary. This of course, is a confidential statement to you as a friend. You have my best wishes for a successful effort. It will be a difficult task to elect Dick Nixon Governor and a more difficult one for him to get along with a Democratic Legislature. It can be done, however, but you must antici- pate that Brown will become stronger between now and November and that no stone can be left unturned to acquire the neces- sary bipartisan support. Cordially yours, Platiph Royd Philip L. Boyd PLB:dc December 4, 1961 Mr. Earl Behrens San Francisco Chronicle San Francisco, 19. California Dear Squire: Thanks very much for your note of November 15 and the attached editorial from the Chronicle. I have brought this to Dick's attention and he appreciated your sending it down. I was certainly glad to learn that Templeton Peck was favorably impressed by Dick's meeting in the Chronicle ne) office and I certainly hope that this attitude will continue. I trust that we'll be seeing you before too long and, the in the meantime, very best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman HRH/jb Box 706 350 No. 1st Avenue Phoenix, Arizona November 10, 1961 Honorable Richard M. Nixon Former Vice President of the U. S. Attorney at Law Beverly Hills, California Dear Richard: This letter is to advise you that I am the Bi-Partisan author of Honor- able Chief Justice Earl Warren's first bid for Governor of California. We felt because of the threat of Communism in America it would give latitude to the free people's of the World by putting his name on both Democrat and Republican ballots. As you remember he was Attorney General at the time. I wrote the petition and authorized all the delegates of the A. F. of L. and C. I. O. to endorse Chief Justice Earl Warren at their State Con- vention which was held in San Francisco in 1941, which procedure was followed. I studied at Columbia University in 1951 under President Eisenhower and would like to meet you personally. I wish to discuss with you the possibility of getting a private law practice. I would like to meetthe Honorable Chief Justice Earl Warren, and I believe my cause is just. Would you be able to see me a few minutes when you come to Phoenix, Arizona. Notwithstanding the fact you have numerous political friends out of friendship to Chief Justice Earl Warren, wouldn't you like to meet a bi-partisan friend who admires your vigorous stand in fighting Com- munism on your South American trip under President Eisenhower. Nixon Whittier, California Sir: Spokane has a young, extremely attractive, and talented girl in the field of constitutional government. She needs an opportunity to serve under leadership which only you could provide. As you can see from the enclosed data sheet, she is brilliantly capable in many fields, not the least of which are secretarial duties and familiarity with the Russian language. During the years of 1959 and 1960, the Republican County Chairman and myself (vice-chairman) had many occasions to call on Miss Becker for assistance. On each occasion, the task was completed to perfection. As a public speaker, she is considered a spellbinder which is made possible by "speaking from convictions". She has now graduated from the University of Washington, and we feel that further exposure to our cause would benefit all concerned. Spokane is rather a small community, and consequently, the opportunities for political growth are somewhat limited. We therefore urge you to give some consideration to this young woman. We may easily furnish a long list of prominent Republican figures in the state of Washington who feel as we do. With every hope for your continued success, we remain, Sincerely, Patucia G. While it is not contemplated that the full structure of staff and volunteer personnel for this effort will be completed until early in 1962, the budget for the Campaign will prevent our utilizing the services of individuals from outside the state at any level of this organization. It is almost shocking. I am at this time really afraid that Dick won't get anyplace if this thing continues. It is from the ground level. I am not much out of La Habra what I hear is not good at all. For instance, we have this man Shell who came out to the ladies federation - at the Country Club and had quite a large crowd. He had spoken at that time before 360 groups of people. I was not at that meeting. I know weveral who were for Nixon who were at the meeting and they are not for Nixon now. I think RN has to pay more attention to this threat -- it is not anything to be brushed off as not being serious. " "I do know that this one place made quite an effect. The people are hungry for someone to come out and tell them what to do. If RN doesn't soon get going I think that thousands will be committed before he gets started." I have been a Party worker for about twenty years and the only possible place I can think of that they may have gotten my name all correct is the National Committee in Washington. When they published "Straight from the Shoulder" they used to send their mailing list from this town for me to keep up-to-date.
