Statement for CADLE Bulletin
You have the file on this.
Let's try to get the statement to them as much in
advance of their October 15th deadline as is possible.
September 20, 1962
Dear Mr. Woods:
Many thanks for your letter of September 17th.
We do appreciate having been put on your mailing
list.
Mr. Nixon's statement for your November issue of
CADLE NEWS is being prepared and will reach you in
advance of your October 15th deadline. He
appreciates the opportunity to contribute to your
Bulletin.
Let's hope all bases are covered at this point, and
all mishaps and misunderstandings are now cleared up.
We do appreciate your cooperation.
With kind regards and good wishes.
Sincerely,
H. R. Haldeman

Dear Mr. Haldeman:
Thank you for your letter of September 7. We understand the situation.
I have worked in offices which became swamped with work, so am quite
well aware of how things can get out of hand. But just so you will know
that we did not fall down on the job after your request for information
of December 22, we sent you a copy of our monthly bulletin each month,
and these bulletins outlined our objectives and complaints together with
what corrective steps we felt might be taken.
We understand too, how busy Mr. Nixon must be, and would let this whole
matter drop except that we have received a reply from the governor, and
feel that we must now print his answer. On the other hand it would seem
not to be proper to give space to the governor without also giving space
to Mr. Nixon.
I am sorry that I am the one that must, by this request, add to the work
of Mr. Nixon.
Thanking you,
Tow Wads

RN Statement for November issue of CADLE (deadline October15th)
Attached is subject file.
I understand the July 9th letter to RN mentioned
by Mr. Woods was received, reached Research, but now
cannot be located and that no action was ever taken on it.
Please note my letter, this date, to Woods --
promising the statement.
The file should be returned to me, with copy of
the statement provided CADLE.

Dear Mr. Woods:
Dick Nixon's office, in his absence, has forwarded
to me your letter of September 4th in order to
avoid further delay in clearing up the unfortunate
circumstances involved in your previous corres-
pondence with him.
First, we immediately checked and thus far have been
unable to uncover your letter of July 9th. Either
it was misdirected through the mails, or possibly
was lost in the avalanche of mail received by
Mr. Mixon following the primary. In either case,
we are of course concerned and do want to correct
any impression you have that this matter has been
delayed without apparent reason. This is not the case.
I have also referred to my correspondence with you
of last December, copies attached. As indicated, I
initiated the contact with your organization and
requested your views on the Department insofar as
past and present situations were concerned, as well as
what corrective steps you felt might be taken. Since
we never received this, I thought you might have
decided to drop the matter.
Mr. Woods

Of prime importance at the moment, however, is to
assure you of Dick Nixon's interest in contributing
a statement to the November issue of CADLE, and it will
be in your hands prior to your deadline of October 15th.
Again, many thanks for your follow-up. We are deeply
sorry the unexplained fact your letter of July 9th
did not reach us caused this inconvenience and
misunderstanding. If the information mentioned in
my letter of December 22nd is now available, I an sure
Mr. Nixon would be most interested in reviewing it.
With kind regards and good wishes.

Dear Mr. Nixon:
On July 9th of this year I wrote telling you that the members of this
association had directed me to ask you, and Governor Edmund G. Brown,
to write to us telling us of your plans for the Department of Motor
Vehicles in the coming four years.
A copy of the letter is enclosed.
We have received a reply from Governor Brown. No reply has as yet been
received from you. We know that you are a very busy man and can under-
stand well how this matter may have been over looked. However we feel
it would not be proper to print Governor Brown's message without also
printing a like message from you.
Our November CADLE News should go the the printer on October the 15th.
May we please hear from you prior to this date?
Thanking you,

Dear Mr. Nixon:
The members of this association have directed me to write to you, and
to Governor Edmund G. Brown, asking you both to write to us telling
us of your plans for the Department of Motor Vehicles in the coming
four years. We are particulerly interested in your plans as pertains
to driver licensing and post licensing control of drivers.
Any information which you may be kind enough to send us will be printed
in our monthly bulletin, The CADLE News.
It seems appropriate, at this time, to point out to you that we are well
pleased with the present Director of our Department, Mr. Tom Bright, and
hope that your plans include retaining him in this position.

December 8, 1961.
Mr. H. R. Haldeman
Campaign Manager
Nixon for Governor Committee
Los Angeles.
Bob:
I herewith hand you approximately one thousand potential "Nixon precinct
workers", Statewide.
The enclosed CADLE NEWS is the monthly publication of the California
Association of Drivers License Examiners. There are approximately 500 of them
employed by the State of Califormia. While they are not all paid-up members,
they each receive a copy of the monthly CADLE NEWS, and go along 100% with the
gripes, requests, actions and attitude of the organization.
They were disappointed under Governor Knight and have received little if
any notice or comsideration under Governor Brown.
The enclosed copy of the CADLE NEWS contains their many requests for
"relief".
At their State Convention on Sunday October 8th, 1961, you will note
at the bottom of page "4" a resolution that the President of Cadle contact
candidates for governor of the two major parties, requesting imformation on
their plans for the Department, and that such information or comdensation, be
printed in CADLE News as a voting guide for the members.
I have made it my business to become acquainted and friendly with the
10 Examiners in the Bellflower office of the State Motor Vehicle Dept. At least
7 of them are democrats, but they will not vote for Brown come November 1962.
They advise me that the entire membership of their group feel the same way.
Each examiner tests for drivers license about 7500 people annually. This
means that each examiner will have persomal contact with at least 3500 persons
during the next six months, or a total of 1,750,000 persons will be given drivers
tests during the next six months by the 500 examiners.
In each office there is an average of 10 employees besides the examiners.
There are about 125 offices throu. hout the State. The office employees are very
sympathetic toward the examiners.
Refering again to their CADLE News of December, in as much as they in
their convention officially passed a resolution authorizing their President to
comfer with the candidates for Governor, it would seem to me to be very ethical
that you contact the President of their group, Tom Woods of San Leandro, Calif.
The office address is 2000 Washington Ave, San Leandro. Were I in your position
I would not wait until Woods contacted me, because he might contact the other
candidates first and get promises from them, etc, etc, which might mullify any
friendly attitude toward them that Dick Nixon might have or develop after hearing
their case.
HRH-2
Also attached are the addresses of all Motor Vehicle Hq in
the State.
The names of the newly elected officers of the Association are
OR page 10 of the CADLE NEWS.
I respectfully suggest you get someone on this right now...these
lads are ripe for pickings.
Ground work should be laid that the President of Cadle, Tom Woolds,
be invited to comfer in person with Richard Nixon.
Good luck,
Sincerely yours.
John C. Landreau.

Mr. Tom Woods
President
CADLE
2000 Washington Avenue
San Leandro, California
Dear Mr. Woods:
I note in the December issue of CADLE liews that you, as
President of CADLE, have been asked to contact the
candidates for Gov ernor of the two major parties
requesting information on their plans for the Department.
I understand that your members have a number of thoughts
regarding action or inaction on the part of the Governor
of California over the years, and I would be very much
interested in learning from you what you feel has been
neglected or mishandled in the past, and also what positive
steps you feel would be advisable for the future.
If you are going to be in the Southern California area in
the near future, perhaps we might be able to get together
to discuss this. If this is not possible, I would suggest
that you meet with one of our Northern California people
and would be glad to set this up at your convenience.
Would you be so kind as to give no an indication of your
current plans and any thoughts you wish to express at this
point.
Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
H. R. Haldeman
