Mr. Richard Nixon
Nixon for Governor Headquarters
3908 Wilshire Boulevard
Los Angeles, California
Attention: Mr. Robert Halderman
As the credit union movement has grown and developed, there
has been a greater awareness on the part of credit union leaders
of the importance of the political and legislative influence on
credit unions. Credit unions are faced with the need to keep pace
in the consumer credit and money management fields.
Technological advances and new concepts in consumer finance
require adjustments and broadening of credit union membership
services. The future welfare of credit unions is dependent upon
preserving legislative gains and achieving new ones.
It is significant at this time, therefore, that credit union people
throughout our state are wondering where the two gubernatorial
candidates stand with respect to credit unions. Accordingly, we
have been asked to invite a statement from you and Governor Brown
that would tell credit union people your regard for credit unions.
The statement would, of course, be widely circulated among the
1, 740 California credit unions and their officials. Additionally,
press releases might be prepared to reach the more than one and
a half million credit union members in our state.
We are hopeful that you can comply with our request. We wish
you success in the forthcoming election.

Statement of
Richard M. Nixon
September 29, 1962
for: California Credit Union League
I was pleased to learn of the
healthy growth of the Credit Union movement in
California, and the contribution the 1740
California Unions and their officials, with
more than one and a half million members throughout
the state, are making to the economic strength of
our future.
By promoting thrift, offering low cost
lending services and increasing financial responsibility,
Credit Unions have played an important role in helping
millions of American families to realize a better
standard of living.
The principles of individual initiative
and economic self-help which have contributed so much
to your success, are basic to the achievement of a
fuller and richer life for peoples everywhere.
We need to encourage such ideals and
endeavors, not only in California, but in the world-
wide struggle for individual freedom and economic
determination.

Dear Mr. Draper:
Your letter to Mr. Nixon, addressed
in my care, has been shown to him.
He is very glad indeed to comply
with your request for a statement regarding
credit unions, and it is attached hereto.
Dick Nixon appreciated your con-
tacting him, and the good wishes extended.
With kind regards,
Sincerely,
H. R. Haldeman
