Dear Mr. Haldeman:
Thank you for your kind note of September 17th in reply
to my letter to Mr. Nixon, dated September 7th.
I have sent a copy of your letter and am sending a copy of this
letter, to Mr. H. E. Drake of our Los Angeles office. I feel
certain that this office can help you lay out any direct mail
plans you may desire whether they relate to the specific bro-
chure sent out by the National Committee or not.
Again may I offer my continuing good wishes for the success of

Dear Mr. Gallop:
Mr. Nixon has referred to me your letter of September 7th since
it relates specifically to a function of the campaign organization.
I also have the brochure which was received direct from the
Republican National Committee.
Dick appreciated, as do we, your interest in the California
gubernatorial campaign and your offering the facilities of
The Reuben H. Donnelley Corporation. Your personal expression of
support was also gratefully received. We too are serry you are
not in California so that we could take advantage of your very
thoughtful offer to help out.
We certainly recognize the value of your direct mail technique
and the mailing lists from which you work. Unfortunately, however,
we do not have the funds to cover this type of operation.
Additionally, we are already working with lists which are enabling
us to reach the California voters with our literature and mail-outs
at relatively lower cost.
The services offered by The Reuben H. Donnelley Corporation will
certainly be kept in mind in the future, and we do appreciate your
writing us.
With many thanks, and kind regards.

Thanks very much for your

In my opinion, the data
supplied by one of the Democrate for Nixon

thought out. It's good reading, and his
recommendations should be helpful.
We appreciate your passing

Dear Bob:
One of the prominent Democrats in Santa Clara County,
who is working for Nixon, has dictated the enclosed on
the basis that this information might be of some help to
Mr. Nixon in his campaign talks.
You might have someone look this over, as this individual
who prefers to remain anonymous, formerly was very close to
Governor Brown.

Dear Phil:
Thanks so very much for your letter.
The suggested approach to our taxing problems
is certainly worthy of detailed and careful study.
I have found it most interesting and am today passing
it along to our Research Staff with the request that
they examine the data you have submitted and express
an opinion.
I do want to assure you the Dickson portfolio
will be handled with the greatest care, and we will
make certain the material is returned to you in good
order.
As for the assistance which you and your brother
are so generously contemplating, whatever is done in this
connection will be received most gratefully.
Thank you again for your fine interest and
support. It was good to see you the other evening at the
Jonathan Club and have a chance for a visit.
With kind regards.

I have no comment on the proposal involved in
the attached tax file provided by Phil Davis. However,
will you let me have your comments after you have had a
chance to look it over?
The so-called Dickson Portfolio is of priceless
historical value, so will you please handle it carefully
and make certain it is kept intact. It must be returned
to Mr. Davis ultimately.

Phil Davis
Phil Davis called me several weeks ago, saying
he and his brother Tom wish to make a substantial
contribution to the campaign.
He suggested they would make available their aero-
commander with pilot and all expenses up to $5,000, and
that they would also make a cash contribution of an
additional $5,000 - or a total contribution of about
$10,000.
It now appears, and I have so notified Phil, that
we will not be able to take advantage of his offer of the
plane since we will have to use a larger plane during the
campaign. When I told him this, he indicated they of course
still wanted to make a contribution, but I am not sure
whether he intends to give us a total of $5,000 or more.
In any event, Phil should be contacted on a top
level basis, and I am sure he will come through.

Dear Bob:
I will make one more attempt to volunteer to
work for Mr. Nixon in the current campaign.
As I wrote earlier I have been entirely at
liberty since mid-April when "Advise and Consent" closed
here. My next show with Helen Hayes - Maurice Evans will not
occupy me until after the election.
Since I did not hear from you I spent a few weeks
prior to the primary out in Pat Martin's district and since
the National Committee meeting I have been doing some work
for the Congressional Campaign Committee at Bob Wilson's re-
quest. My main interest continues to be Mr. Nixon's election
as Governor and I would rather work to that end. If there is
anything I can do I would be more than happy to give full
time to the campaign.
Sincerely Bein yours,
William L. Denton
P. S. I was with Farley Granger at "Unsinkable Molly Brown"
when you came over. As we were making a hurried exit I didn't
have time to remember myself to you.

Dear Bob:
Thank you for your letter of March 19, relating to
possible attendance of Mr. Nixon at the play "Advise and
Consent." I extended the invitation because Mr. Nixon
told me last month that he thought we could get some good
publicity out of it. I had no real illusions that it would
provide a gripping evening of entertainment for him. In
fact reading the reviews here in Los Angeles would lead one
to believe that what we really had at the Hartford was some
sort of medicine show with talent.
To repeat something of which you are aware: I can give

Dear Bob:
Your letter of November 20, 1961, was forwarded
from my former office in San Francisco. The address in-
dicated above is the better one for me now.
It is difficult for me to be specific about the
type of help I wish to contribute during the coming cam-
paign because I am anxious to do everything possible in
Mr. Nixon's behalf. I feel that I am in an excellent
position to do some advance work and also to help out as
part of the traveling staff. I am largely in control of
my own time. After December 15, I will not have a play
on the coast until mid-March when ADVISE AND CONSENT
opens in San Fran cisco.
Of course, during this period there are things I
must do in connection with my employment but I could well
get away on an expense re-imbursed basis to advance or
accompany the party. I am also willing to do anything
that might need to be done in the headquarters although
I think that my main value would be in utilizing my
knowledge of California gained through two years of
covering the state for the Bank of America.
I trust that the above gives you some idea of my
ability to be of service during the coming campaign. I
look forward to hearing from you, at your convenience.

Dear Bob:
In response to your letter of June 25th, I think you
do not understand the law about political contributions.
A corporation cannot contribute and, if they did, both
the corporation would be subject to fine and the
officers could go to jail.
My personal contributions, plus the contributions of
many of our other officers, substantially exceed any
billings that will be made to the Nixon-for-Governor
Campaign:
There is no alternative but for us to charge the
Campaign Committee with the gas and oil used when our
plane is used, but you can rest assured that in the
forthcoming campaign, the contributions of our execu-
tives will far exceed the cost of the plane and our
company cannot make the plane available without
charge without being subject to serious penalties.
Best regards.

Serry my absence has delayed acknowledging your
letter of July 3rd. This refers to Mr. Soher's
request for Dick's comments on fiscal
responsibility.
As you know, Dick has expressed his views on this
issue in many of his speeches. Rather than try to
come up now with a composite of his various statements,
is there a possibility the enclosed remarks would
answer and help Mr. Soher? At first blush, this seems
the quickest way to provide him with the information
he is seeking for reference.
However, if you still feel something more is in order,
please let me know and we'll try to do the needful.

Dear Bob:
Later this month Mr. Hubert Soher, a noted economist and
a good Republican, is making a talk before the Commonwealth Club
in San Francisco. His theme will be balanced budgets and the lack
of understanding by the present Administration on fiscal matters.
He will stress the attitude of the Eisenhower Administration
on spending but would like to have a comment from Dick Nixon on
his philosophy on fiscal responsibilities of the State. He will not
mention the source or quote from Dick's remarks but would like to
tie it in with his speech. This fellow is completely trustworthy and
will not work against us. In fact, he is doing everything possible to
help in the coming campaign.
He called me yesterday, and I promised that I would do what
I could to fill him in. I am wondering if you could take this up with
Dick and see if we can submit something which will be useful.
As I said before, he is very well thought of around this area,
and his comments will get wide publicity.
Please let me know what can be done so I can answer him.

Dear Mr. Haldeman:
I have compiled this file which bears principally on the
insurance industry in California. It covers the life,
casualty, unemployment insurance and unemployment compen-
sation disability.
My motivation for this was a publicity article which
appeared in the Los Angeles Times on Thursday, April 26,
1962, and had the caption "Nixon Unable to Find Issues
Brown Claims".
If Mr. Nixon could take a stand on all or any of these
subjects I am sure he would be appealing to the votes of
some 60,000 licensed agents and brokers and upwards of
400,000 insurance personnel in the State of California.
Yours very truly,

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Kading:
Helene Drown has shown me your recent letter to her and
we are, of course, most interested in your comments
regarding activity in Butte County.
Dick Mixon is planning to be back up that way and will
include a visit to Chico later in the campaign. It is a
shame he couldn't get by on the last trip, but this will be
on the itimerary for the next one.
If you will let me have further details regarding the
correspondence to Dick's office which you say has had
Mr. Gilbert F. Jones
bee Mr. C. Kenneth Lyde
delayed replies, I will be very glad to check into it. The
only way ve can correct this type of situation is to have
it reported to us, se I will appreciate your letting me
know when such instances occur.
Our Co-Chairmen for Butte County, C. Kenneth Lyde and Gilbert
F. Jones, will, I know, appreciate any suggestions you
may have for the County organisation. Mr. Lyde is at
2765 Center St., Oroville and Gilbert Jones is located at
173 East 4th St., Chico.
Many thanks for your fine help and support.

Dear Mr. Natlend:
Mr. Rune has told me of your
kindness in providing the tape of Mr. Nixon's
remarks on March 20th at the Palos Verdes South
High School.
For the time you devoted to this task
and your kindness in making the tape available to us,

we are deeply grateful.
I
The past weeks have been extremely
busy ones for all of us, and I have had to be away
from the office a good share of the time travelling
date
with the Candidate. I trust you will understand
this accounts for our much too long delayed expression
Drown, Helene

of gratitude.

campaign organization generally, our sincere thanks
for a job well done.
Best regards.

Dear Mrs. Drown -
Have just spoken with Mrs. Mozingo
on the telephone. When we could find no record
of correspondence here - or at the mail office,
I thought a telephone call was in order.
It seems she had called the
Long Beach Headquarters some time ago requesting
a speaker for their Club meeting. They had
directed her to Henry Clock. She had written him,
but he had never replied. Since then, she has
heard that he was on vacation at the time.
Mrs. Mozingo also has had a more
recent conversation with Lorain Lungren, who was
quite distressed when she learned of the situation.
In any event, the contact with Mrs. Lungren is
the proper one and Mrs. Mozingo seemed very
understanding.
Later, in conversation, she said
it had worked out perfectly, because the Shell
representative who had attended the meeting and
spoke to the group was quite obnoxious - so it
had actually worked to our benefit.
All in all, she appreciated our
follow-up. I mentioned your interest - and she
seemed most grateful.
Hope the needful has been done,
and please don't hesitate to let me know if we can
be helpful in situations like this.
