BOB HALDEMAN

John Bailey, Chairman
Democratic National Committee
Washington 25,0.C.
Dear Sir:
In the interests of insuring a Democratic victory and preserving
Constitutional Rights we, the undersigned Los Angeles County
Democratic Central Committee members, California Democratic Council
officials, and Presidents of Democratic Clubs urge you to use your
influence to seek cancellation of the scheduled (April 24-27)
Hearings of the House Un-American Activities Committee in Los
Angeles.
In addition to the oft-repested and justifiable arguments made
against this Committee on the grounds that it has been used to
abuse the rights of individuals whose views do not coincide with
those of the prevailing majority on the Committee, there is the
very obvious danger posed against local Democrats of liberal per-
sussion.
Based on past performances, the campaign which Nixon and company
will wage this year can be expected to include half-truths, mean-
ingless though mennacing labels and irrelevant charges designed
to confuse and intimidate voters. The past record of the Un-
American Activities Committee tells us that its hearings can help
to smear people and damage reputations quite spart from the guilt
of innocence of these people. During an election year sweeping
abuses of fellow Democrate can be very harmful to the cause of
Democracy and the Democratic Party.
We are confident that you will lend your aid to preserve our
traditional liberties and the Democratic Party's case in this
crucial election.
Very truly yours,
