Dear Mr. Fairbairn:
I was delighted to learn from Downey
Orrick of the very generous and effective support
you are giving to my candidacy for Governor.
It could not be more welcome, I can
I
assure you, and I wanted to add my own expression
of heartfelt appreciation to those I am sure you
have already received from Mr. Orrick and Arthur
Dolan.
As we shift into high gear for what has
every indication of being the hardest-fought campaign
in California's history, it is particularly gratifying
to know that such an experienced observer and partici-
pant in the political arena is an active member of the
P
team in our all-out drive for victory on November 6th.
I will be looking forward to having the
pleasure of thanking you personally for your fine co-
operation and assistance. In the meantime, my very
best wishes and kind regards,
Sincerely,
Y

Dear Bill:
We'll be on the lookout
for the package of jewelry. This can
certainly be put to good use and we
appreciate your sending it along.
This is going to be one of
the hardest hitting campaigns in
California's history - but there is no
doubt in our minds as to the outcome.
Glad to know you share our optimism
for the November victory.
Thanks again, Bill, and
very best regards.

Dear Bob:
One of these days you will be
receiving a rather heavy package of jewelry
which we had left over from the Midwest
Volunteers for Nixon-Lodge. Our women's
group sold these items and made a consider-
able amount of money with them. I'm afraid
there isn't enough here to make any big im-
pact, but I'm hoping that it will be helpful.
We certainly are doing a lot of
praying here that Dick will win in California,
and I have every belief that he will.
Sincerely,
Birt Fetridge

new
Dear Bob:
It was nice to hear from you after these
many, many months, and I certainly hope things are
going well for Mr. Nixon in California.
The man Nixon met at the Los Angeles
airport was my brother-in-law, Mr. Jerome Thor.
He and my sister, unfortunately, are now in Spain
as Jerry is making a movie and the word that I have
is that he will be there the better part of a year.
Therefore, I don't think that he will be available for
the campaign.
In case you want to contact him, address
him at the Hilton Hotel, Madrid.
Incidentally, during the 1960 campaign
we sold a lot of Nixon jewelry out of the Chicago
office. This provided us with some funds which were
very helpful. I have the residue of this jewelry in my
office and would be glad to send it out to you if you
feel that you could make adequate use of it.
With warm regards.
Sincerely,
Biy

Dear Bill:
I have a peculiar request and hope you may be able
to help me out.
Some time ago, Dick Nixon was on a plane from
New York to Los Angeles. Marlene Dietrich was also on the
same flight. Upon their arrival at the Los Angeles airport,
Miss Dietrich was met by a lady who identified herself to Dick
as your sister. There was a gentleman accompanying your sister
who is a television star of some importance, a former Democrat,
but now strongly pro-Nixon. Unfortunately, Dick does not
remember who this television star was, but is anxious that we
contact him and see if he is willing to become active in the
campaign. And so to my request.
Do you know who the gentleman might have been, or
could you contact your sister and find out who he was, or
tell me how I might be able to get in touch with your sister to
get this information.
Sorry to bother you with this, but will appreciate
any help you can give us.
Best regards.

Dear Joel:
Many thanks for your letter of
July 25th.
I can understand how some confusion
developed regarding your position in the
campaign. Apparently it was a misunderstanding
all the way around, and I appreciate your
full explanation of the circumstances involved.
We appreciate your help, Joel, and if
anything should develop where we can take advantage
of your availability and desire to help out
either down here or up north, we will certainly
get in touch with you. However, I do not
anticipate the staff to be expanded beyond
present limits, but do hope we can count on your
continued help in whatever area and capacity
for which you have the time. Glad to know Ray
Chambers has been in touch with you.
Best regards.

July 25, 1962
Dear Bob:
I just had your letter of the 17th forwarded to me
in LA, and felt that I had to answer it before going back
north today.
Its too bad that I missed you at headquarters Tuesday,
as you might have mentioned it, and I'd have known about
this matter before 7:30 pm.
Of course, I understand how such a letter came to be
3
burn
written, and understand your feeling on clarifying the sit-
to
uation. I am glad that you wrote about it to me, rather
N/A
than just keeping quiet about it, and causing aggrivation
to yourself, and me.
The fact of the matter is that I have never identified
myself with your staff, or the campaign to this point - as
such - being a long time supporter of RN, the CYRCF presidency,
etc. I've had enough trouble lately being controversial,
to add a blatant mistruth to the situation.
I can gather that this arose from Stan Lerch's end of
the table. Dick Ports knows about some of this, so let me
elucidate further.
I was campaign manager for Adm. Short's 14th AD race
(write-in) in the June primary. For a long time, I was one
of the few Nixon supporters on that campaign, and got him to
finally vote for Nixon the week before the election (aided
greatly by RN's performance on the telethon.
Following my trip to Seattle, I was in LA at the State
Central Committee, and checking on the appointments to the
State CC. As a write-in candidate, he was not entitled to
an appointment, and had to receive one from Alameda County.
I wrote this to him, clarifying Jordan's statement on Election
Code 1040, I think, and suggesting that he at least identify
himself to the Nixon people in Alameda County before this
was done, as people like Helen Read, Ruth Watson, etc. were
upset by his supposed Shell propensities, and that it
wouldn't hurt him to have people think him reasonable, which
he is, and sincerely interested in a running, active, winning
GOP ticket.
2
Since he's comparatively new to politics, it was easy for him
to misinterpret my letter - which is one of the dangers of letter
writing, I guess. He apparently blew up, called Stan up, and volunteered
to take on anybody trying to deprive him of his appointment. Most
of this had been settled, when I arrived back two days later. I
straightened out with him, what I'd meant, and that seemed to be it.
A day or so later, finishing out my obligation as coordinator
for the Central Committee in Alameda, I met Stan. We started out
with a discussion on the exhibit (GOP) for the Alameda County Fair,
and I asked him for some ideas. While he was helpful, we began with
a several minute conversation on my background, present functions, and
connections with the campaign. I said to him only that I'd worked on
certain things in the past, was working for the Admiral, and - as
far as the Nixon campaign was concerned - had just received a letter
from LA (Ray Chambers) indicating that I'd been made Chairman of the
College for Nixon group.
This is the only thing I've ever said, outside of the fact that
I know you, Bob Finch, etc. etc., and am friendly to Dick Ports, Sandy,
Ron, etc. I know Alameda is a rocky area sometimes, so these misunder-
standings don't suprise me, although I sometimes get puzzled why so
much of it goes on.
Hope this explains things to you. Partially for this reason,
I've quie the admiral's campaign, and still would like to work for
you on the gubernatorial campaign in the fall - either in LA or SF
area, and doing whatever you think I can do best. I have mentioned
this to Ports, today, and I think he can answer any questions you
might have.
Thanks again for the letter,
Best,
Joel

Dear Joel:
It has been brought to my attention that you are
identifying yourself as a member of my staff.
This, as I am sure you realize, can cause a great
deal of confusion, not only among other candidates
and their organizations, but our own organization
people.
At the same time, it goes without saying we are
deeply grateful not only for your continuing interest
in behalf of the Nixon-for-Governor campaign, but
also for whatever support you are free to offer it
in appropriate ways and through appropriate channels.
It is, however, unwise for you to misrepresent that
interest and support by leaving the impression you are
a staff member and are speaking as such. If this is
the case, I know you will clarify the situation
quickly. If it is not the case, I also know you will
understand why it is important for me to check the
matter with you directly and make certain it is
straightened out.
Please pass along anything you feel would be helpful,
Joel, and best regards.

Dear Bob:
Spencer this should this
Of course, my congratulations for the extremely succesful primary
victory achie ved yesterday. Lets hope that we can get all those 30

some percent voting for us in November.
Some schferting things up here - a lot of Demos. wrote in RMN, and
there seemed to be a lot of sentiment for him even from some around here
who either just went ahead and voted for Brown, or didn't vote. I was
at the County Clerk's until 7 am this morning, and people just didn't know
how to handle the write in vote. In some areas, Democrats were told that
their ballots would be invalidated if they didn't vote Democrat.
Taking everything into consideration, it looks like we all came out
fairly well. I got a kick out of seeing Charley Mc"horter checking up on
polling places yesterday. Seemed like old days, and past campaigns.
One thing - from July 1 to July 15th, the County Central Committee of
Alameda, in association with the State Central Committee, is having a
Republican exhibit at the Alameda County Fair.
We'd like you to have sent to us any material (pictures, speeches, re-
cordings, book, etc.) you'd like utilized in the exhibit.
I hope that I'll be able to continue to assist what I feel is just as
much my cause. I didn't like losing to these ultra-slobs, considering the
respensible conservatives separate, and I didn't like to have to sit and
shup up until we finished the primaries. I'd like to at least go on the
offensive and find out once and for all if these people are Republicans or
Fifth Columnists. I may be temporarily out of some office or another, but
I think that I can still help.
Will try to stop by and chat with you for a minute on my way back f rom

I note from some correspondence that bas come into the

At ao time during Joel Fisher's Falk year did ne complete
an assignment given to him by the State Committee. All of
his time (20 hours a week) that DA was supposed to give to
the party under the terms of the Falk agreement was spent
to further Joel Fisher's college federation image. I have
descussed this with Cap Weinberger and Ed Slevin and we all
feel this is not the type of young BEL we would recommend

Dear Bob:
Meant to catch you for a second the day I saw you at
the office, but forgot to say anything more than hello.
Re your letter of February 27th, and mine of March 6th,
it doesn't really appear that Fred and the State Central
Committee are going to have the money for me to do the
various projects we discussed.
This leaves me, at this time, uninvolved with any
specific campaign between now and June. Considering the
circumstances, and that I have 20 plus hours a week - actually
30-40, it would seem to me that I could be of some help
in the primary campaigns, let alone the full time efforts
in the summer through the November elections.
To remind you again, the Falk Fellowship, of $222 monthly
for 20 hours work, terminates in June. Above and beyond that,
it would appear that other requirements could be mutually
settled, depending on satisfaction with my work, etc.
I have mentioned certain aspects of this to various people,
and it would appear that, while I am available for working out
of southern california, I could probably be of even greater
assistance up there in the SF area, through Central Celifornia,
and other proximate areas, as I do have some contacts there,
and know mamy of the local problems.
Know that you're busy, and I hate to bother you, but - having
finished my last term - I'd really like the opportunity to
go to work on this campaign, in a full time capacity, as
soon as possible.
Thanks for your attention.

Dear Pete:
1 was very distressed when St. Patrick's
Day ran its full course without a peep of a Bagpipe -
or even a telephone call from you. But my grief was
completely assuaged by your letter of March 27th and,
most importantly, by its accompanyment.
You can continue, however, to enjoy the
thought of my searching for money, rather than spending
it lavishly, since I am doing far more of the former than
the latter at this stage.
John has not come across with the Shay's
$2,500 - but then, I haven't been able to set up a
luncheon he wanted me to work out with the old man -
so I guess it's my fault.
Do, by all means, continue to search for
this sort of material back there. It all helps.
Trust the Fianigan clan is in its usual
great shape, and that you will wend your way westward
before too long so that we can belatedly celebrate the
second anniversary of the infamous March 17th.

I fully recognize your problem regarding speakers and strongly
feel your thought of inviting Knowland is the best of all possibilities.
As far as your personal situation is concerned, I knew that Fred had
been trying to work out a plan for you in the northern part of the
state working with the State Central Committee. This would still be
the best place for you to fit in, and pending the outcome of current
negotiations with the Finance Committees here, it may still work out.

Compaign Manager
Nixon For Governor
Dear Bob:
Got your letter of the 8th, after Mary Ruth Lampe
forwarded it up here Tuesday. We've had to think a
little, and I tried to get you this morning - and Sandy,
since you were gone.
,Te are trying to avoid at all costs having the same
mess happen to us as happened to Pete Ashen. The guest
speakers are part of it. Both McCarthy and Cristopher,
plus a large group of other state wide campaigners will
be present. Ly problem is now, that Nixon can't come,
to avoid making this a Shell rally. I have no intention
of inviting him to fill in for the dinner. This invitation
was made by me before Dick Nixon became an official candidate
for governor. Shell is going to be unhappy, and there's
no question about that. Gaston is organizing (two we al-
ready have knowledge of) college clubs in LA county this
week. Shell's name at the last county (LA) meeting became
a symbol for applause. This I don't buy. We think Mary
Ruth may have invited 71im for Saturday lunch. I didn't,
and I'll invite someone else - like Busterud or Mulford -
or some congressional candidate like H. Allen Smith, or
George Ricci.
An alternative that I thought of last night - was
to invite Senator Knowland. We have a good. chance of
getting him, if some outside pressure was added. This
alternative would at least stop the LA people from making
charges, since I doubt that they would antagonize the
Senator (one of their charges against me at the YR conventin
was that I supported neither Nixon or Knowland!). Let
me know what you think about this as an alternative plan
of action.
Dob Hannon asked me to contact you re HII's speach
at Tule Lake. The people up there, having seen Bob's
picture with Nixon from Chicago, think they're good friends.
Bob thinks someone with the party better recognize him,
and I'm supposed to tell you that he's the young one "with
the black suit and crew cut" at the cocktail party. Hope
you can get that info to someone up there.
2
The third thing is not directly involved with the
above, but with me. You'll remember that when we spoke
a few weeks ago about 7271 working on the compaign, you
said to bring it up again after the 2nd of February, te
following the YR convention.
I didn't bring it up because things were sort of
rushed, and Fred Hafner had discussed something with ne.
This was to be out of the State Central Convittee, preferably,
and to do some work from Bakers field north. Supposedly,
this was to be integrated after the prinaries into the
Nixon campaign. At this point, Fred doesn't have the funds
available for this project, and I'd like to be put to
work as soon as possible. His ideas were good, though, and
while I was known as a Nixon supporter, I could be utilized
in this State Central Committee context because 'I TIXTS
good at walking this wire.
However, time is running out, and I may never find
out if they have sufficient funds. I'd like to go to
work, as I mentioned. Through the summer-July 1st, I get
200 dollars monthly (plus) for this Falk Fellouship, which
would mean 20-30 hours weekly for the Committee. I had
bold to Ed Slevin, and Fred, that if I got on C campaign,
I would spend more time, and be full time after June 7th.
Please let me hear from you about your suggestions.
If you would want ne to come down to LA, I would certainly
fly down to talk to you.

They say great minds run in the same channels, which
probably explains why your letter of February 26th
was received here the same day I was in San Francisco
meeting with Ken Favell. I had had a long discussion
with him on the telephone earlier, in fact, right after
you mentioned him to Dick, but this was our first
opportunity to sit down and go into things in detail.
After my long meeting with Favell, he had about an hour's
discussion with Dick, and I believe we have arrived at
some good starting points for developing a program here
in California. Ken feels the situation here is extremely
different from what you had in Michigan, but there are
still many things we can do to make some progress with
rank and file labor.
I certainly appreciate your writing and especially your
putting us in touch with Favell. Both Dick and I are
convinced he will be able to make a very substantial
contribution in terms of both guidance and actual work.
As we get some of his ideas pulled together and under way,
we will give you a report on progress.

desire to help, and we will contact him directly.

cordial invitation and is extremely sorry that a prior commitment
makes this impossible.

Dear Hugh:
Your memo to RN Staff of January 18th sets forth
five items: Compilation of a Fact Book on California;
Compilation of the Brown Book; Development of "Position
Papers"; Rundown of estimated "unregistered Republican
potential"; and RN speech data.
Can you give me an estimate of completion date
on these ?

Dear Arthur:
Thank you so much for the photograph.
And my apology for this delayed note. These
are busy days for all of us, and I seem to be
hopping from place to place.
Dick told me of his visit with you in
Portland. Needless to say, we are both
exceedingly grateful for your offer to be of
assistance. I appreciate too your kind words in
connection with my own activity.
It is good to know we can call on you,
and we will certainly do so if and when the need
arises.
Many thanks, and very best wishes.
Sincerely,
H. R. Haldeman

campaign manager.
Needless to say, we have a long and tough
campaign ahead of us, and it's going to require a tre-
mendous effort on the part of all of us who are involved.
Your good wishes are, therefore, greatly appreciated.
