INTER-OFFICE MEMORANDUM Nixon for Governor To: Bob Haldeman Date: May 4, 1962 From: RN Subject: Distribution: Loie Gaunt Paul Davies told me on the phone the other day he had gotten complaints from people saying they had re- ceived nice letters from Christopher thanking them for their contributions but had received none from us. Would you check and let me know what the trouble is. I think we need to write these people. However, if Maury Stans made the decision that we not write them let him talk to Paul Davies and explain it. Davies said that Milt Esberg is the one who has the names and addresses and if we are sending out any type letter I would like to have someone contact Esberg and see that the contributions from the people in the north are acknowledged. Box 6539 Los Angeles 55, California Dear Miss Gaunt: Attached is an up to date list of Northern California donors to the Nixon campaign whom Mr. Paul L. Davies, Chairman of the Northern California Committee, would like to receive letters of acknowledgment from Mr. Nixon. In accordance with instructions from Mr. Haldeman, we have deleted the amounts of the gifts but have asterisked in red those contributors of $1000 or more. Hereafter, at the beginning of each week, we will forward you a list of additional donors and addresses whose donat- ions were received the previous week so that they can likewise be the recipients of letters from Mr. Nixon. Enclosed is also a list of the members of the Northern California Finance Committee, which Mr. Haldeman requested we forward you to receive Nixon letters thanking them for their service in this capacity. Sincerely, Nancy O. Thompson Secretary to Mr. Esberg CC: Paul L. Davies H.R. Haldeman May 7, 1962 (Dict. 5/4) Mr. Milton H. Esberg, Jr. Consultants, Inc. 127 Montgomery Street San Francisco 4, California Dear Milt: I am leaving for the East Sunday, but I have just come across in my accumulated correspondence copy of Bob Haldeman's letter to you dated May 2nd regarding Dick Nixon acknowledging all contributions inexcess of $100, with special consideration to those over $1,000. The only further suggestion I would have would be that we furnish on the list the full name of the individual and perhaps Bob or someone on his staff can go over this and determine those individuals that Dick could call by first name in addressing the letter and have the letter started out such as, "Dear Dean" for Dean Witter, etc. I realize there will be a number that Dick would prob- ably know by first name if he saw them that he could not remember to address by first name and perhaps it might be better for you to underline those that should be addressed by first name. Probably Bob and you have more experience in how to work this out than I do, but I do know that if I received a letter from Dick Nixon addressed to "Dear Mr. Davies", it would probably hurt my feelings more than it would help my feelings with his thoughtfulness. This is just another problem for Bob and you to worry about. Warm regards. Truly yours, Paul L. Davies PLD:vp P.S. I will be in the East for the next two weeks but can be reached at our New York Offices, 161 East 42nd Street, c/o FMC Corporation. The telephone number is MUrray Hill 7-7400. cc: Mr. Arthur J. Dolan, Jr. Mr. H. R. Haldeman May 2, 1962 Dear Milt: Paul Davies has apparently expressed concern to RM regarding handling of acknowledgements of contributions. I would suggest sending a complete list of past contributors as well as all future. Mr. Esberg 2 May 2, 1962 Lois Gaunt should also have a complete and accurate list of members of the Northern California Finance Committee so that RN letters can be sent to them, thanking them for their service in this capacity. Best regards. Sincerely, M. R. Haldemen Mr. Milton H. Esberg, Jr. Consultants, Inc. 127 Montgomery Street San Francisco 4, California P.S. It is my understanding that we are planning an appearance in Alameda on the day of the Berkeley visit, now set for the 23rd. INTER-OFFICE MEMORANDUM Nixon for Governor To: H. R. Haldeman Date: May 1, 1962 From: Loie Gaunt fgg Subject: lists of contributors from the Northern California Finance Committee Distribution: How do we get tuned in with the Northern California Finance Committee to get accurate names and addresses regularly of contributors who should receive RN letters, albeit not direct acknowledgments of the contribution. If it is to be done like the are Southern California Finance Committee system, what we need to have X names and addresses of $100 and over contributors, with a special marking on those of $1,000 and more so that they will receive an autographed copy of RN's SIX CRISES. No amounts specifically should be shown. There have been a few Northern Californians on the lists that Lou Quinn has sent over, but not more than 5 or 6, sonture there must be a lot more than we don't know about. Two events led me to put the writing of this memo on the urgent burner: Paul Davies called RN, either today or yesterday; one of his "concerns" which he expressed to RN was George Chrisopher is acknowledging all the contributions he receives, why don't you? Carter Barber asked me for copies of my "contribution forms" yesterday after a telephone conversation with Milt Esberg, and sent them up to him. I would like to be sure Mr. Esberg knows and understands what we do and not do with forms, etc. If you want me to get into this and call someone to get system set up, fine, let me know. But since I know so little about how the Northern Finance committee is set up and operates, I wanted to get clearance and signals straight. If I just wait quietly until lists show up, that is equally as good better!! for your information, attached are wxat what I consider as contribution forms. Counsel RH Finch has said OK for RN to acknowledge along these lines. also, we should probably have a complete and accurate list of members of the Northern California Finance Committee so letters could go to all of them.
