Southern California Nixon Campaign Leadership
From: H. C. "Chad" McClellan, Southern California Campaign Chairman
Re:
Southern California Campaign Leadership Seminar
You are cordially invited and urged to attend a Southern
California Nixon Campaign Leadership Seminar to be held in the
Golden State Room of the Statler-Hilton Hotel in Downtown Los
Angeles on Saturday morning, September 8th. The meeting will begin
with breakfast at 8:00 a.m. and will be adjourned following lunch.
Highlight of the meeting, of course, will be a report by
Dick Nixon on his unique and exciting plans for the Fall campaign,
which will be "kicked-off" the following week. In addition, reports
will be given on campaign organization, publicity, advertising,
finance, and other activities all directed towards assuring an over-
whelming victory on November 6th.
Each Division and Community Chairman receiving this memo of
invitation is urged to bring his or her finance chairman or his re-
presentative to this important meeting. And care should be taken
to record the name of such chairman or representative on the return
reservation slip enclosed.
I hope you will make every effort to participate in this im-
portant conference. It will be our last chance to bring the entire
Southern California Nixon leadership together before we hit the
campaign trail that leads to Dick's election as Governor of the
Nation's Number One State.
Please fill out and return the enclosed reservation slip in-
dicating whether or not you and your finance chairman (or represen-
tative) will be able to be present on September 8th. We would appre-
ciate your enclosing your check for the proper amount in the return
envelope provided as soon as possible.

Mr. Ben Roth (who came in with Dr. McBirnie) called on August
14 and said he had been at Knott's Berry Farm the week before and had
lunch with Walter Knott. He suggested that the should put in a call to RN
and get to work -- Walter Knott said "I have written to Dick -- he knows
where I am he can call me if he wants me to go to work for him. n
He also was concerned about the paper out there -- he says that
all of the men who are with Walter' Free Enterprise Institute want to be
with RN -- they want to work to get these conservatives in line so they
can get out and work for Nixon and do it effectively.
Roth said he knows if RN gets everv Repubtican vote in the State he
can lose by a large majority but he wants to be sure that we get those
votes and he thinks if we could get some other people working on those

Dear Mr.
Some months ago, the Citizens Committee for Voluntary
Unionism started a "grass roots" educational program in
California to point out the evils that have resulted
from compulsory unionism; and the serious threat to the
continuation of our way of life if the monopolistic powers
nov possessed by big labor unions are not checked.
It is not necessary to recite details. The sordid events
that have come to light during the McClellan Committee
hearings tell the story with sufficient eloquence.
Petitions are now being circulated to qualify an initiative

Operation of Unemployment Insurance Administration
Dear Chad:
Thanks very much for your memo of July 9th with
attached file.
Interestingly enough, I also have a letter from
a Mr. John W. Davis, President of Imperial Industries, who
compiled a file of his own on this subject which included
memoranda over the signature of Mr. J. R. Glade.
This certainly could be a target. Any additional
material you are able to pull in would be appreciated.
This sort of thing is turned over to our Research
Department for study, correlation and incorporation into
speeches, releases and attack statements. The data which
you have sent is being passed along to them today.

Dear Chad -
Just to report, I am asking Carol Arth to follow through and talk
to Mrs. Florence Kenny. Her background is of course outstanding,
and if something can be worked out, we will certainly do it.
Marguerite Wilson, who also contacted you, has had visits here at
the office with both Carol Arth and Yvonne Smith. She is still
seeking an appointment with me and I try to work this in; however,
I'm afraid we just don't have a position suitable to her background
and qualifications. Copy of my letter is attached for your information.

Dear Chad:
The attached was directed here, and is forwarded for your reply.
The run-down, for your information:
Davidge was contacted about the building three
weeks ago, but apparently the contact between
him and the Sandviks was never established.
They are now working together, the Sandviks
are using the old sign, and it is going up.
Yvonne Smith of our staff was the contact with
the Sandviks. She has also talked with Davidge.
Her most recent conversation was with Mrs. Sandvik,
andshe covered the building-sign set-up as well as
other general area matters.
We have written the Sandviks from time to time,
acknowledging the Piedge of Support sheets they
have sent in. Copy of my letter confirming
what Miss Smith has done is attached for your
information.
To help reply to their first paragraph, second page
of their letter, we have pulled the last two lists
sent in and fax copies are attached which you can send
them.

Dear Mr. McClellan:
Copy of your January 18th letter to
Chad McClellan and his reply have just been sent over to
me by his office.
The speaking schedule is getting down
to firm commitments for March, and I note you have an
inquiry from the Burlingame Chamber of Commerce as to
steps to follow.
Please have them address a letter to
me, at the above address, setting forth the details. Our
procedure is to get the invitations into the hands of the Schedule
Committee promptly and then come back with an answer.
A1 requests must clear through this
set-up, so that your question about getting in touch with
someone in Northern California and handling it there would
only delay action.
Please let me know If we can be of further
help. I have flagged this interchange for our Schedule
Secretary so that when the invitation is received, she will be
familiar with the background.
Kind regards.

Dear Chad:
This is to confirm information given Herb Kalmbach on the
telephone Tuesday.
During his visit to San Diego on Tuesday, Dick had a private
session with C. Arnholt Smith and Admiral Les Gehres and a man
whose name, I believe, is Breitbard.
As a result of this session and an earlier conversation with
Mr. Parkinson (Chairman of Republican Associates). It was agreed
that Gehres would serve 23 San Diego County Chairman, Smith as
Finance Chairman, and Broitbard as Treasurer.
I talked with Gehres Wednesday and it has been agreed between
us that no announcement will be made for a short while since Gehres
wishes to firm up organization structure and procedure in advance
of such announcement.
I am asking Charlie Farrington, by copy of this memorandum, to
have the News Bureau obtain complete biographical date on these
gentlemen pending preparation of the announcement.

Dear Chad:
I am delighted that you are the over-all chairman of
the Nixon for Governor campaign and that Bob Finch will
assist. From past experience I believe that it is of the
utmost importance that arrangements be made which will
hold campaign expenses to anticipated campaign receipts.
This year due to the confused politics in Los Angeles
County it is going to be difficult to secure as much
money as the campaign managers will wish to spend.
We have made arrangements to open a finance office
in the National 011 Building under the management of
Mrs. Opper. This office will be in rooms 414 and 415.
Bob White of Price, Waterhouse is our treasurer and Bob
Haldeman is campaign manager. I have been acting as
temporary chairman. Wednesday I leave for New York
and will return on the 24th. In the meantime, please
review in your mind the best method of control of
expenses.
