Martin says someone should talk to him - get things straightened out. him talk when July is Sandy Le's new par what about a INTER-OFFICE MEMORANDUM Nixon for Governor Spencer To: BYS HALDWHAN Date: July 17, 1962 From: BILL SPENCER In spite of Freys note I Weinberger should contact - him & J think Orick, martin or Don Frey ask for help get reading X Have you done anything about asking Bob NoCarthy w give - us line up for Nixon? Jack McCarthy's only comment was that see. as AD we should ask him. whether What avenue do you suggest if nothing has been done? RUshould Should RN call? call hin I an sending a copy of this to Den Frey who may know the status of the situation. H WMS The last time (there have been others) I went pubcrawling iwth the Brothers McCarthy was just before the Primary. There was no evidence then of any willingness on Bob's part to come all the way over, despite his disenchantment with Brown. He's the kind of a any who might be persuaded if we were runding a New York or New Jersey type Republican Party--but he sure couldn't find many oul mates as things stand now. Hes best het right now is to salvage something out of the wreckage of the Demos after Lovember. T think he's going to play it ccol. def RN 5-2-62 Bob Haldeman Per your request, I asked Waller Taylor to call Jack McCarthy regarding McCarthy's X X I reported remarks at Salinas. Waller did so -- and reports that McCarthy said he neither feels that your defeat would date lead to the revival of the Republican Party in this Mc (McCarthy) File: RN memo file state, nor has he ever said this. He further said he has more intelligence than to pick Salinas as the locale for such a remark - if he did decide to make it - but he won't. BH SANFORD WEINER COMPANY MEMO ADVERTISING / PUBLIC RELATIONS 9879 Santa Monica Boulevard Beverly Hills, California BRadshaw 2-0536 CRestview 6-6297 TO Bob FROM Sandy SUBJECT DAE/26 For your information DW hold Wineis callaig this back on (Appeared in San Jose Mercury - 4/24/62) McCARTHY BLASTS CHRISTOPHER Salinas State Senator John F. McCarthy (Republican-San Rafael) Monday tore into his opposition for the nomination as Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor, predicting he'll beat Mayor George Christopher of San Francisco. "The Mayor was once a Democrat, then a Progressive, then a Democrat again. Now he's a Republican," McCarthy said. "What is he going to be tomorrow?" McCarthy charged Christopher "has had no experience in state government. " McCarthy then lashed out at the Democrat hopeful, incumbent Lieutenant Governor Glenn Anderson. "He's just hanging onto the coat-tails of Governor Brown as Christopher is hanging onto the coat-tails of Nixon." McCarthy said that a split of party vote might result in Brown retaining the Governorship while he (McCarthy) won the Lieutenant Governorship. McCarthy said defeat of Nixon could lead to the revival of Republican party strength in the state. * * *
