Dear Mr. Schols:
Dick Nixon has asked me to express his thanks
for your thoughtfulness in writing him about the Testimonial Dinner
planned for gubernatorial candidate, Newman Marsilius.
As in many other instances, firm policy rulings
must be made and strictly followed, in fairness to all concerned.

In this case, the policy is that there will be no involvement in
out-of-state campaigns, which of course precludes sending the
requested message to Mr. Marsilius on April 30th.

Dear Ralph:
As I am sure you know, Dick is addressing the California Hereford
Association in Fresno on May 18th.
I had a conversation with Dan Phoraton, former Governor of
Colorado, regarding He recommends that we get
in touch with James G. Sanders in Gilroy to suggest that he head
up a "Stockmen for Nixon" group. This, it seems to me, could
come under the overall blanket of "Farmers for Nixom", but perhaps
as a somewhat separate operation.
I don't know whether you know Sanders -- 1 de net. Thoraton tells
me be is a highly successful stockman, both in cattle and sheep.
He is a member of the Boards of Directors of all the important stock
associations, and is considered the outstanding Hereford judge in
the world. He is an ardent Republican from Mebraska and,
according to Thoraton, strongly pro-Mixon. He is General Chairman
of the Fresno meeting, only 36 years old and apparently quite dynamic.
He is, I believe, General Manager of Eugene Selvage's agricultural
interests. Selvage, as you know, is head of Lucky Lager.
Sanders can be reached at The Lucky Hereford Ranch, Gilrey,
telephone - VI 2-4022. Do you want to contact him regarding the
possibility of setting up a "Stockmen for Nixon" unit, or would you
suggest some other approach?
Best regards.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Sandvik:
I enjoyed hearing from you very much and I
am pleased with the very fine work you are doing in the
Santa Ynes Valley.
Hearing about people such as yourselves really
makes politics a pleasure for me, and I an sure that I
speak for Mr. Nixon as well. Across country it was
wonderful meeting people, like yourselves, who were in-
terested in bettering government without seeking some-
thing for themselves.
I would be glad to try to arrange a visit
with you--and a speech, too, if you like-sometime in
May. During April, however, I would be unable to
schedule anything along that line inasmuch as 1 will be
making a trip to the East coast. If you would be good
enough to contact me in the latter part of April or the
early part of May, I will be glad to check on my
schedule at that time.
Again, my best wishes for your very fine
endeavors.
Sincerely,
Herbert G. Klein

possible for me to do so, since I am following the policy
in this campaign, just as I have done in the past during
those periods when I have been a candidate, of not accepting
any sponsorship invitations. In view of the number of similar
requests I receive, this has seemed to me to be the only wise
and consistent course of action to follow, even in cases like
this one which I would particularly like to be able to honor.
I hope you will understand and agree with my position.

This is to remind you to ask Senator Kuchel and Richard
Nixon to grant permission to use their names as sponsors for
the "Town
Meeting for Democracy.' Senators Case (R) of
New Jersey and McCarthy (D) of Minnesota will be the speakers.
The meeting will be held on April 12th at the Shrine Auditorium.
Others have been asked to make similar requests of Pat Brown
and Dick Richards. Names will be used only if the opposing
candidates also grant permission to use their names.
I would also like permission to turn in your name.
Further, please give some thought how we can get other Repub-

I am enclosing several copies of the text of the state-

We need these names as quickly as possible.

Dear Norm:
Your "autographed copy of a good, live author whom
I admire" will be on its way shortly.
However, your check was not acceptable and is
being returned herewith since it is the
author's desire to present you with a compli-
mentary copy.
Things are going very well, although we never
seem to get out of the hectic stage. As you have
undoubtedly noted from the press, our Republican
opposition has diminished in number, but the re-
maining member has become somewhat more
vociferous. The outlook for the Primary remains
excellent, and for November - good, but with a
tough fight.
Dick very much appreciated your interest in his
book, and your copy should be in your hands soon.
Best regards.

Many thanks for your letter of February 14th. Your
reports are always appreciated.
That is fine about the building and the sign. You certainly
have gone right to work.
Please express our appreciation to Mr. Brand for the
spotlight he is arranging for the sign, and to Oscar Lindberg
for making it. Our thanks too to Hans Skytt for his
donation of the building dividers.
You are fortunate to have secured someone like Mrs. Clegg
as Secretary-Treasurer.
Material should be available in about three weeks, and I
suggest you check with your County Headquarters on this.
We are trying to find out whether a transcript of the Jack Paar
show can be made available, but to answer your question now,
we do not have it. Glad to have your comment on the show. We
have been receiving enthusiastic reactions generally and all agree
it was a great thing.
Congratulations on the Pledge of Support sheets. Keep them
coming, and thanks again for your loyal and effective cooperation
and help.

February 14, 1962
Dear Mr. Haldeman:
Thank you for your letter of February 5th. Following Miss
Smith's phone call "to go ahead" we have talked with Mr. and Mrs. Davidge.
Mrs. Davidge, the owner of the building in question has, given the use of it
as a Nixon-for-Governor headquarters - subject, of course, to possible sale
or rental. And she has promised to help, unless she is away from the valley.
Yesterday, Uno spoke with Richard Brand, Manager of the Solvang
Electric Co. about a spot light for the sign. Oscar Lindberg will make the
sign. Hans Skytt of the Skytt Lumber Company will donate plywood for dividers
of the large room, as he did in '60 (loaning the sheets of plywood). All are
Republicans. And they are supporting Dick Nixon.
Mrs. Cecil Clegg, widow of a former Federal Judge of Alaska, and
for years Treasurer of the Solvang Women's Club, has agreed to act as Secretary
and Treasurer - and she couldn't be better.
Florence will organize a staff as she did last year of loyal
Nixon workers. We have some material left from the '60 election but when
we are established could use circulars, writing paper, and anything that you
wish to have distributed.
And Uno is working on the pledge sheets *1 has almost completed
his 9th.
Have you a tape recording of Mr. Nixon's appearance on the
Jack Paar Show? We meant to make one and now are sorry that we didn't for it
was a great success. We hear the word "wonderful", enthusiastically spoken by
unrelated groups, here, Los Alamos, Santa Maria, and Santa Barbara. Unanimous.
We are very anxious to have Mr. and Mrs. Nixon and their
daughters here - some week end? We will write more about this and about some
ideas that are in mind. We know the people here very well - and we know what
they are like in other parts of California. But more of that later.
Sincerely,
Um Florance Sandirk

speaking date Mr. Nixon would definitely like to do, your letter

invitation, it will not be possible.

and again, thank you for your thoughtfulness in writing.

Many thanks for your kind invitation to Dick Nixon to

certainly sounds like a fine affair, but much as he would
like to have the opportunity to meet with your organization

to commit a May date for Mr. Nixon.
You can be sure, however, that it is his intention to cover
all areas of California intensively during the course of the

a visit to the Diablo Valley area can be worked out.
Again, we appreciate your thoughtful invitation for May 19th.

Dear Chad:
The attached was directed here, and is forwarded for your reply.
The run-down, for your information:
Davidge was contacted about the building three
weeks ago, but apparently the contact between
him and the Sandviks was never established.
They are now working together, the Sandviks
are using the old sign, and it is going up.
Yvonne Smith of our staff was the contact with
the Sandviks. She has also talked with Davidge.
Her most recent conversation was with Mrs. Sandvik,
and she covered the building-sign set-up as well as
other general area matters.
We have written the Sandviks from time to time,
acknowledging the Pledge of Support sheets they
have sent in. Copy of my letter confirming
what Miss Smith has done is attached for your
information.
To help reply to their first paragraph, second page
of their letter, we have pulled the last two lists
sent in and fax copies are attached which you can send
them.

January 2, 1962
Dear Mr. Haldeman:
At this point, we believe a report from our area will be in
order:
Incidentally, Solvang, preponderant with Democrats, should not
alone be thought the most important spoke in our valley Republican wheel.
But its potentialities of a broader scope are great - and have never been
fully utilized. Thousands of visitors come there from all over the State
and everywhere. They browse about the many gift shops - and enrich the
Danish bakers. Solvang now has seven motels, with two more in prospect,
where a quiet "nite's" rest may be had only a few minutes away from noisy
Hwy 101. ,Southlanders come up for week ends to play on the 18 hole Alisal
golf course. When you come this way, we can explain to you the possibilities
better in an interview than in writing.
Politically, our valley population, now about 7000, was fairly
equally divided between the two parties until the Vandenberg development
brought in more Democrats - not, however, creating drastic changes as in
neighboring Lompoc and Santa Maria.
In a previous letter, we wrote about what seemed to be an under-
the-surface Shell movement since his visit here last summer. This is now
coming out in the open. The chairman of a "political discussion group"
- open meetings in our Ballard red school house with an average audience of
40-50 of leading citizens - is supporting Mr. Shell. The President of the
valley Republican women is supporting Mr. Shell. We understand that William
McKillop, running as an announced Conservative in the race for the State
Senate seat of the late Senator Hollister, and his campaign manager, Robert
Herdman, are for Shell. Bob Herdman, whom we know very well, has plenty of
time and a lot of drive. After next month's election, it is not unreasonable
to foresee that they will try to swing their going McKillop organization into
action for Shell. This they will not be able to do completely. Unfortunately,
Shell votes will be lost to Mr. Nixon - not to Mr. Knight.
The object of this letter is to urge very earnestly that Mr. G.
Gifford Davidge be contacted at once concerning the use of his empty building
on Mission Drive, Solvang, Route 150, that he generously donated the use of
in the last months of the '60 campaign. Florence says that if she were Bob
Herdman (for Shell), she would lose no time in seeing Mr. Davidge for Bob
well knows how valuable was that sign - he helped to put it up. Let us hope that
he will be so busy arranging dates for Bill McKillop that this will slip his
mind. It would be too bad to have a "Shell-for-Governor" sign there! But
time is of the essence.
Otherwise, Uno has about completed his sixth sheet of Nixon
pledges and is about to begin on his seventh. It is a true grass roots list
with all groups represented. As everyone knows, Uno gets around.
Very sincerely,
lino Form Sandirk
