Wednesday, August 08, 2007 Page 4 of 4 John Ehrlichman 10-1-62 Dorothy Wright John - Gladys O'Donnell called me this morning about a couple of matters, one of which I am referring to you herewith: She said she had spoken to Rose about this -- but was wondering what if anything had been done as follow-up. It seems a fellow by the name of Glenn Purvine is ready, willing and able to donate his car, tape recorder and loud-speaker to travel statewide -- either preceding or with the candidate's party -- providing the hoopla etc. Gladys wants to be sure we know of this offer and that it does not go unacknowledged. Could you have someone either write or call Mr. Purvine? Mr. Glenn Purvine 112 Loma Avenue Long Beach 3 GEneva 9-4596 - and Gladys will appreciate being advised when the needful has been done; apparently Purvine keeps calling her. - many thanks. A Nick Ruwe 9-22-62 Bob Haldeman At the Pomona Rally, Don Nixon says that Mr. Frank Urich (spelling?), who is an auto dealer in Whittier, told him that Dick Nixon had always used one of of the cars he (Urich) loaned him in each of his campaigns. This custom was not followed in 1960, and Urich is convinced this is why Nixon did not win. He very much wants Nixon to use one of his cars in this campaign to assure victory. Will you please follow-up with Urich and please do it yourself. Tell him Dick asked you to see if we could borrow a car from him for some of our campaigning, etc. etc. Joe Agnello September 24, 1962 Charlie Farrington Fred Naify Bob HEldeman file Rose Mary Woods has advised us that Fred Naify, 1531 7th Avenue, Sacramento -- GI 2-6237 -- has volunteered to run any campaign film which will help RN, at no cost to us. He owns a chain of theaters in and around Sacramento. Inasmuch as I am sure this is in your area, I am passing it to your good hands with the confidence that you will follow through immediately to acknowledge the offer and take advantage of it in October when we have ample film of the type we would like to have used. INTER-OFFICE MEMORANDUM Nixon for Governor To: Date: Bob Haldeman September 10, 1962 From: Rose Mary Woods Subject: Distribution: I am quoting below a paragraph from a letter I received from Bob Newbrand (Secret Service agent) the other day. "I'm sending the name of a fellow who runs (owns) a chain of theaters in and around Sacramento. He has volunteered to run any campaign film that will help the Boss at no cost. I'm sure he doean't want anything as he just has good sense. Anyway here it is: Fred Naify, 1531 Seventh Avenue, Sacramento -- Phone - Gllbert 2-6237. " Would you be good enough to have someone follow up with this fellow. Also, in the event we should ever want him to do anything for us -- Bob also said if there was anything he could do for the Boss we should not fail to let him know. 9/10 OF sure 100 3 is 32 s/o₂ 5. to adv. The list consists of all Retail Beverage License holders in the state, approximately 40,000 names. In our opinion these owners who have contact with hundreds of thousands of voters might be a means of securing many votes for Mr. Nixon. If your interested please have your secretary call me at UN 3-1300 and I will be glad to come right over to headquarters and discuss costs to mail a letter and or other literature to these people. September 5, 1962 Dear Mr. Kippen: Thanks very much indeed for acquainting us with your letter service. We certainly recognize the value of an "individually typed letter" and are glad to know of the services your are equipped to perform. Cap Weinberger may have mentioned to you that we have a service which has proved to be exceptionally fine in quality and quantity and is working closely with our organization in the current campaign. At this time, I do not know whether the needs of the Northern California organization would require a service on the spot, but certainly we will keep it in mind. Should the occasion arise where the facilities of your company can be used, we will contact you immediately. I am sending our correspondence along to Mr. Ed Slevin in our San Francisco office who is the administrative director of our Northern California operations. Many thanks for your interest, and kind regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman Mr. Jim W. I would assume that "individually typed letter work" the likes of which we do on automatic typewriters would be produced for Southern California in Los Angeles, and for Northern California in San Francisco. My entire letter shop operation (personal letters) is ready and waiting to produce thousands upon thousands of fund raising and vote getting letters for Mr. Nixon if we are asked to do SO. And I fervently hope we are! You're for the Dodgers and I'm for the Giants, but beyond this disagreement our thoughts and wishes are the same. We must do the best we can for Dick Nixon. We are equipped to handle 1000 letters per day and when it comes to fund raising, I'm a strong advocate of the "carbon copy follow up" to be mailed 10 days following the original letter. It is mailed, of course, only to those who have not responded to the first letter. I have been in touch with Cap, and Downey Orrick, Alan Nichols and Wm. Spencer here, but according to Cap, you, Mr. Haldeman, are the man who holds the key as to when, where and how, we shall produce the letters that will defeat the Brown regime. I shall appreciate very much hearing from you and I would like to know if my letter service can perform a service for Mr. Nixon. Very sincerely, Jun Kippen all Jim W. RHF 7-21-62 Bob Haldeman Sail A preliminary investigation indicates United Airlines' Convair "Fresno", the plane RN used extensively in the Presidential campaign, which was Patterson's private plane, is not in use at this time and is, in fact, up for sale. It would be extremely desirable if we could get this plane for full time use during the fall campaign. I talked to Don Hughes and he said arrangements in '60 were made directly by Cliff Folger with Patterson. Could Folger again contact him to see if this plane could be based through November in Los Angeles and available to us for campaign use, as needed? We will not need it full time, but should have full time access to it. I assume UAL would put a crew on. Another alternative, however, is that we have some volunteer pilots available. They are all commercial airlines pilots who have volunteered their off duty time to the campaign. If UAL would make the "Fresno" available at little or not charge, maybe Charlie Jones could supply the gasoline. In any event, could Cliff make the first contact and see if there is a chance of getting the plane? This should be done quickly since if we can't get the "Fresno", we must arrange for some other plane. INTER-OFFICE MEMORANDUM Nixon for Governor To: Sandy Quinn Date: August 4, 1962 From: Loie Gaunt Subject: Tape Recorder 1 Distribution: Bob Haldeman Re: your memo yes, we have a portable unit, a Minitape Recorder/ Producer, manufactured locally by The Stancil-Hoffman Corporation. Understand it has worked satisfactorily in the past for purposes you have in mind, particularly since it operates on a battery system, for period up to 2-1 hours when fully charged in between times. It has not been used for a year and a half, but Chuck Brammer ran it thru a 16-hour, complete recharging process yesterday, and it seems to be A-OK today for both recording and playback. Am sending along the instruction manual, which, at least from my point of view, is quite complicated, and also some typed non- technical instructions which Chuck Brammer worked up after spending some time with the equipment in the recharging and checking process. As far as the equipment itself is concerned, what we are sending is: the recorder/reproducer unit the battery charger unit microphone with 6' cord and connector remote control loud speaker and power amplifier if needs servicing, or any other problem with it, you should contact the manufacturers -- The Stancil-Hoffman Corporation 921 North Highland Avenue Hollywood 38, California HOllywood 4-7461 for the record, should be noted this is property of RN, for eventual return to him.
