Re: Phil Thomas
- he called again this morning
- per your instructions, I explained the situation --
we could cover his expenses -- but there would be no
other compensation; he said this confirmed what Herb
had told him.
- in view of this -- and the improbability of any money
being released - he feels he should not quit his job
with Jeffries Banknote.
- I assured him you and Herb would understand and agree;
- he did say Jeffries had indicated they might release him
for a few days at a time
and I said by all means to
keep in touch with Herb -- and should he have some days when
he could get away, to let Herb know.

INTER-OFFICE MEMORANDUM
Nixon for Governor
DW
To:
Dorothy Wright
Date: July 9, 1962
From:
Loie Gaunt
Subject:
attached copy of letter concerning Wilma Thomas
you
Distribution:
attached is self-explanatory, and of possible info interest to you and HRH.
Evidently Wilma is starting to job-hunt and asked for letter of this nature
via Doris Jones.
June 28, 1962
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Miss Wilms C. Thomas was employed as a
member of my staff in a secretarial capacity from
Thomas, Wilma C.
May 1961 until April 1962, at which time political
experience became a requisite for secretarial and
other staff positions.
During the period of her employment, Miss
Thomas' work performance was entirely satisfactory.
Her technical skills were good, she applied herself
diligently, she was dependable, and she handled
incoming telephone calls with tact and courtesy.

I would not hesitate to recommend Mas
Thomas for 4 position calling for these skills and
traits.

Dear Senator Thompson:
Howard Thelin has been kind enough to show me
copies of his recent interchange with you.
We certainly appreciate your comments. We need
your support and it was heartening to learn you
are interested in helping out in the months ahead.
I am asking our Northern California Campaign Manager,
Mr. Bill Spencer, to get in touch with you and
discuss current status and projected planning for
Santa Clara County.
You may be sure anything you are free to do will
mean much to us.
Kindest regards and best wishes.
Sincerely,
H. R. Haldeman

Dear Al:
I appreciate your annoyance and concern about the fact
Mr. Mixon did not clarify the necessity of ballots being
stamped with the rubber stamp after writing in the name.
While I am sure you felt this was extremely important, I
might point out that the Los Angeles Registrar of Voters
has made it very clear that it is not necessary to stamp
X
the X after writing in a name. If any X is used, it must
X 0

be rubber stamped, but simply writing the name in is
sufficient. Because of the complicated technicalities in-
volved in this process, it was felt advisable not to confuse
L
the TV viewers further.

I can assure you we do not have sabotage within our own ranks.
All suggestions are given careful consideration, but some-
times they can't all be followed.
We appreciate your interest and good work, and are especially
counting on you in the crucial campaign ahead.

Dear Howard:
Many thanks for your letter regarding John Newman.
You should know that Mr. Newman was in a meeting with
RN held several weeks ago, along with several other top
agricultural leaders. It is my understanding, however,
that he has decided not to work actively or directly with us,
at least at this point in the campaign.
You should also know that a "Farmers for Nixon" Committee
has been set up on a Statewide basis with offices in
Modesto. They have retained the professional services of
Ross Wurm and Associates, the Public Relations firm
handling the Veneman campaign. They are actively
engaged in contacting farmers throughout the State and
organizing them into an effective Nixon team. This program
has not yet been publicly announced, but will be shortly.
Thanks for keeping us posted, and best regards.
Sincerely,
H. R. Haldeman

Dear Bob:
Recently, a friend of mine who knows a Republican
political leader in northern California said to me that his
friend in northern California had suggested that a Mr. John
B. Newman in Ventura County would be an excellent person to
have in the Nixon organization. Newman is a farm leader in
Ventura County and was one of the members of the Agriculture
Board that carried on the feud with Governor Brown over re-
organization and subsequently was not reappointed to the
Agriculture Board as a result. I have also checked with
Senator Lagomarsino of Ventura County and he says that Newman
would be an excellent man although that he does not feel that
he would make a good county chairman because he is an extremely
opinionated person. I thought I should, therefore, pass on
his name to you for whatever benefit it might have.
Kindest personal regards,
Howard Cordially yours,

A few weeks ago, a Mr. Bob Gibson was referred
to us by Waller Taylor.
Gibson is a young attorney, very anxious to help
out in the campaign, and last Saturday came by the
X
office. I had a rather lengthy visit with him and
found out his special interest is in the Latin-American
program.
date X
I think it would be helpful if you would
give Mr. Gibson a call. It might be well for you to
meet with him, and possibly include Mike Mavarro and the
professor you mentioned who has been doing an analysis of
the Mexican-American vote.
As you know, we are concentrating now on the Republican
vote turnout for the primary. However, this Mexican-American
program should get under way right after June 5th.

Meantime, I would appreciate your calling Mr. Gibson
at MA 9-1231 and perhaps getting together with him to
discuss our current thinking and future planning.
Many thanks.

Dear Mr. Townsend:
I very much appreciate your recent letter indicating that
you are available to participate in our compaign organization.
We have net intended to designate an Advisor on Minorities,
as such, in the campaign organization. We do, of course,
recognise the tremendous importance of the minerity groups
and the necessity of our working closely with them. I am
sure by now you have read the article by Simeen Becker in
the current issue of Ebomy Magazine which clearly outlines
Dick's feelings in this regard, and which I certainly share.
As you undoubtodly know, Crispus A. Wright has agreed to
