Tried to reach you one evening last week, but apparently was too late - the number did not answer. Just received your October 23rd letter and attached check for $260.00 covering the contributors and amounts as listed. The check will be processed immediately, and the acknowledgments will go out. Our thanks for your "Cincinnati Operation", Sherm. It means much. These are busy days, but with the sweet smell of success in our nostrils, they are happy days. Best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman Mr. Sherman Unger National Republican Congressional Committee Congressional Hotel Washington 3, D. C. August 3, 1962 Dear Sherm: Sorry to have missed your calls. I am leaving for Sacramento, but wanted to fill you in on the Whitaker situation. As John may have told you, I talked with him about the possibility of his getting into our campaign. He feels the only way he could get into any campaign is if we could get him sprung by his company. Naturally, if we are able to work this out through the parent company, it will be on the basis of his coming to California to work in the Nixon campaign. Apparently if we are not able to work it out on this basis, John doesn't feel he will be able to get into any full-time campaign spot. I am sure John will keep you posted on future developments. Best regards. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman Mr. Sherman E. Unger Republican Congressional Campaign Committee Congressional Hotel Washington, D. C. August 3, 1962 Dear Mr. Scull: I have your letter of July 11th to Dick Nixon regarding John Whitaker. Interestingly enough, I have been in touch with John regarding his possible participation in the California campaign, and the situation boils down to this. John is very anxious to come out here and work with us if we are able to arrange a leave of absence for him with his company. He would not be available to work in the Maryland campaign or with the Congressional Campaign Committee, who are also after him, unless he could get this leave of absence. The only way he feels he would be able to get it is through us out here. I am exploring this now with his parent company, but it looks as if he will end up either working in the California campaign or not getting into any full- time spot this year. I am sorry not to be able to give you more help. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman Mr. David Scull, Chairman Republican State Central Committee 1020 Fidelity Building Baltimore 1, Maryland Emily Pike 5-14-62 Bob Haldeman Dear Emily: Bob Finch advises there is nothing in violation of Article IV, Section 19 of the State Constitution insofar as the Unruh European trip is con- X cerned. This refers back to your memo and your conversation with Deputy City Attorney Desky in this connection. X date I Have just read copy of your letter to U (Unruh) Carter Barber reporting on Brown's appearance at the South San Francisco High School. This is interesting indeed. I trust we are also doing a good advance job for RN's May 24th appearance. File: No. Calif. - Emily Pike memo file From the desk of ROBERT H. FINCH Bob: A check by our firm indicates there is nothing in violation of Article IV, Section 19 of the California Constitution or any other penal or civil statute. RHF Evily Pike send note to INTER-OFFICE MEMORANDUM Nixon for Governor To: Bob Finch Date: 4-23-62 From: Bob Haldeman Subject: Distribution: Emily Pike sent the attached clippings concerning the European trip by Jesse Unruh and several other legislators. She says Robert Desky, Deputy City Attorney in San Francisco, has suggested that you might check out the application of Article 1V, Section 19 of the State Constitution. Desky felt there might be something here illegal that could be used. H. Emily Trust when are doing May 12, 1962 Mr. Carter Barber Broth Research Bureau Nixon Headquarters 3908 Wilshire Boulevard Los Angeles, California Dear Mr. Barber: In preparation for Mr. Nixon's appearance at the South San Francisco High School on May 24th, I thought a report from one of our observers might be of interest Governor Brown spoke to this group this past week). Brown was expected to enter from the side room directly onto the auditorium stage - instead after arriving he came in the auditorium front door and walked down the aisle to the stage. This caused excitement and a standing ovation. 1800 students attended and there were many adults from the surrounding area in the audience. Brown discussed summer employment for students, his own educational back- ground, cited the high drop-outs from high schools and urged students to complete high school education and go on to college, talked about being a yell leader himself in school, and generally kept his talk in & light vein. Mrs. Brown accompanied him and also spoke - told about meeting her husband when they were in high school together. There were questions from the audience - the only which received the most applause was his reply to a question on the Francis Amendment - said he was against 1t, we have the FBI to do that sort of thing that it was "silly". The school presented Governor Brown with a report card giving him a A in everything except physical education because he is overweight. Someone from Brown's staff had been there in advance and set up the arrangements, including the school band meeting him out front on arrival - which gave color to the whole proceedings. Sincerely, CC: H R Haldeman Emily Pike W Spencer March 5, 1962 Dear Joe: It is my understanding you are going to follow-up on getting Henry Untermeyer active in the campaign.
