Dear John:
The piece of paper enclosed
with your October 24th letter was
most gratefully received, badly needed,
and I can assure you will be put to
fast and effective use these few
remaining days of the campaign.
We too were sorry things did
not jell, and the leave of absence could
not be arranged.
Somehow, despite the hurdles,
the hurlers, and the harried, we are
living out this last week in high spirits
with sure knowledge we're 7 days away
from victory.
Many thanks, John, for your
substantial help.

Dear Bob and Jo:
Not being a part of your campaign disturbs
me greatly. Cliff Folger and I did everything possible
to arrange a leave of absence, but we failed. Put this
contribution to any use you see fit, Bob, to further
R. N.'s cause; and most important, don't stop to acknow-
ledge this gift--keep charging.
Tell John Erlichman that on the eve of trial,
I settled Mr. Thompson's caveat for 50% of the net es-
tate. I shall write him further regarding the details.
Good luck!
Sincerely,
hohn

Enclosed is another check that I collected
this morning. Mr. Sidney Stern is the contribu-
tor. He is President of the Fireside Thrift and

wanted us to know how much he supported Nixon and
the cause of good government generally. I am
glad to see he is backing up his beliefs more
than most people. I assume that your letter will

Dear Cap:
Just a brief note to acknowledge your October 23rd
letter.
Many thanks for sending along the check for $250.00
from Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cohn. This will be put through
for processing and acknowledgment immediately.
I have referred the two individuals who want to help
to John Kalmbach who will contact them and try to get
them active during these last few days.
I'm afraid the Los Angeles College visit is out of the
question. The schedule is full, and then some.
Nonetheless, we appreciate Mr. Reese's suggestion.
Many thanks and best regards.

Dear Bob:
Enclosed is a check from Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Cohn for the Nixon Committee in the amount of
$250.
Mr. Cohn (he calls himself "Bobby") has been
active in something called the "Western Outdoor
Shows", a group that puts on carnivals, etc. at
various Fairs. He reported that he was unable
to collect anything from his group for the Nixon
campaign fund and therefore decided to contribute
something himself. He is Chairman for Christopher
in Daly City and is also a strong supporter of
Nixon. (This is not the check about which I
called you earlier yesterday!)
Following are the names of two people who
are anxious to work for Mr. Nixon. They told me
following the debate at the Los Angeles Times:
Ray Sprigg
Mrs. Sophie B. Webb
2874 Nichols Canyon Road 4420 Los Feliz Blvd.
Hollywood 46
OL 6-5333
In addition, a Mr. Reese recommended strongly
that Nixon try to speak at the Los Angeles State
College. Reese is all for Nixon and says Brown
made a very bad impression when he spoke at the
College.
With kind personal regards,
CWW

We are most anxious to obtain verification of the
following proposal attributed to the CDC:
"Foreign aid to countries with Communist gov-
ernments.

Miss Baxter has mentioned that Mr. Nixon very kindly
suggested the addition of this proposal as one of a group
of left-wing stands advocated by the CDC. These proposals
in turn, as you know, are listed in the Poll now being cir-
culated throughout the State to members of the Democratic
Party. It appears that Mr. Nixon offered this suggestion at
a recent meeting held at his home.
It would be immensely helpful if you could find the
opportunity to wire us the necessary substantiation for this
proposal, at your earliest possible convenience. We a re
receiving many inquiries from the press on this one stand

If we had more nickel and dime boys
like you, our troubles would be over.
Thanks very much for your October 8th
letter with its enclosures - most gratefully received.
I'm sure the Coke Prentice types won't
phase you -- at least, I hope they won't. There are
enough years left that we can always "change our image",
and we'll both probably have to do just that -
eventually. Right now, we have an election to win.
Many thanks, John. Chin-wise, keep it up.
Money-wise, keep it rolling.

BOB HALDEMAN
August 28, 1962
From: Grassmuck
To: Don Frey, Haldeman
Last night I saw H. R. (Ray) Wyllie in Long Beach. He
knows much about Sacramento government, as his attached material
shows.
He is now ready to work for RN, and agrees with me, I be-
lieve, that his services as an investigator and gatherer of
information would be of great value. If handled properly, I
believe his work would do us considerable good, particularly in
the gather ing of anti-Brown and anti-Sacramento information.
Wyllie would like to have his expenses paid, but is
willing to give his time and services.
He wants to talk to Frey, whom I told him he should see,
and Haldeman just briefly.
I think this is a "go" situation. The possible uses of
Wyllie, which I mentioned to him as possibilities, include these:
1. General investigation as needed of Brown, his family,
and other matters.
2. Investigation of other administration activities and
members.
3. Working with Victor Lasky, whois rumored to be coming
out, and others in an anti-Brown operation.
4. Working with Jerry Reynolds in digging out materials
for use by our second line.
5. Preceding the telethon by ten days or so. Going into
each town and digging up anti-Administration matters
which can be publicized just before the telethon and
so stir up interest as well as provoke anti-Brown
questions.
Wyllie will plan to drop in on Frey within the next day
or wo. He hopes then to do a drop-by with HRH then too.

Re: Wyllie
he found his stuff in the Research files
on May 4th -- Wyllie states condition for its EXEEXXXX
use, namely - he wants to talk with RN in person or
on the telephone -- not so much about the material, but
simply to establish personal contact.
Carter Barber's note is to the effect the Wyllie feels
he has gotten the brush-off in the past -- from RHF --
and Flournoy.
- should Grassmuck give him a call ? try to steer him
away from the RN call -- and ask him to come to work?

Dear Pat:
RN had a session with Robert Wright, Republican candidate,
65th Assembly District, while we were in Sacramento
over the weekend. Wright's card and literature are
attached.
While it is highly unlikely this man will have much
success against Unruh, it is also obvious that anything
he can do to keep Unruh busy in the District will to
ours and the Party's advantage.
RN told Wright he would see what could be done to get him
the necessary financial assistance and campaign advice that
he needs in order to get his campaign under way.
We cannot, of course, divert funds or manpower for this,
but anything we can do to get others to give Wright some
help would be worthwhile. I assume this falls in your
bailiwick as Republican Party liaison.

Dear Mr. Haffner:
I wrote you yesterday regarding a flight Mr.
Weinberger made to Los Angeles on June 7 costing
$26.07.
This morning I received a bill from Daly
Travel Services, Inc. for the return to San Fran-
cisco, which reservation had been made by Mr.
Hellman for Mr. Weinberger. This bill is also
for $26.07 and I am paying it this morning.
Mr. Weinberger should therefore be reimbursed
in the sum of $52.14 to cover that flight. If you
have not already sent me a check for $26.07 in
accordance with yesterday's letter, will you please
include the second charge, making the total reim-
bursement $52.14. Thank you for your cooperation.
Very truly yours,
Marguente Plafeka

Dear George:
As promised during our recent telephone conversation I'm
enclosing a suggested "advance man" procedure set-up for
State-wide campaigning which may be useful to Jim Van Zandt,
Bill Scranton and other state-wide candidates.
The materials enclosed are essentially boiled down from the
advance man procedure used in the 1960 campaign. I know
Dick Nixon is glad to turn this material over to you and be
helpful in any way he can to contribute to the GOP's success
in Pennsylvania.
I've retained much of the original material, not in an effort to
overwhelm you with detail but merely to point out the numbrous
specific arrangements possible, realising you can diseard or
modify these procedures to local conditions. As a very mini-
mum, George, I do suggest you need a full time man to coor-
dinate the schedule and instruct a local contact man by phone
as to the specific details with particular emphasis on crowd
raising techniques. After all, if everything else goes wrong
and you have a good crowd, the day is saved.
During early July I'll probably be on a business trip to Brasil
but I'll try to make myself available after that trip here in
Washington (FE 8-6688) or at my home in Baltimore (DR 7-8795)
if I can be of further assistance.
Best regards l and Whilster good luck,
John C. Whitaker

Dear Bob: Pete discussed this matter with A. B.
Hermann and called me and I followed throught with George Bloom. The attached
advance man procedure is your manual verbatim without reference to RN and
excluding some trade secrets which in my judgment wouldn't be beneficial to release,
outside of the usual group who have passed the "loyalty oath". Cheers - JCW Iew

Dear Bob:
Enclosed herewith find an article I thought might be of

It might be an opening to slay Mr. Pat should he commute
