NIXON - TODAY SHOW
NIXON
It's rather enjoyable meeting people in the farms and factories - you
can't do that when you're running for President and travelling to 50 states.
And you get into some very out of the way places, believe it or not. I
stayed the other night in a hotel called the Boondocks. It's the name of a
hotel. It's in Walnut Grove, California. One of the best hotels, incidentally,
that I've ever been in. But I've been to the Boondocks in California. I
didn't get to the Boondocks when I was running for President.
GRONSKY: Mr. Nixon, Why do you think you'd make a better Governor than Mr. Brown?
NIXON:
Well, I think that California, as it becomes the first state in the
nation, needs to upgrade the quality of those who serve, particularly in
appointee positions in Sacramento. We need to be in the big leagues and
we need a Governor who can attract and who will attempt to bring to
Sacramento, regardless of party label, men of high qualification to run
the biggest state business in America. I think I can serve in that way
and also I have programs that will move California forward and not simply
be satisfied with rather just reacting to the great problems of a fast
growing state.
AGRONSKY: Now Governor Brown insists that you've no interest in California - that
you merely stay here - and I quote Governor Brown now - "to convert the
State Capitol into Nixon for President Headquarters." Mave you renounced
truly a presidential ambition?
NIXON:
I certainly have. I'm glad to state it again on the TODAY Show, which
has a big listening audience across this nation. Being Governor of the
first syate is a full time four year job and I'm not going to do what
Mr. Brown did when he became Governor of this state in '58. He started
to run for President four months later. And when you taketime off to

NIXON:
concentrate on running for President, you can't handle the problems of
(cont'd)
this state. I will not, under any circumstances, be a candidate for
President. I'm going to be Governor of California.
AGRONSKY: You regard that then as a flat renunciation.
NIXON:
An absolutely flat renunciation and just as great as was and flat as was
General Sherman's.
AGRONSKY: Um-hm. Now, Mr. Nixon, what effect has the Cuban crisis, which happily
has now subsided, had on this campaign and most particularly on your
own election prospects?
NIXON:
Very difficult to assess it. You know everybody takes polls. I haven't
seen any since the Cuban crisis came along. But there're some who think
it helps Mr. Brown because of his identification or attempting to identify
himself with the national administration. There are others who think it
may help me due to the fact that I have been somewhat knowledgeable in
this field and have spoken out strongly in support of President Kennedy's
policy. My guess is that we won't know the answer till November 6th, but
my guess is that it balanced off - that it didn't help either of us or
hurt either of us significantly.
AGRONSKY: You really feel that then?
NIXON:
That's the way I feel about it, but I'm no expert in this field.
AGRONSKY:
considerable national
Could you project it on a national scene?
NIXON:
The national scene - it tends to help imcumbents when they're running
for the Senate or the House of Representatives. People -

NIXON:
the deal with Communism in California supplementing what is done
nationally. This isn't a question of the loyalty of Mr. Brown or myself.
I notice, forexample, just two days ago that he said that he was a better
American than I was. Now, I don't answer by saying that I'm a better
American than he is. I think he's a good American. I hope that I am.
The question is what do we want to do to deal with Communism. I think
I know something about this field and I, therefore, have offered a pro-
gram - a program which meets constitutional requirements to supplement
what is done nationally to deal with Communism in California - not
because we fear it but because we need to deal with the conspiracy whose
agents are completely controlled by a potential enemy of the United States.
AGRONSKY: You don't feel, Mr. Nixon, that this is a straw man in California that
Communism really is not of sufficient proportions in this state to really
be of such significance that you would devote a considerable portion of
your campaigning to regard it as an issue?
NIXON:
Martin, that same argument was made when I was investigating the Hiss
case 12 years ago. You were in Washington at the time. And they said
this is a red herring. Mr. Truman said it. But here was Alger Hiss - a
man who had the best education you can get in America - who was a Supreme
Court Judge's secretary - who went to Yalta - went to the United Nations
Conference - was a Communist - and an espionage agent. It was a red
herring they said. No, it's not a straw man. Whenever there're indivi-
duals like that - whether they're on our campuses or any place else - we
don't fear them, but we need to expose them and we need to see to it that
they can't spread their poison in America.
AGRONSKY: Mr. Nixon, what would you regard as the fundamental difference in political
philosophy between yourself and Governor Brown?
NIXON:
Perhaps it gets back to the question we discussed at the outset -
federalism - that's a big word -

Sandy Quinn
Bob, in re: our conversation - I am now in a position where I
must have professional help for the above.
Ho3-6034,
have engaged the services of an Elby Cuniberti, 6066 Sunset
Boulevard. He will see to it that our Nixon film is expedited
with the cooperation of Sandy Quinn. Elby will receive film from
me, Sandy will order number of prints and destinations. Elby will
ship with news story supplied by Sandy. Charges for this, depend-
ing upon the number of prints ordered and shipped, could run from
$50.00 to $150.00 per day.
Furthermore, since shipping companies will only deal with cash,
Mr. Cuniberti should have an advance of at least $500.00 in order
to get it underway.
All money spent by Elby on our behalf will, of course, be accounted
for.
I*d like to start this as soon as possible.
Jan McCoy, along with Multi-Chrome Film Lab in San Francisco, will
expedite from that area.
