Friday, October 19, 2007 Page 24 of 24 UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA 21 July 1959 DEPARTMENT OF JOURNALISM LOS ANGELES 24, CALIFORNIA Dear Bob: Last week I finished the book and am sorry we did not get to discuss it before you left. Mazo has done a good job and in my case I feel much more symp&thetic toward RMN than before. As a matterof fact, I think the book as a campaign piece is strongest when it portrays RMN as the under- dog -- the part about the home life in Whittier came through strongly and makes it possible to identify the hero with millions of other Americans whose dad ALMOST made a million but finally wound up almost broke. It was also pleasing to see that RMN has not bought the lingo of "Democrat" and is more free of prejudice than his counterpart in our ranks (MST) to the point that he can admire the admirable qualities in that cantakerous old guy. Several impressions stuck with me that perhaps are not warranted by the facts. One is that Dewey would stay with RMN if be were convinced he could win, and drop him if he thought otherwsie. I also suppose that as a result of the Dewey phone call over the fund that RMN sees Dewey as a man of politics more than principles. Then it was unclear as to where Clay stood in the whole picture. Is he also just out to win, or is he among those who believed (and perhaps still do) that RMN is more of a Taft than an Eisenhower? The section on the heart attack seemed weak to me -- the weakest part of the whole story. Maybe this in the nature of the incident -- if Magerty took over perhaps he usurped functions of the vice presidency. At least, the Constitution doesn't mention a press secretary! I had the impressethat RMN had gone in and been a number-one backstop, but the book did not leave this impression with me - rather I figured that the situation was essentially unchanged and surely that could not be true. Now much campaign biographies are read is a question-mark. I suspect the good of this one will come from the generally favorable reviews, and that Maso will benefit as Morace Greeley did when he did a similar kind of job for Henry Clay Mazo will come out well even if his man doesn't. For my part I found it a valuable study that confirmed many of my impressions and set others aright. My only criticism would be the coverage and attitude of the South American tour. If all that mess was inspired by Communists alone it would seem that they could have ousted the government in power, yet they haven't. I would suspect it was more Anti-Gringo than anything, and the sympathy with his dilemma would have been more universal if RMN had been portrayed as standing up as an American to anti-Americans, above and beyond any political ideology. But I may be all wet. Anyway, I enjoyed it and thank you for letting me borrow it. Cordially, Bob Bob Rutland
