We've been wising up on Rockefeller, talking with his intimates,
studying him at close range, getting a feel of his plans for the future,
seeing what he thinks, and what others think of him. Our impressions:
Will he be a candidate for Presidential nomination? Flat YES.
Is he likely to be nominated? As of now we'd say NO, because
the great majority of grass-roots politicians are in favor of Nixon.
Could he be elected, if nominated? He'd have excellent chance,
for many Democrats would jump their ticket and vote for Rockefeller.
Might he accept VP? He says pretty flatly that he would NOT,
and anyway, Nixon is not much interested in having him on the ticket.
Wouldn't "Nixon & Rockefeller" be a strong ticket? Yes, but
if Nixon doesn't want him, he can choose somebody else, and that's that.
Will Rocky tackle Nixon in primaries? Yes, next March, in N.H.
Is Rockefeller's traveling doing any good? Yes, he goes over
when people see him. But he hurt himself a bit in California visit
many people thought it was "bad taste" to go into Nixon's home state.
Does he plan further barnstorming trips? Yes, many of them,
and it's a fixed policy, based on the idea that he really sells himself
by his warm and personal manner when he mingles with crowds.
Does he think there may be a popular demand to "draft Rocky"?
YES, of course
that's what his trips are all about.
Will it work out that way? Matter of opinion. Our opinion, NO,
it would take more than that to shift the politicians from Nixon.
Does Rockefeller think Nixon can not win the election itself?
Don't know for sure. But some close friends believe that this is true,
and are telling him so, which is one reason why we think he will run.
Will Dewey mastermind the nomination of Rockefeller? NO
the two are not any too close, and anyhow, Dewey is a "mixed blessing."
Is Rockefeller a "Roosevelt New Dealer" in disguise? NO
for although he's a social liberal, his thinking is not in the pattern
of Roosevelt-New Deal. This is our conclusion, based on lots of points
which we shall not discuss at this stage of the race later on maybe.
Would Rockefeller reorganize Republican party? He would try,
and he has some definite ideas. He thinks it lacks imagination, etc.
Thinks the old fogeys rule too much. Not close enough to the people.
Knows the value of patronage, "pap," would play it for all it's worth.
Much similarity to Nixon's ideas, but Nixon knows more ins & outs,
the practicalities of playing the game within the party. Experience.
Rocky's wealth a help or a hindrance? Right now, it's a help,
for he is able to run for President and pay his own campaign expenses,
which, with polls & things, and travel & salaries, are running heavy.
But, in our opinion, many people might turn sour on the issue of wealth.
Perhaps such attitude is unjustified, but it's one of the facts of life.
As for Rockefeller's merits as a Governor or as a President,
we have favorable impressions, and shall report on them later.
Yours very truly,
THE KIRLINGER EDITORS

datelined Caracas
Governor Nelson A. Rechefeller relaxed on his Monte Sacre Ranch
West of here today after getting his vacation under way with a round of
courtesy calls on officials.
Rockefeller and his wife breakfasted yesterday with President Remule
Betancourt and spent the rest of the day calling on other officials, including
Governor J. Castillo Batalla of the Caracas Federal District.
He told newsmen late yesterday that he considers Vice President Nixon
"one of the men best prepared for the Presidency." He would not comment
on his own presidential prospects.
"Amy decision regarding whether or not I would accept the Republican
Party's nomination could not be made until such time as the nomination is
offered,' he said.
"If and when the Party decides to nominate me, them and there I'll
decide on my action."
