R. HALDEMAN\nFROM:\nPATRICK J. BUCHANAN\nSUBJECT:\nPolitical Memorandum, 1972\nCongressman McCloskey is now traveling at times in the company\nof Jerry Cooke and Charles U. Daly. Have uncovered nothing\nabout the former, but the latter is an old New Frontiersman,\na John F. Kennedy man, a Bobby Kennedy man -- and a protege\nand close friend of Larry O'Brien. This raises up interesting\npossibilities. Is the Democratic Party providing staff assistance\nand/or financial assistance to the McCloskey Campaign. If so,\nwe can discredit McCloskey as not a man of principle, but as\na party traitor, who is trafficking with New Frontiersmen to\ndefeat a Republican President. Good stuff can be made\nout of this damaging to McCloskey's budding effort.\nIf we could find out where the money is coming from, to McCloskey,\nwe might build a case that he is simply a pawn. Anyhow, we should\nhave some of our political people looking out for this sort of thing.\nApril 28, 1971\nMEMORANDUM FOR:\nKEN KHACHIGIAN\nFROM:\nPat Buchanan\nThis is a good indictment of the fellow, which\nmight have appeal across a broad spectrum -- all across\nfrom peace kids to conservatives. But it looks like the\nkind of personal assault that most politicians are unwilling\nto give. What conservative can we get to deliver this -- then\nhave Monday excerpt it; and perhaps Human Events run\nit in full. Then get reprints of it out to campus newspapers\nand the like. Maybe a Congressman whom we know to be\nconservative -- but whom others will read as simply Congressman X."
