MEMORANDUM TO: H.R. HALDEMAN
FROM:
PAT BUCHANAN
Concerning your disparagement of Monday on Monday, a dissent.
Of all the political publications I can recall, Monday is the lone
one that gets regular wire service copy. Week after week, it has
created a major national political story--helpful to the President,
damaging to the Democrats.
The Muskie "Temper", the "Indecisiveness" of Muskie were either
started by Monday, or promoted. Likewise, the Collapse of the
Muskie Fortunes--McGovern's "Front" for Kennedy, and this
week (see attached) the "O'Brien" collusion with Muskie. These
are first-rate political stories in some of which I had a hand myself.
They are being picked up and repeated by the national press. They
are doing the opposition more harm than any GOP publication in my
time. That's my view.
These stories have all made the wires which means millions of
readers, while the PR section in the center on the China trip,
was seen by only a few thousand Republicans--who more than
likely are already with the President. My own view was that
the PR thing on the China trip was impressive--especially
considering GOP wariness over the trip --but who did it reach
besides the party faithful who are by and large for Richard Nixon--
China Trip or not?
