MEMORANDUM FOR: CHUCK COLSON
FROM:
PAT BUCHANAN
Sent that piece out to Tony Smith, who thought
it good, but counterproductive to run now -- as
it would tend to harden the conservatives in
their position, and perhaps nudge Ashbrook
further toward candidacy for both publicity
reasons and reasons of machismo. Generally,
I concur; so that piece will not be run.

I think you will find the attached fascinating (unless you are the one
who sent it to me; I haven't found out where I got it).
Muskie is really mushing on this issue. Can we do anything with the
Catholic press to stir it up a bit? He also seems to muddle his way
through the abortion and birth control issue. Note, however, that he
comes out on the right side as far as amnesty for the draft dodgers
Certainly this should be stashed away for use at the right time when
we, in fact, do something in the parochial school aid area.
