MEMORANDUM FOR MR. H. R. HALDEMAN
FROM: DWIGHT L. CHAPIN
As a gag - in light of the events in this morning's leadership
meeting - the President had me send an agent up to the Hill to
act as Body Guard to Congressman John Rhodes.
The agent approached Congressman Rhodes and presented his
commission book. He said that under orders from the President
he was there to serve as his body guard. This was due to the
advice which Rhodes had given the President this morning
regarding a special session.
Rhodes, who had been standing, sat down - and looking very
serious, he said, "This isn't like the President; he is a very
serious man." The Congressman believed the whole thing.
The Congressman called Timmons and Bill said it must be a joke.
But the Congressman still is doubtful.
RECOMMENDATION
That the President call Congressman Rhodes - to let him know
there have been no threats.
