Chapin RE: Gallup Poll Gallup does not have its final figure yet for the last popularity poll which they took. John Davies does advise, however, that it looks like the approval rate will be 61%. I asked him if he thought it would go down to 59% and he said, "No, I won't let that happen. " He says that it is fluctuating between 60 and 62% approval and that he thinks it will end up at 61%. He is going to give me the final figures tomorrow. The poll will either be released a week from tomorrow, a week from this coming Sunday, or a week from this coming Monday. They have just not worked out their release schedule yet. July 11, 1970 Saturday - 10:45 a.m. MEMORANDUM FOR: H.R. HALDEMAN FROM: DWIGHT L. CHAPIN RE: Private Dinner - The Annenbergs I called and talked to Ambassador Annenberg. In informed him that the President would like to host a party in his honor the evening of the Prince Charles and Princess Anne party. I asked the Ambassador for any suggestions of people he would like to have to the dinner. Imade it clear that the President would like to have friends of Walter's who also would be especially beneficial to the President to have Included. In addition, I also mentioned the possibility that perhaps Walter would lknow of wome publishers or top television executives who would be appropriate for the guest list for that evening. The Ambassador refuses to pick any of the guests or suggest any of the guests-for that particular dinner. He does not feel that it is right for him to do so, nor does he want to. He says that it is a high enough honor for them to be invited by the Nixons and whomever the Nixons want to have there would be fine. I pushed and shoved and everything else but could get no names from the Ambassador. Lucy Winchester is working with Mrs. Nixon on a guest list for that evening's dinner. She should have a list in to us by Monday as to who It is that they feel they are going to invited Lucy implied that Mrs. Nixon will probably be talking to the President about this. DLC:hle July 15, 1970 MEMORANDUM FOR MR. H. R. HALDEMAN FROM: Dwight L. Chapin RE: Annenberg Dinner The following have accepted for the Annenberg Dinner: President and First Lady Amb. and Mrs. Annenberg Mrs. Longworth Lord Thompson Mr. and Mrs. Don McGannon Amb. and Mrs. Freeman Confirmation has not been received from Henry Kissinger and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Knight. Should Mr. and Mrs. Knight regret, the next option would be Mr. and Mrs. William Michaels, President of Storer Broadcasting. The next two options, as you know, are Hobe Lewis and Secretary and Mrs. Rogers. As you have been told, Lord Thompson is not married. He has, however, accepted. The question is should he have as his dinner partner Mrs. Longworth and should we drop Henry Kissinger from the guest list ? (This would enable us, hopefully, to add the Michaels.) Approve Disapprove Should we invite Nancy Hanks to be Lord Thompson's dinner partner and leave Henry Kissinger as Mrs. Longworth's dinner partner? Approve Disapprove July 15, 1970 MEMORANDUM FOR MR. H. R. HALDEMAN FROM: Dwight L. Chapin RE: Gallup Poll The Gallup Poll has survey which will be published this weekend which has the President pitted against Lindsay and Wallace - Lindsay being the Democrat. It was taken among all registered voters and breaks down as follows: President 46% Lindsay 29% Wallace 14% The Lindsay 29% figure only puts him 7 points behind Muskie who the current favorite of the rank and file Democrats. This fact will be pointed out in the text of the story. For your information, Gallup will not be adding the 18-year-old vote factor into a survey until probably after the election. The main reason on this is the financial problems in doing so since it would involve changing the sampling throughout the whole Gallup organiza- tion, which includes the commercial parts. It seems to me that we have the making of an issue here. I am not sure it is one which works in our favor, but in terms of a general attack against the polling industry or one of several attacks, this one could be slipped in as a factor. The other consideration may be that it is in our best interest that the 18-year-old factor will not be con- sidered in the Gallup Polls. DLC:ny July 15, 1970 MEMORANDUM FOR MR. H. R. HALDEMAN FROM: Dwight L. Chapin RE: Prince Charles/Princess Anne - White House Entertainment Per a discussion that you and I had with Dr. Kissinger on the plane going to California, I have been talking with the State Department (Bus Mosbacher) about the State Department's picking up the expenses on the White House event for Prince Charles and Princess Anne. It is anticipated that the party this Friday night will cost $35, 000. Bus Mosbacher has advanced our case to Bill Macomber and Charlie Meyer. It was done on the basis that this is an official visit since Prince Charles will bt some future time be King of England. The reaction back from State is that it would be a mistake for them to pay for it since world is likely to leak out and since it is wrong for the State Department to pay for it because it is a private party that Julie and Tricia are giving. In talks with Connie Stuart, Rex Scouten, and according to what Connie tells me Mrs. Nixon thinks, it is felt that State should not pay for this event. Rather, it should be paid out of private funds. Over and over again, Connie has implied to the press that the visit is a private visit and that it is being hosted by Julie and Tricia. It is felt that one of the first questions which is going to come up is who paid for the event. It is not felt that the Government can pay for this event. According to Connie, one thought has been to ask Walter Annenberg to pay for the party. My understanding had been, and so had Connie's, that Mrs. Nixon was going to ask Walter Annenberg to pay for it. This morning Connie informed me that Mrs. Nixon would not ask Walter Annenberg to do this but that someone else should. 2. DECISIONS There are two questions: 1. Should Walter Annenberg be asked to pay for this event? Yes No 2. Who should ask Ambassador Annenberg toppay for the event ? Haldeman Chapin Secretary Rogers Other DLC:ny
