Friday, March 05, 2010 Page 1 of 1 May 16, 1971 MEMORANDUM FOR: MR. JON HUNTSMAN FROM DWIGHT L. CHAPIN SUBJECT: 1970 Campaign - Outstanding Bills I would like to take exception to your memorandum of May 15 directed to Ron Walker. Ron has constantly made the point over the last several months that someone has to put the pressure on the local Republican organizations to take care of the various bills which they incurred during the campaign. These bills are the obligations of the local Party organizations. They are not being paid and the person taking the rap in many of the negative stories is the President. Ron is only drawing these to your attention as he has with Dent and others so that someone gets the lead out and gets them paid. You do not need to make your position "perfectly clear" to us. Our people (the advance men) are well-oriented and strive to see that the bills are picked up on all occasions whenever possible by the local people. The point is that the local people committed to equipment, printing costs, etc. and were billed by those business men in their States. The local people have not paid their bills, are refusing to pay their bills because they have no funds and we are taking the rap. The real problem is going to be when we make our next trip to some of those same cities. Your statement that'most of these bills that are now hanging over our heads are those that we rushed into without proper authorization or planning" shows a complete lack of sensitivity or understanding of the problem. May 14, 1971 MEMORANDUM FOR: MR. RON WALKER FROM: DWIGHT L. CHAPIN Keep in mind that the President has invited Connally to go to Florida next weekend. He will fly to Florida with the President after the LBJ Dedication. I don't think Mrs. Connally is invited. We will have to look into this but this is just to warn you. cc: Mr. Bull
