MEMORANDUM FOR:
CHUCK COLSON
FROM:
DWIGHT L. CHAPIN
Why don't we get a very prominent person whose name would
be instantly recognized to write a letter to the editors of
Time magazine -- the purpose being to get a reprint in the
letter section -- saying that beyond any question of doubt
Richard Nixon must be Time's Man of the Year for 1971.
His leadership, boldness, courage, etc. regarding the
China initiative, as well as his economic program, should
cinch this fact. The letter obviously should be very well
written and stress those qualities of the President which
these two major decisions exemplify. I think the uniqueness
of having the letter done now out of the blue could spark
many other letters to Time, some which may be negative
but my guess is that Time will end up making him the
Man of the Year anyway.

MEMORANDUM FOR:
MR. RICHARD MOORE
FROM:
DWIGHT L. CHAPIN
In Sunday's New York Times, there was an article on the Bicentennial. It make a point that
Leonard Bernstein had been picked to write a symphony for America's Bicentennial.
There are good reasons why we should get this decision reversed. John Dean can provide
you with the background on Bernstein. Once you have looked it over, why don't we figure
out a strategy and get in touch with Mahoney and try to get this turned around.
cc: Mr. Dean
