Monday, September 13, 2010 Page 1 of 1 November 5, 1970 MEMORANDUM FOR H. R. HALDEMAN FROM: MESSRS. COLSON AND MAGRUDER This is a follow-up report to your conference call to us yesterday. 1. We were unable to reach Rog Morton until 5 p.m. last night. He was in Minneapolis on personal business. We could not, therefore, get him on TV. We can this evening if the networks will take him. 2. We did reach John Tower and Gerry Ford who will hold press conferences today and tomorrow, taking the positive line on our victories and hitting the networks for their coverage. 3. We discovered that no one had monitored the election night coverage. Mort Allin was told apparently not to do it. We are now having Signal rerun the tapes and will have a point-by-point analysis today. 4. Al Snyder called each of the network news vice presidents to ask to purchase a transcript of their election night coverage. The word spread very fast and they appeared to be very shaken by the request. Colson felt this was the best way to express our concern in view of the lack of specific data available to us. 5. Incidentally, the Reasoner switch (see article attached as Tab A) is bound to give the networks pause over their commentaries. The whole question of election night coverage, perhaps, should be gone into by a Congressional committee (see Tab B from today's New York Times). 6. The network coverage last night was reasonably balanced. The President's statement received good play. The net conclusion of last evening's programs was that both parties felt victorious and that the elections were, in fact, a stand off -- not bad, not good. October 13, 1970 MEMORANDUM FOR H. R. HALDEMAN "Duster" miller, who heads the Southern Region for the Teamsters, is actively backing George Bush with money and political support. Charles W. Colson ec: Harry Dent George Bell - Be certain this guy is in our Labor book and rewarded appropriately.
