Monday, October 04, 2010 Page 2 of 2 July 3, 1972 MEMORANDUM FOR: PAT BUCHANAN FROM: CHARLES COLSON As part of your research effort on McGovern, you should read the Shannon piece in yesterday's New York Times Magazine. It is utterly devastating if used with the right people. I am sure you have already seen it and probably came to the same conclusion I did. Shannon is a member of the liberal establishment and regards McGovern as a phony. Howard K. Smith was so impressed with it he called me to be sure that I read it. He said he thought it would turn an awful lot of people off. The responsible moderate liberals might turn very sour on the guy if the one thing he has going for him, supposed credibility, is tarnished and the Shannon piece really does tarnish it. Feb Cleak THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON Man December 6, 1971 DETERMINED TO BE AN CONFIDENTIAL ADMINISTRATIVE MARKING E.O. 12065, Section 6-102 By sew lickles MEMORANDUM FOR: H. R. CHARLES COLSON Fob FROM: PAT BUCHANAN Vic Lasky was in Saturday, giving me the background on a story with which you are familiar. Putnam has crawled out from under him, because the book is too pro-Nixon; Vic is in difficult economic shape because of loans, etc. -- and he has proposed the following which seems to me to merit attention: Since the book is almost done (Vic says a week's work could finish it) and resistance is being met on all fronts, because of its pro-Nixon character Vic recommends that Jack Drown go to New York, with the financial clout, to guarantee someone like Bantam books, that they will not lose on their printing -- and then a million copies should be distributed of the paperback nationally before the election. He argues that it should be sent especially to all opinion makers and reviewers, especially the favorable ones; and that we push it -- as the President comes off very well in the book; there is a lot of new interesting material; and it can only do us good. He feels that Drown, alone, given the backing, can pull this off with Bantam. Vic himself is willing to forego the hard cover and the royalties, et al. -- his concern is enough dough to pay back loans, and not to have suffered a loss on the project. He thinks we can move on this -- this week. Buchanan THE WHITE HOUS ADMINISTRATIVELY WASHINGTON CONFIDENTIAL December 10, 1971 MEMORANDUM FOR: CHUCK COLSON FROM: BRUCE KEHRLI BAK SUBJECT: Lasky's Book Bob reviewed the attached memo from Pat Buchanan and indicated that you should handle this project entirely with the objective of getting Lasky's book published as soon as possible. THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON January 17, 1972 MEMORANDUM TO: CHUCK COLSON FROM: PAT BUCHANAN Talked with Vic Lasky; I believe he is busy getting his book published on his own, and may be successful; he says it is almost done. The arrangement he is working out is not the one with Neal Freeman. This of course is confidential. If your man is to call him on the "review" then he ought not to use this new information -- but on the basis of the old agreement. Buchanan MEMORANDUM THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON January 17, 1972 MEMORANDUM FOR: PAT BUCHANAN FROM: CHUCK COLSON I just talked with Neal Freeman. If we are going to have any success getting Lasky's book published we've got to have a: manuscript. Could you check with Vic and see where he stands and when we will have something that can be submitted to the publisher ? You might also want to remind Vic at the same time that we have an agreement with him that Haldeman will review the manuscript. This obviously is going to require some time, ergo the message is: let's got it moving or forget it!
