Monday, October 04, 2010 Page 1 of 1 15 October 1971 MEMORANDUM FOR CHARLES W. COLSON FROM DOUG HALLETT In order to keep my law school applications under active consideration (allowing me to avoid having to reapply completely and repay application fees and giving me the option to enter law school next fall assuming I can get back in), I need to keep them posted on my activities. I also need a "To WHom It May Concern" recommendation from my current employer; i.e. The White House. I'd like to have it signed by Mr. Haldemen, but you'll probably get stuck with writing it (I'll write it for you, if you like.). To refresh your memory, my work assignments have included: article-drafting, speechwriting, organizational liaison with youth groups, coordination of administration relations youth media, representation of administration before youth groups, preparation of in-depth reports on various interest- groups and their needs, P.R. ideas, ideas on the administration's rhetorical and philosophical posture, reading for you, and occasional special projects. Hopefully, the rechmendation could note that the President liked my piece on campus unrest for the WallStreet Jounral in the summer of 1970 and that I spent a good part of my senior year sending memos to the White House at the White House's request on various aspects of the administration's public presentations. My attributes the that I am bright, innovative, energetic, thoughtful, and articulate, both verbally and in writing. My liabilities are that I am young, impatient, arrogant, impolitic, overly certain, and uncautious. If it is at all possible, I'd like to have this letter by November 1. Thanks very much for any consideration you can give to this. This zig-zag business reassures nobody - it just undermines the President's ability to the Sund present himself as a leader of direction and purpose.
