McGovern is\nvery vulnerable on this, as is the Guild. Talk to Safire and\nMoore and get their ideas. Obviously we can get Jeffrey\nHart to write a few speeches for us; he would be very good\non this one. We mustn't let people forget that the most\nimportant union in the United States has endorsed McGovern;\nobviously it is the most influential union because it controls\nwhat is printed and said. As a matter of fact, on this score\ngive me a typical D & A which can be sent to our major\nspokesmen. When anyone is asked \"what about union support\nfor the President the answer can be the President has\nearned the support of the rank and file and the polls shows\nthat they will support him but the most critical and most\nimportant union, the Newspaper Guild, has afterall endorsed\nMcGovern. This is essential and anything we can do with\nClawson to drum up more editorial comments would be very\nhelpful. Also, as a thought, letters to the editor to those\npapers that have not condemned the Guild for this act would\nbe very useful letters which challenge the editors to\nrepudiate the Guild endorsement or in they don't, charge\nthat they can't because the Guild member editorial writers\nwould refuse to write editorials. This could be very useful.\nJuly 24, 1972\nMEDORANDUM FOR:\nDICK HOWARD\nFROM:\nCHARLES COLSON\nWhy? Please tell me why -- (by the way, at this point I am\nfrothing at the mouth), the full Fitzsimmons statement was\nnot printed in Monday? If you will recall, I discussed this\nwith you and you told me Lofton was going to use the state-\nment intact and the picture on the dover. The picture on\nthe cover is delightful, except that it happens to be one that\nwas taken when the President had the Canadian flag on his\nlapel as well as the American flag, which will incense the\nTeamster executives, since it was put on the President\nMonday by their Vice President from Canada who is a jackass.\nAnd, there is no Fitzsimmons statement anywhere in the copy.\nThe Fitzsimmons statement is a perfect thing for our Party\npeople to use I am absolutely running out of patience on\nthis. We keep being told things are going to be in Monday and\nthen they are not. What inGod's name does it take to get this\nstraighted out? Would you please ask for an explanation and I\nthink from now on we had simply better see the page mock-ups\nof Monday before it goes to print.\nOctober 2, 1972\nMEMORANDUM FOR:\nDICK HOWARD\nFROM:\nCHARLES COLSON\nBe sure to follow up on the Buchwall-style column on the\nNew York Times endorsement. I just talked to Buchanana\nand he's going to check to see if Jeff Hart is going to write\nit. If not, he will write it and you will give it to Lasky\nto print it, but check Buchanan today because we've got\nto move out on this if Hart doesn't come through for us.\nJune 20, 1972\nMEMORANDUM FOR:\nDICK HOWARD\nFROM:\nCHARLES COLSON\nI want a report on what we have done in connection with\nBilly Graham's Explo. I am appalled that we only had an\n\"observor\" present. Based on what Billy Graham told the\nPresident, these were our people. They want to go out\nand campaign for us and we should exploit this as fully as\npossible. This can be an enormous campaign resource.\nI think last week or the week before 1 made a notation in\nthe News Summary to Howard Cohen telling him to be sure\nthat our people were involved with this. I can't believe with\nRietz' operation going the way it is, that we didn't get very\ndeeply involved with this. It probably is not too late to do\nso; we should have had our operatives there circulating\nthrough the crowd.\nI want to be absolutely certain that this is followed through on.\nAssign it to Cohen and be sure that I get follow through reports."
