Monday, October 18, 2010 Page 1 of 1 March 2, 1972 MEMORANDUM FOR: FRED MALEK FROM: CHARLES COLSON This is simply to confirm our phone conversation last evening regarding Lyn Nofziger's successor at the Republican National Committee. I think Buttram, if Dunlap is not interested, is the best choice that we have and I would suggest that we proceed forthwith. One problem that arose in my discussion with Buttram, as I told you, is that he indicated that the signal he was given by Cliff Miller and Shumway at the Citizens Committee was that he was to take all directions from them -- all policy guidance, etc. He specifically asked them apparently how he would get signals from the White House. He was told that White House signals would be fed through 1701. This is of course absurd. We need to keep direct lines into the National Committee and we don't need to layer one bureaucracy on top of another. Obviously 1701 and our- selves have to keep in close coordination and if Dunlap gets conflicting signals then it is up to the Campaign Com- mittee and us to resolve. I would appreciate your insuring that this is clear in Buttram's mind as well as the Committee's. By the way, Dunlap claims he has never been interviewed and is, in fact, interested. I don't think we should settle this finally until someone has at least had a look at him.
