Wednesday, August 25, 2010 Page 1 of 1 September 25, 1972 MEMORANDUM FOR: H.R. HALDEMAN FROM: CHARLES COLSON SUBJECT: Wallace People I have been very impressed with Charlie Snyder, Wallace's top man, who sent me the attached letter which Ithought you might like to read. While it is rambling, he makes two very interesting points. The first is the overture now being made to Wallace by McGovern. This is for real. I don't think there is a chance of their succeeding but the McGovern people are presenting some very persuasive arguments. The second point deals with the campaign theme, and while he hasn't stated it very well, I think the trust issue is a very powerful one. Right now we own it. Snyder suggests that we exploit it, a point with which I concur on the positive side. September 1, 1972 MEMORANDUM FOR: H. R. HALDEMAN FROM: CHARLES COLSON SUBJECT: Mrs. Ann Maier Mrs. Maier, who seconded the President and wife of the Mayor of Milwaukee, is in one of her frequent neurotic moods and was complaining today that she had not heard from the President either by letter or by phone call since her seconding speech. The President has a phone call recommendation that I sub- mitted some time ago. I think this is well worth the President's time and it would be very helpful if he could do it over this weekend. She also was lamenting during the phone conversation that no one had asked her husband, Mayor Maier, to endorse the President. She said that he was on the verge of doing it during the Republican Convention. Even though Maier said good things about Shriver yesterday, Mrs. Maier thinks that her husband can be had. I'll pursue this with Ehrlichman independently, but if there is any truth to it, it's all the more reason for this call. CC: John Ehrlichman September 19, 1972 MEMORANDUM FOR: DICK HOWARD FROM: CHARLES COLSON We need to get some more activity stirred up on the question of the Newspaper Build endorsing McGovern. McGovern is very vulnerable on this, as is the Guild. Talk to Safire and Moore and get their ideas. Obviously we can get Jeffrey Hart to write a few speeches for us; he would be very good on this one. We mustn't let people forget that the most important union in the United States has endorsed McGovern; obviously it is the most influential union because it controls what is printed and said. As a matter of fact, on this score give me a typical a & A which can be sent to our major spokesmen. When anyone is asked "what about union support for the President the answer can be the President has earned the support of the rank and file and the polls shows that they will support him but the most critical and most important union, the Newspaper Guild, has afterall endorsed McGovern. This is essential and anything we can do with Clawson to drum up more editorial comments would be very helpful. Also, as a thought, letters to the editor to those papers that have not condemned the Guild for this act would be very useful letters which challenge the editors to repudiate the Guild endorsement or is they don't, charge that they can't because the Guild member editorial writers would refuse to write editorials. This could be very useful.
