Wednesday, August 25, 2010 Page 1 of 1 December 6, 1972 Dear Bryce: I happened to notice the attached in the Boston newspaper last week. All I can say is: Tch, Tch. Weren't you satisfied just to have her gently retired into private life without going this far? Actually what undoubtedly happened is that someone was looking for the key to the chastity belt which Bill Lewis had hidden somewhere in her living room. Just for your idle amusement, I thought you might like to see my exchange of correspondence with the good lady. I had decided that despite all past differences, it would be a kind gesture on the eve of her retirement to write her a gracious letter. Note the response. She's probably refer- ring to you in terms of people she hasn't heard from! Best personal regards. Sincerely, Charles W. Colson Special Counsel to the President Mr. Bryce Harlow Proctor and Gamble 1801 K Street, N.W. Washington, D.C. /hh December 6, 1972 Dear Kevin: Every now and then when I have the opportunity to read your newsletter in full I find it very interesting, sometimes informa- tive, usually quite perceptive and always well written. However, once in a while I find some outrageous inaccuracy. For example, your point in the latest newsletter that "Lyn Nofziger has been cut up by Colson" in his desire to become National Chairman. I point this out to you not in any critical sense because first of all you are a friend and an ally and I know that what you write is not intended ever to be harmful to me. The reason that I bring this to your attention is that it might alert you that your source is bad. I never in any way, shape or form said anything against Lyn Nofziger. I wouldn't; I have a very high regard for Nofziger. He talked to me one night on the phone about his desire to be RNC Chairman and I told him very candidly that a man had been picked. In fact, that was the case at the time Nofziger talked to me so I not only didn't cut him up, I tried to give him useful advice that he not spend a lot of credit going after a job that was already settled. The President had made his pick very early on for that particular spot. Once again, I make this point not in any sense critical. I think Nofziger has known me long enough to know that whether we agree or not I will always play straight with him. My point in writing is simply to warn you that you have a bum source. As I read most of the stuff you write, you have damn good sources so I just warn you that in this one area someone is not giving it to you straight. Thanks for the plug for my new firm. Needless to say, that will do me no harm. I will keep you posted on my own plans and would like, as a 2. matter of fact, to have a little discussion with you about two or three ideas that I have which might involve our conspiring together from time to time. Best personal regards. Sincerely, Charles W. Colson Special Counsel to the President Mr. Kevin Phillips American Political Research Corp. 4720 Montgomery Avenue Bethesda, Maryland 20014 /hh
