March 19, 1969
Honorable John Dean
Assistant Deputy Attorney General
for Legislation
United States Department of Justice
Washington, D. C.
Dear John:
My sincerest congratulations to you on the great
appointment. I can't think of anyone who is better train-
ed to do the job in your new assignment. I know that you
must be very pleased to be there.
To bring you up to date here, I am now County
Attorney for St. Joseph County, Indiana, and in addition
to my private practice, have joined the Notre Dame Law
School as a member of their faculty. I am teaching, of
all things, Real Property, which since we suffered through
it together, you will remember was not our very favorite
course. However, since I have been teaching the course,
I have grown to enjoy it tremendously and find the subject
matter and teaching in general to be very enjoyable.
Concerning the political scene, I am remaining ex-
tremely active in regard to the political scene and it is
not at all unlikely that I might be a candidate again in
1970. This by no means should indicate that the decision
has been made, what it does indicate is that I believe that
the congressional nomination here is worth something and I
believe that the congressional seat is winable for the Rep-
ublican party. By all means, if you have any close contacts
with the Congressional Committee, put in a plug for me, and
perhaps, with their assistance, and your assistance I can
make it back to Washington in 1970. But, who know>what the
future will hold. I don't know when I will be in Washington
again, but I certainly hope that we might be able to have
lunch, and I could bring you up to date on all that is going
on. Please drop around and say hello to Bill Ruckelshaus,
who as you probably know, is a good friend and was the finest
candidate for political office anywhere last year. Two more
weeks for the campaign, and he would be the Indiana Senator.
All the best for continued success to you and your wife,
Dane

Dear John:
Belated congratulations on your appointment to high
public office. I trust that you will remember that public
office is a public trust. I knew that you were "in" when
a fairly senior FBI agent called me several days ago and
asked for a reference. I told him the only bad thing I
knew was that you were a Republican. This was probably my
first criminal offense since Inauguration Day but I will
count on you to shelter me from justice!
With every good wish to you and all the Deans, I am,
Sincerely,
JO

Dear John:
My congratulations and very best wishes on your
new position. I was extremely gratified to see the
President and the Attorney General make such an
appointment. I know from my close personal experience
and working with you that there probably isn't anyone
today who is SO well versed in the field of legislation,
statutory drafting, and the legislative process as
yourself. I also know that not only your competence
but also your practical experience in such matters will
be invaluable to the administration and to the Department
of Justice in particular.
My only regret is that I am afraid your new position
will be so demanding that our extra curricular activities
will be curtailed greatly. I hope this isn't true. If
ever there is anything I can do, please let me know.
Martha sends her congratulations as well.
Best to Karla and little John.
Yours very truly,
Tom
