BARRETT GENERAL COUNSEL Mr. John Dean III The White House Washington, D. C. Dear John: I read in the Wall Street Journal this morning that you have moved to a new position at the White House. I hope this letter reaches you there. Best congratulations and it looks like an interesting opportunity combined with your experience on the Hill and in Justice. All you need now is a judgeship and you will have all branches. As you may know, I came to Tulsa last January after deciding not to run this year. It is a long story and when I see you in person I will fill you in. My interest in politics has not diminished and I am working for Dick Roudebush in Indiana as well as Don Newman in Indiana's Third. Don has an excellent chance to beat Brademas. I saw Tom Hogan at our annual Judge Jones reunion. He is enjoying his law practice very much. I wonder if you get a chance to fish and hunt with Irving and Austin. If you should be heading this way, plan on staying with US. All the best, From David M. Barrett DMB:ilm THE WILLIAM K. The Cleveland Trust Company CLEVELAND, OHIO 44101 August 5, 1970 Mr. John W. Dean III The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Washington, D. C. 30010 Dear Dino: I was very pleased to read in this morning's edition of the Wall Street Journal the fact that you have been appointed to the President's White House staff. Reading of your appointment called to mind the many conversations we had at college when we discussed what young men might do to improve government. I had known of your service in the Justice Department, but I had not known of your recent appointment. I hope that your efforts in your new position will help us solve some of the problems that currently face us. With best wishes, Sincerely yours, Hugh Hugh L. I was delighted to hear the news and can vouch for the aptness of the choice; I'm sure you'll acquit yourself admirably. Best of luck in what will undoubtedly be a very chal- lenging and rewarding position. Cordially, john John Fiorini P.S. I'm clerking here for the summer; one more year of school to go. Law school is interesting, but I don't think I'll be too sad when it's over! JF 6c 1900 PACKARD BUILDING PHILADELPHIA, PA. 19102 PHILADELPHING PM 23 JUL 1070 Hon. John W. Dean, III Counsel To The President The White House Washington, D.C. 20500 Dear John: I was delighted to read several days ago of your appoint- ment as Counsel to the President. This is indeed good news in two ways. First, it represents to you such a fine opportunity and challenge and second, the President shall be able to rely on a person of such high talents and in- tegrity as you possess. JENSEN (202) 223-6150 July 21, 1970 Honorable John W. Dean, III Counsel to the President The White House Washington, D. C. Dear John: Although I promptly phoned my "congrats" to your secretary on the day your appointment was announced, I have been delayed in writing to congratulate you for two reasons. Number one, I have been busy with my practice which, fortun- ately, is growing, and secondly I have been in consultation with my engravers to see if I can amend my professional cards to carry the designation --- "Counsel to the Counsel to the President." We now have our Tax Court actions consolidated and assigned to Washington, D. C. for trial. I anticipate that the trial will occur in the early fall. My hope is to have all the evidence stipulated since the matter turns, it appears to me, on a legal issue. A couple of district courts have recently held for the taxpayers and as near as I can tell, the Tax Court is still adhering to its earlier decision in Bray. I want you to come by and see our new offices which I hope we will have completed by the end of this month. It takes a long time to hang pictures, etc. Also, I have been intending to call and see if you would like for Johnny to play with Walter some Sunday in our back yard. We have a big one with two swings and a ladder, so let us know if you want to come out with Johnny. Best wishes. Sincerel JDW/mcb J.D.
